Just wanted to share this. My kid made a small parlay bet, less than a dollar, and it almost hit with just one leg missed. I’m actually proud of him, not because of the bet itself, but because he’s learning the game the right way. I’ve always been open about sports betting with him. I don’t overfeed him info or push him into it, but he’s naturally curious and wants to learn. He’s still in school, and I give him around $30 a week, so he’s betting within what he can afford which is good discipline for his age.

Seeing him enjoy it responsibly and treat it as something to study rather than just gamble on luck, that’s already a win for me as a father.

He’s just 17 years old and already has a driver’s license. Not sure how he managed to create an account, but it’s not really a big deal anymore since a lot of sites somehow still let minors in. Anyway, he seems to think maturely, so I don’t really see his age as much of an issue. As long as he bets within his limits, he should be fine.

I will prefer not to teach my children how to gamble but still always warn them not to use high amount of money to gamble. If I see any bad news regarding gambling addiction, I will always show them for them to learn from it. But I will not say they should not gamble after they are 18 years of age but they should be very careful and not use high amount of money to gamble. Our opinion is different about this.

It’s better to teach your kids how to gamble responsibly so they won’t feel the need to hide what they’re doing. Kids often go down the wrong path when they’re not guided, but if you’re there to guide them, you can actually be proud knowing you did your part. I wouldn’t say don’t teach him to gamble. he’s a man, and eventually, he’ll learn about it anyway. It’s just better that he does it under your supervision while he’s still a minor. In a year, he’ll be able to enter a casino freely since most require 18+.

He is guiding his kid so for sure the OP knows what he is doing. At least he is there for him, unlike many kids who could be secretly betting behind their parents. When I was even younger than 17 I would do this behind my parents back.

And to be honest, my father is a gambler but the didn't directly teach me how to gamble, but somewhat I was influence by him in sports betting. But then when I grew older and have a decent job, but of us are betting the same sports.

Well this might sounds funny to you but I personally do not find it funny though I don't know how Old he is, but no matter his age my Major concern is when you said that he's still a student. for the fact that he's still a student I think you're not supposed to be feeding him with gambling info because he got dreams to chase so introducing gambling to him can literally affect his performance academically.

You might be an example for how a dad should have brought up a kid even with gambling habits, I am not sure I could copy you. In my assumption, every kid must be too curious on what their parents are doing and it is genetically proven that they could beat their parents in terms of better skills and discipline. This is how our habits and knowledge inherit to next generation still proper guideline should be highly mandatory to grow them up to our expectation.

Honestly after your sharing, I may start introducing my gambling to kid because so far I have hided all my betting to my family even I made profits. My thinking so far is, not misguiding them by introducing gambling to them but now onward I wish to change my view, thanks for eye opening share.

On a norms I would've talked against letting a minor gamble especially when he's doing it with the money you give him for his upkeep in school, atleast he should earn his own money so he'll know the feeling of losing it to the bookies when or incase he recklessly spends it in search of big wins but then he has your support and guidance moreover the fact you brought it here shows that you really want to ensure he does it responsibly and you're proud that he's following that route, hopefully he'll be lucky in his next trial but keep encouraging him to gamble responsible.

To young to engage on this type of betting and I will never be proud if my child do this. The risk to experience addiction is high and your child is so young to handle those situation.

Maybe for now he's doing good, but later on he might fall on something that can put him in more bigger troubles.

I'd rather try to introduce my child to learn and play sports that they like. Rather than try to became a good sports bettor. But its your choice since its your child and hope you can handle well his future actions.

OP, you have started a very tricky topic and you should prepare for "attacks" on you as a parent Just prepare mentally and dont take close to what people post. Remember, you are the parent and you raise your kid they way you want. Not the way society want.

You know what, I am going to support your choice of letting him gamble. It seems you have situation under control. Based on your posts, you seems to be the guy who understands how gambling can be dangerous and how quick it become like that, so you know when to interfere in kids gambling experience. Let him have taste of gambling now, when you monitor him and still have that "listen to what I say" parents ultimate phrase working. Instead he would gamble on his own or among fake advisors.

Almost a hit there mate, unfortunately that Denver Nuggets vs New Orleans Pelicans missed but i'm also amazed on how quickly he learned about sports betting even if he is still schooling. Though i have second thought on this scenario when my child is gambling but on the other hand let's also put a limit on their gambling activities, i mean that starts with a small amount for now but time comes when he will wager substantial amount and ultimately addicted to gambling which could ruin his future. how old is your child? we definitely have different local currencies because $30 can already be an average college student's allowance for the week it is a pretty big amount still but i do not judge you just surprised with the amount difference when converted in my country!

We give kids their allowance based on what we can afford. If we’re more financially comfortable, we can give them a bit more. But gambling is a different story. Kids shouldn’t be encouraged to gamble until they reach the legal age because even with proper guidance, it’s still risky for them to learn it too early. That’s the risk OP has to take, and if things don’t turn out well, there’s really no one to blame but himself.

A nice analysis having 9/10 parlay bet. What’s the age of your kid because I’m assuming he is just an elementary school student the way you view him as a kid which I’m a bit concerned about his interest on sportsbook.

However, as long you can guide him and gave him a budget I believe this is somehow okay to maintain.

OP, I hope that you let him know about the consequences of gambling so that he can understand what he's into because you will not be there with him always. Whenever, you someone that suffers from gambling addiction show him the person and explain the reason why he's an addict so that your son can always put that at the back of mind to guide him from gambling excessively.

You supervise and pay attention to your child's gambling. It is a good thing when you and your child or other family members can be more open about gambling. Gradually, the child may understand what should not be done or what they can do in gambling.

He's still a child and very curious about many things. Be sure to always check on him; you may never know he is betting more because he wants to explore betting further, especially if he is winning.
This is not the right age to teach children how to bet; it's better that he concentrate on what matters most at his age. There are many traps in gambling that your child may get into, and you will regret it later on.
