Gopher is an early text based protocol that has been supplanted by the modern html based internet. If you consider Bitcoin to be a monetary based financial system, then it would seem to be an essentially text based communication medium. This would fit in well with the Gopher communication concept. I found a few discussions about Gopher on bitcoin talk between 2012 and 2014, but nothing since. In view of the current attack on the Bitcoin blockchain, and the apparent corruption of Core development, would it be possible to add a Gopher communication option to the Knots node software?
The Gopher protocol was originally developed in the early '90s as a predecessor to the World Wide Web. It is functional as a system for document retrieval with menus of links. Its server does not maintain an open, persistent connection, thus, trying to run a Bitcoin node on Gopher would be basically impossible and almost like running a social media platform using only plain text emails.
Also, to answer your question, it is possible to add a Gopher communication option to the Knots node software, but it would be a problem when we try to access the primary Bitcoin node functions that is demanded to complete a successful P2p transaction.
