Would the profitability of it change?
Be very wary of relying on JavaScript for security on crypto sites. The site can change the JavaScript at any time unless you take unusual precautions, and browsers are not generally known for their airtight security.

It would depend on how much smoothing happened.

Some alt coins retarget every block, but use the last 100-200 blocks rather than just the last block.

Using everyblock would produce high diff flunctuations when big miners/pools go off/on that would not be good.
