Impact of Fake News in our Society Today


Fake news is what we all know and have different interpretation for, but as according to what I know, I see it as misinformation to the general public or an individual for a personal interest, which may cause a serious implications to the society and the world at large, it is important that we should know how those the participates in sharing fake news and being intentional about it, not putting into consideration then negative effects it may cause everyone at the receiving end.

I was informed on the social media this morning that the popular action movie actor Chackie Chan is dead, then the next I could do was to engaged other social media platforms to confirm this, just to later discover it was all fake news, this then brought me to writing to create this thread on how the impact is fake news has been affecting our society today, but before going further, hear the wiki definition of fake news.

Fake news has been on the increase especially on the social media space although when talking about fake news there are different ways it could be generated, sometimes it could be intensional and some unintentional.
Most of the times fake news on the social media space are with the intention of causing a traffic so this are done intentionally there calling the attention of people just so they can get a relevant post

Meanwhile some times post can be seen or understand in the way it was not intended thereby giving a wrong interpretation and understanding which also misleads the public  or misinform the public

If we are more critical in responding to fake news and more critical in thinking about the government, then the government is the one most likely to spread fake news to its citizens because they control the system. And what needs to be emphasized is that organized lies will trump the truth.

Undermining news by putting everything under same umbrella of "news" has been tool for fascists since the start. And i am afraid that it will become worse, because AI can produce more fake news faster then people can debunk them. One problem with this is that this seems to make people believe less even at traditional media, because they have been sold the idea that every media is fake, so they can't determine what's real and what's not.

In my country, media literacy and spotting misinformation is an essential part of civics education in my country, and i kinda wish that other countries would adapt that in their school system.

We can't tell who's giving the best information until we see it happening and trying to trust the source where the information is coming from is another since trust is very hard to just let out. Some persons find it fun to give out fake news for no go good reason and it causes a lot of panic that can also lead to something serious like fear and death but they will always see it as a harmless Joke.
How can it be stopped or how do we believe and trust the person letting out the information? It could be true someone is saying but lack of trust is the problem we face because of past experience we have had, so we don't believe everything we hear but is not every thing is fake.

I am surprised how you think that. It's still pretty easy to spot generic AI graphics / videos if you have been using it a lot. There are some patterns you can focus on and this unnatural professional, clean, sharp and staged look, because algorithm prefers those "cool" looking results.

There will be time when they are indistinguishable from reality, but that isn't the case yet, and hopefully there will always be counter tech that can analyze and recognize computer rendered material.

You would know, given the amount of disinformation you are putting out daily and assuming that people wouldn't fact check them, because they don't want to "wast" their time.

That's just part of "flooding the zone" tactics, which is quite destructive when it comes to civil discourse. But it's very beneficial tool for fascism, when rulers want to abolish intellectuals and undermine their authority and expertise.

Yes, you made a point here, however, we should also consider that in any situation whereby more than two people attest to a fact about something, then there is likely the possibility for an iota of truth in what they are saying, we cant always work by 70% of anything likely to be the way it should be, though i still agrees with you to an extent on the extent how the truth may be hidden form the people and only a few or even none may know about the actual fact, but the common occurrences is when we often have the majority having the same or similar focal view about something.

Years before Trump came for his second term, nobody would think that top news sources like CNN were spreading wrong information to the people. It's demeaning to see that even the TV stations share cooked up information, as for social media it's no longer shocking.
