Is stopping really the best way to learn from gambling addiction?

Good topic here, and since I am someone who went through this experience, after some downs and ups during my own journey in recovery, without any help from rehab centers or anything related to paid recovery. I took the decision to stop totally any kind of gambling for a period of time, during the first days my mind was working like an addiction seeking for that dose of dopamine and adrenaline, tried my best to keep all my time busy… after few months things got better. However, I managed to gamble again without any attachment feeling or disappointing my efforts, I didn’t really feel that urge of gambling once again after losing or spending more time since I already have things to do.

I personally went through a self recovery and learned a lot during this experience, I have watched hundreds of videos, read books on how addiction functions in our brains generally with all types of addiction.

My short answer is that stopping can be a better solution for addicted people, while also can be just an option for others who learned a lesson and understand themselves.

If the gambler is heavily addicted to gambling, the best form of advice to give to the gambler is to leave gambling for the main time and look for something else to distract the person from gambling.

But if the person is just on his way to getting addicted, then they can learn from their mistake and set a more stricter rule for their self which will guide/prevent them from getting addicted, someone who is already addicted will fine it difficult to work on himself while still engaging on gambling activity the best is to ignore gambling during that process.

Yes it can, if only the gambler himself would be able to stick to his decision because decision matters alot in gambling. The truth is that, don't allow gambling to control you because it's only when you over look gambling that it'll become a problem for you. Though, as gambler that is surfering addiction, the best way to overcome it is stopping it at once because sometimes gambling can be tenting and immediately you go back, it will be very hard for you to realize. By then you would definitely ended up into another addiction.

Everyone has what works for them and they allow can decide on what to do while fighting off gambling addiction, for some gamblers learning could mean stopping completely and for some it could be reducing the amount you spend on gambling on a daily basis. Personally, I always say that anyone that quits gambling completely after getting addicted was never a true gambler and was never a never of sports but just wanted to make money through gambling and failed at it, stopping completely might make you get addicted again the moment you have the urge to bet but reducing the amount you spend on gambling on a daily basis will help you control your feelings more and help you make wise decisions in gambling.

It is best to stop gambling if you are addicted, since if you try to reduce the frequency with which you gamble you will tend to return to the addictive cycle, so stopping gambling will always be the best option for someone who suffers from gambling addiction, because if that person could really control it, it would mean that they are not addicted, but that they were beginning to fail at gambling or were on the way to addiction.

In my opinion, both. When you quit, it means you’ve learned your lesson, you’ve given up because maybe you realized you won’t get anything back. But you can still gamble and have learned your lesson too. Just like me, I can say I’ve learned my lesson even though I’m still playing. Not going beyond my means is also a lesson. Don’t take an extra mile if what you only have is a few meters. I’ve done it before, and it’s the worst situation I have ever been in as a gambler. I vowed never to be in that situation again, even if I’m still playing.

In my opinion, both. When you quit, it means you’ve learned your lesson, you’ve given up because maybe you realized you won’t get anything back. Is there a way to finally quit gambling? I don't think so because I know a man that had been so addicted to gambling and almost giving up as a gambler but later this man was seen in a casino playing bets. If you have not been so addicted to gambling, you can stop but when you're addicted to it for years, it will be very hard for you to stop. People that are not yet addicted to gambling should be happy and make sure they don't over gamble because when it reach the stage of addiction, it can be very serious and uneasy to stop.

Quitting is not that easy for a gambling addict and i wonder if they learn from their mistakes because they are still under the influence of addiction so i doubt if they actually learn a lesson. The only people that can say they have learnt from their mistakes are those who gamble with huge amounts and often losses because they believed that a bet is sure which made them stake with huge amount while thinking that they will win. Someone who have learnt from their mistakes will be so cautious while gambling so that they don't repeat same mistake again.

The truth is, you can’t just stop gambling at once and you expect it to all be over when you’re alread addicted.. If you truly want to quit then you have to take multiple breaks,  increase the break intervals from time to time and before you know it it will be back to normal.. Then you can now choose to FINALLY quit or not
One thing to note is that, during those breaks, you need to divert your attention into something that will distract you entirely from gambling.. without that , those breaks might not really work.

Most of the gamblers that have learned did quit and if there is no way for them to learn from the very mistakes that they did.
What they might think of is by having more mistakes and problems before they have finally decided to quit.
But quitting doesn't mean that you're going to leave gambling forever. Everyone is free to be back anytime when they have finally have moved on.

The big problem with people getting addicted is that they don’t notice it happening, by the time they realize, they’re already completely hooked. I, for example, always try to be very careful not to get addicted. What I do is avoid playing every day; I only play a few times a week, and that’s been working well for me. It’s really tough when it stops being fun and starts becoming a dependency.

Learning from your mistakes is a version of learning from experience. It is expected that when you have learnt about the potential risks of gambling then you should you conscious so that you don't fall prey.

When you have also made misstates such that brings you regrets then you should be able to readjust. If course either be your anxieties for gambling was too high but winning expectations has not be coming. Of course it hurts.

If it was by taking too much betting risks you can always adjust from it if you really don't want to get hurt repeatedly if only you can identify those mistakes because addicted gamblers Will never have such oversight of learning from their mistakes. admitting your faults.

- Some gamblers continue but adopt different approaches.

For me, the best option is to stop gambling if it no longer brings joy. Gambling isn't for everyone, and we shouldn't force ourselves to continue when we see no future or happiness in it. Living a stressful life is not sustainable. Therefore, we should choose the path that leads to our well-being, rather than one that triggers regrets and disappointments.

Stopping is best for those that forever gets vulnerable to gambling urge no matter the energy put in to quit, they easily get trapped whenever the thought comes so the only solution to this category of gambler is to stop completely because they cannot gambler responsibly.
Those that actually need to reduce the speed of gambling everyday are those who cannot stop but be able to learn from his mistakes and adapt to the new habit cultivated. These category of gamblers are very strong and highly had self control attitude, i mean they can bend to any habit they set their mind to.

Everyone is different, for some persons, it is best they stop gambling on other while for some  they continue gambling and are very careful this time not to fall into the mistake of getting addicted again, because it depends on the persons mindset of what he can live with through his life, since gambling is for the strong hearted and not for weak.

Managing gambling addiction after coming out of it is always not easy because it has to do with your life, so it is better to stop gambling entirely if you can't cope with the after addiction life.

If someone got addicted to gambling and wanted to get away from addiction, it is essential for person to slowly get away from gambling.  Others may abruptly stop their gambling activity but some take it slow and steady before leaving his gambling activities. Other try to regain their control reason why the don't stop but have more control on their gambling activity.

If one is just hooked to gambling and is not a gambling addict, then I think a short break is need to unhook him to gambling.  By leaving gambling for sometime makes the player to reflect on things he did and fixt things that is needed in order to regain his control on his gambling activity.

Stopping is not the sign that the gambler had learned but rather it is a sign that the gambler is giving up his desire to control his gambling activities.  Since he chooses to stop gambling, there is no need to be a responsible gambler.

That could be considered a valid point if we consider gambling a mistake but in the context of "learn from your mistakes I think we realize the situation is quite complex, as the learning objectives here can differ slightly depending on each person's understanding.

I personally always tell myself that, but from a gambler's perspective I don't consider gambling a mistake. When we gamble and cross the line it's something we should learn from and learn more about self-control to prevent it from happening again. Of course this is helpful because even if we still gamble learning from past mistakes can at least minimize losses and far more severe impacts.
We can see that many people are trapped because they don't learn to evaluate themselves and rely solely on momentary emotions when dealing with gambling.

I said stop gambling and do a medical help. I don't think a mere learning from your mistake can cure or help your addiction. Addiction is an illness regardless what kind of addiction it is. It is a mental health issue and people with this kind of illness should ask medical assistance. Or else you will suffer of it in the long run. Most people who suffer to this and its too late for them to get cured, end their life.

I understand the point you are trying to make, and I think it depends on the person in question. Let me say that most people can be able to learn from their mistakes, by correcting their wrongs in a way that they'll reduce the rate or the level at which they normally do some certain things before, in this way they have learnt from their mistakes. But to some, correcting their mistake means to stop gambling totally since they believe that they can't be able to do without those things they where told to reduce, And this means addiction. Because anything you do and can't stop or reduce the rate at which you do it for any reason has become an addiction.

In fact, it is very difficult to stop gambling, it seems like our brains have been washed, if we are really able to stop, that is the best way, but if we don't, learn from past mistakes so that they don't happen again, be more self-disciplined and the most important thing is to manage your gambling finances.

Learning to stop and eventually stoping is the best way to stop addiction but it is easier said than actually having the courage to do so, so if an addict can be disciplined enough to stop gambling that is a win for him. But coming back to continue gambling is another story entirely because if they cannot be able to control themselves to gamble responsibly they can become worse off than before. When you quit gambling because of addiction don't try to come back and gamble again until you're sure that you can totally control your addiction.
