I am close to research institutions and I have a couple of friends. I can tell you research and development are key areas the government don't play around with, they are well grounded and well funded and you see this internet and AI stuff, they are the least problems of development, researchers don't even consider most of this things. i agree with you op but there is a catch that nobody really talks about which is the distraction factor sure the internet has all the knowledge of the universe basically for free but it also has infinite distractions so the barrier to entry isnt money or school anymore its discipline.

back in the day if you went to a library you were there to study but now if you open a browser to learn coding or trading you end up watching shorts or arguing on x for 3 hours so the "gap" is now between people who can focus and people who have fried dopamine receptors.
