Unemployment is what causes poverty, either you are self employed or works under a company or firm. The problem with depending on importation of goods, is based on poor or no refinery, if we can become fine producers of most imported goods, there will most end to unemployment and reduction in poverty.
I will agree that unemployment can cause poverty on a general context because a country that lack productivity or has deficit of production will have more poor people reason being that people will not engage in anything, even though some persons set up business of their own, how many people can they employ and how sustainable could such establishment be to those they employ, an economy that wants to grow must want to go into different production because a country is been rated with what they can give to other country, it doesn't have to be raw material but finished goods too, I know i have deviated alot but let me relate this to what is be discussed here.
Going by the topic of this thread, I will have to be straight forward, the country we are, has made some people to chanel their energy to a particular field which is tech, people no longer want to go into other other thing than that especially the younger generation.
You made a good point @Callido, if we can become producers of those good we import to our country here, it is assumed that we have solved a high percentage of poverty here but how can that be done without the help and encouragement from our government.
