Slaughtered Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska looked up at her killer with terror in her eyes after he repeatedly stabbed her with a pocket knife, as no passengers came immediately to her aid, disturbing newly-released surveillance footage shows.

The new extended clip from the Aug. 22 attack on the Lynx Blue Line train shows the 23-year-old cowering in fear and covering her face with her hands after the shocking, unprovoked attack, allegedly carried out by homeless repeat felon Decarlos Brown Jr.

Zarutska, who had come to the US in 2022 seeking safety after Russia invaded her country, pulls up her legs, which can be seen spattered with blood in the video.

https://nypost.com/2025/09/09/us-news/ukrainian-refugee-iryna-zarutskas-look-of-horror-after-she-was-fatally-stabbed-on-train-as-her-final-moments-are-revealed/

It comes as the FBI announced on Monday that Brown was hit with federal charges on top of the state murder rap he already faces. The penalty includes the possibility of the death sentence if he is convicted.

She then falls to the floor about 15 seconds later, the video shows.

Another voice — believed to be that of a fellow passenger — then says “he got that white girl.”

The video shows multiple passengers looking shocked and confused, before a man in a gray hoodie stands up and follows Brown down the train, while a woman in red glances over at Zarutska before turning back and looking out the window.

Heroic passengers tried to perform CPR on the victim, as one man took his shirt off to dress her wound, WSOCTV reported.

Another ran to tell the train operator what had happened and get them to stop the train, and Brown was arrested as he stepped off the train by officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

A trail of blood was seen left behind by Brown as he walked down the train car before ripping off his hoodie.

Brown was seen watching Zarutska for some time after she sat down in a seat in front of him, before pulling out what appeared to be a pocket knife.

Dems and the liberal media have been accused of ignoring the murder of Zarutska in North Carolina.

A career criminal, he had 13 prior convictions, including for armed robbery, and was released without bail and a trial pending when he allegedly killed Zarutska.

He was federally charged with one count of committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system, FBI Director Kash Patel said.

“The brutal attack on Iryna Zarutska on the Charlotte Light Rail was a disgraceful act that should never happen in America. The FBI jumped to assist in this investigation immediately to ensure justice is served, and the perpetrator is never released from jail to kill again,” Director Patel said in a statement.

“We will seek the maximum penalty for this unforgivable act of violence — he will never again see the light of day as a free man,” Bondi said.

It is hoped the federal charge will bring Zarutska’s family “a measure of justice,” the local FBI bureau chief in Charlotte said.

“We hope this federal charge will help bring her family a measure of justice and the courts will hold the subject charged in this horrific act accountable,” FBI Charlotte Special Agent in Charge, James C Barnacle Jr., said on Tuesday. “Everyone in this country deserves to go to work, to school, or just across town without fear of being attacked.”

america believes in the 2nd amendment and 4th amendment, where someone is allowed and should be required to defend themselves and their property with equal and fair use of force

so america would deam life for a life to mean death sentance for murder

however my opinion
a life for a life should be obvious. but meaning lifetime in prison with no chance of parole as first minimum option for murder.
these days though "life" sentence seems to be only like 15-20 years before a chance of parole. which is not actually "life"(facepalm)

if this was a first time offence, no history of victimising or malice previously. where there might be mitigating reasons to suddenly do a malicious attack .. then life sentence of prison. but this is a serial perpetrator with multiple previous criminal charges(14), which has not taught him any lessons... so then yes, more reason to push for death penalty. especially in america that has a constitution that allows for equal penalty for equal act (equal use of force)

..
the parts of america's law system i question.. is the reason why he even has the chance to actually be punished to the max..(endless time in prison/death penalty) is not the act, is not the why, is not the who .. but simply the where..
..because it was on a public transport system is the reason it rose to the threshold of a federal crime, which allows for life means life penalty.. if the same heinous malicious act happened in a taxi or just the street, it would have just been a state level justice which would have probably seen him get a lessor sentence, even with previous known crimes attached to his rapsheet

but then i find americas sentencing guidelines messed up anyways. where murderers and rapists get less time than financial/non-violent crimes
Eg if this is pushed back down to state level justice, where it ends up as a 15-20year sentance (far less than sam-bankman-freed(FTX fraudster)) then it really shows america has lost its mind and needs to change its priorities

Yes he should be sentenced to death for the cold, heartless, unprovoked murder of Iryana. She fled Ukraine to escape war & found an even more dangerous situation on the train with this animal. He should be made an example of, his death should be live screened. This can not be allowed, the poor girl deserves justice.

Thanks for your comments so far everyone and keeping my poll relevant. For transparency's sake I already voted in favour of the death sentence so the victims family gets some payback at least however this "apparent" hate crime should not have happened in the first place to a young woman who came to this country in order to feel safe from war.

What I find disappointing is the reaction from some able bodied men on the train and their lack of courage in their failure to take down this degenerate with extreme prejudice although many did try to help her once she collapsed and realised what had happened after the coward had left the immeadiate scene of the crime.

It saddens me greatly and I feel terrible for her family who will have to live out their days in grief after this sub human scumbags actions.

Please do not forget to vote if you haven't already done so, so that I can guage the sentiment among the community here about the death penalty in these violent criminal cases. Please be reminded that each user is entitled to only one vote on the poll.

What I find disappointing is the reaction from some able bodied men on the train and their lack of courage in their failure to take down this degenerate with extreme prejudice

but in the real world there are no supermen that can stop a speeding bullet before it hurts anyone. usually stabbings happen so quick people dont have time to react,

from what i can see of the edited videos(clipped/blurred) flying around the internet. is after the attack even Iryna Zarutska cant beleive what just happened and not even realise how bad her injuries are. so for other train passengers at off-set angles thus unable to see it all, may not have known it was a "brutal stabbing" initially, and instead thought it may have just been a bad punch fight between a couple.

many times we see it. how getting involved in other peoples business back-fires on the 'have a go hero' so most people keep themselves to themselves to avoid the risk of harm to themselves but would rightfully help out once they spot injuries after a fight

although many did try to help her once she collapsed and realised what had happened after the coward had left the immeadiate scene of the crime.

the one guy in grey sweater got up when the attack happened and followed the stabber, obviously putting out the call to the cops giving description and direction of escape, as the stabber was stopped by cops before he even got out of the station. and yes when others realised the extent of the injuries quickly swooped in..

For an outsider, i feel like this case gets a press so much because it's being used to back up a narrative.

You might as well ask if mass shooters, Cops that kill defenceless people, January 6th Capitol attackers that killed cops, child abusers, murderers or sex offenders should get death sentences. If you take them case by case to push a narrative to ignore statistics, i feel like we are focusing on wrong issues.

I don't have an opinion other then that every case should be go by the book and not via some mob justice on how you feel about it, but then again, it's not my country.

We are talking about cold blodded murderers here and are clearly refering only to this case so your point is moot. Does it "offend" you that an innocent white girl who is slaughtered in public by a violent balck man with many criminal convictions who then walked around the train calmly boasting how he killed the "white girl" is having "too much" media attention? Nope there hasn't been enough and not a fraction of the attention those Jan 6 rioters got so quit your lies trying to push your false narrative with all your whataboutery and deflection.

While I agreed with the OP on a previous thread I am not sure I can condone an eye for an eye. Lord Jesus Christ said that an eye for an eye only leaves both parties blinded. It is clear that this man is demonically posessed and in need of deliverance and if he does receive the death sentence he should be afforded the ability to repent for his crimes in order to seek salvation for his soul.

It is tragic that the poor lady that was killed like this by this person but it is clear that this person is not mentally ill and under spiritual attack. If anything it is the Judges fault who released him to be a danger to the public instead of ensuring he was kept away from people until he was no longer a threat to both himself and others.

I pray for both the victim and the perpetrator along with both families.

well murder and news should take precedence in news media compared to pictures of puppies and commercial adverts. but yes certain murders get highlighted more whereby others get hidden behind stories of reporters visiting puppies that do tricks

the reason this particular murder is getting attention is because its not a murder that happened on the street. it happened on a train so gets uprated automatically to federal law. which i still feel is weird for 2 murders of same violent method to be treated differently simply because of the transport used.
if the guy followed her and then stabbed her as she was about to get a taxi, he would have only been handled at state level.

the other thing is this violent action is also a springboard for lobbyists to want to push other agenda's

im all for introducing more laws that protect people, without limiting freedoms.. so lets see how the ulterior agenda lobby groups decide to use this violent incident for their own motives. lets hope the loss of Iryna life brings positive results. and not turned into political game play to harm/limit more people

Amazing how quiet the media is about this racially motivated hate crime.

It's something we've come to accept I guess.  I don't understand how these news outlets are still in business.  Is it the advertisers who are to blame?  What needs to happen to change this behavior.  I'm not as shocked about them pretending this wasn't racially motivated as I was when they said that Charlie Kirk was shot by his own supporter shooting off a gun in celebration.  The mental gymnastics these people perform to try and justify their insane views on things makes you want to not even listen to them.  I wish I didn't know the nonsense they say.

Amazing how quiet the media is about this racially motivated hate crime.

quiet? um.. the media have been talking about this crime.. thats how we know about it compared to the hundreds of other murders that happen every year no one gets to hear about. media has been talking about him just days ago

as for his reason for doing it, media tells us last week that he is a paranoid schizophrenic and was having a manic episode, he was supposedly(according to media) on his way to a mental hospital but just broke before getting there

as for why media are not saying much every minute.. there is not much new stuff to report until things move more in the justice system., this is where there is always an empty time between being charged vs a trial(next court appearance sept 19th)

what is more interesting is with a previous diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenic and previous crimes, this may open up media/government investigations into how the justice system failed prior to this event, whereby more could have been done to ensure he sought treatment under previous crimes bail/parole conditions or put conditions on things like not carrying any weapons due to known risks he has to himself and others

..
update based on me looking deeper.
seems media is still talking about the case

seems government are interested in the past judicial mistakes that could have avoided this incident
judge stokes presided over decarlos brown jr's previous case releasing him on bail with one condition 'promise to appear' and is presiding over his current case now

In a letter to a leading judge, Chief Judge of North Carolina Judicial District 26, 10 Republicans questioned judge Stokes, a magistrate judge for the Charlotte District in Mecklenburg County Court, North Carolina, over her decision to release Brown in a case earlier this year.
They said this decision gave "grounds for removal."..  "that releasing Brown had devastating consequences"
Quote
By releasing a repeat violent offender on nothing more than a written promise to appear, Magistrate Stokes displayed a willful failure to perform the duties of her office and engaged in conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice,
Her decision has undermined public confidence in the judicial system and exposed the community to wholly preventable harm

I blame the government for this senseless killing. How would the government allow an individual with mental health issues to roam the street? I read he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and couldn't get medical assistance because a mental health hospital couldn't admit him due to a lack of space. I think he should serve life imprisonment without parole because he is a danger to society.

Dems and the liberal media have been accused of ignoring the murder of Zarutska in North Carolina.

Her death shouldn't be politicised or used to score a cheap political point. People lost a loved one; rather, it should serve as a wake-up call for the government to perform better.

What I find disappointing is the reaction from some able bodied men on the train and their lack of courage in their failure to take down this degenerate with extreme prejudice although many did try to help her once she collapsed and realised what had happened after the coward had left the immeadiate scene of the crime.

The killer acted so fast that he took many people by surprise. Since it was an unprovoked attack, it will be difficult to assume that such a thing would happen. He just stabbed a severally at a fast pace, which was unexpected. Secondly, it would be dangerous to confront someone who is armed without something to scare him or defend yourself.

You are right because non of those people there knew that this would happen and we can even see how relax everyone is with there smartphones, so actually by the time all this are happening some of them might've been traumatized seeing what is happening all of a sudden so they could even barely think straight let alone try to stop the person from what he was doing to the lady, perhaps they could have even be scared that he could stab them also after he must have finished with her, so actually those other people acted on fear because if they had known the intention of that killer they wouldn't have watch it happen.

The left wing liberal media organisations seem to be pushing the whole "let's antagonise, poke and provoke whitey" to see if we can set black against white, muslim against jew against christian, men against women, children against parents, humanity against God. They literally are the devils advocates at this stage.

I think I do agree with you on this because why would a judge let free an individual that have being involved in multiple criminal activities up to the thirteenth time and all you could do was to grant him a free bail back into the society without proper rehabilitation. The state should have itself to be blamed partly for this 14th murder case perpetrated by Brown because it was something that could have been avoided was he remanded in prison while prosecution to his previous crimes were ongoing. Not sure any form of justice right now would give succour to Zarutska’s for their loss.

to clarify some details about the previous arrest(jan 2025). it was not one of violence it was misuse of 911 call service

Quote
in January this year, when court records say Brown was at a hospital and someone called police about him. When they arrived, that's when records say Brown told them someone gave him a "manmade material" that was controlling him. Officers advised Brown that the issue was a medical issue and that there was nothing further they could do, Brown became upset with officers' answers and with officers still on scene, brown called 911 to speak with police.

Officers then arrested him on a charge of misuse of 911.

A judge later released him without bail. In July, a different judge agreed with a defence attorney's request to have Brown mentally evaluated for competency to understand the court proceedings he faced. It's unclear whether Brown was evaluated before Zarutska's killing on the light rail

just wanting a competency eval simply to see if he can stand in court for charge of misuse of 911 was not enough. a proper psych evaluation and bond conditions would have been better as a minimum, but because the 'crime' of january was just mis-use of 911(non violent charge). it would not have been strong enough to hold him in jail until that trial(penalty: civil fine, no prison time)

obviously if someone has mental issues. then it should have been mandated that bail conditions should be made even if there was no bail amount set. conditions such as no carrying weapons, especially when the judges in january and july knew of his far far previous crimes before 2025 which did involve violence and weapons and now knowledge of mental disorder

i feel that because it was civil(fine penalty) and he was homeless so had financial hardship to then not be fair to punish via bail $amount$ before even a guilty judgement penalty(fine), which then judges then didnt set any conditions due to lack of setting a bail $amount$..

normally im all for people whom are arrested for non violent crimes to not get stuck in jail simply due to excess high bail $amounts that are unreasonable to pay even the 10%(via bondsman). especially for first time offenders of non violent crimes or where punishment if found guilty is that of just a fine

but in this case there should still be a provision of setting conditions even with a 'free' bond' for people with a further deeper/darker past of crimes that were violent and criminal. whereby a bond of some kind should have been thought about more

also with previous crimes 2007-2017 there should have been things like 'three strikes' whereby continual committing crimes brings harsher results, even for petty stuff

It is quite chocking this news has not become more widespread, I only managed to get this information because it became viral and there are some people talking about it on YouTube and also on other social media, had this been the other way around (a white European woman merciless killing a black man for no reason) then we would have seen this news all around the internet and also in mainstream media, in a similar manner to what happened with George Floyd.

Anyways, I would be okey with this monster being incarcerated for life or forced to work to repay society what he have done to it.
Personally, Trump should do something similar to what Bukele is doing in El Salvador, and turning all inmates in the United States to full time workers.

It is quite chocking this news has not become more widespread,

it actually is widespread, there is even updates every few days and its not even got to the trial yet
Quote from: foxnews 17th sept
The indictment, handed down on September 15, formally charges Brown with first-degree murder.

Brown was taken into custody that night and later hospitalized for treatment before he was transported to the Mecklenburg County Detention Center. He currently remains there without bond.

An order was also filed for Brown to be committed to Central Regional Hospital – Butner for a period not to exceed 60 days for observation and treatment, to determine his capacity to proceed. An administrative court hearing is scheduled for this October.

If Brown does not request a formal arraignment within 21 days of receiving the indictment, a not guilty plea will be entered on his behalf by the court. At this time, Brown has not entered a plea.

but there wont be much new to say until october 6thish(21days after indictment to enter a plea - administrative hearing)
and then probably trial might start as late as 15th november (upto 60 days of medical evaluation)
so not much new news will come out regularly between then

whats more concerning is what about the other ~2000 murder per year that get no screentime at all
