The banditry and killings in Kwara State and Nigeria as a whole are becoming alarming. Nigeria is no longer secure. The soldiers who were trained to protect lives are now afraid for their own safety.
A recent case involved victims who were kidnapped in Kwara North and released a few weeks ago. According to the account of one of the victims, after the family paid the ransom, the bandits first blindfolded them and transported them on motorcycles. When they reached a certain location, they were unblindfolded and gathered in a field. A few hours later, a helicopter with “POLICE” written boldly on it came to pick them up. It flew them to a large open field surrounded by soldiers and handed them over to the military. They were later taken to Zobi Barracks Hospital.
According to the victim, before they could be formally released, the Commander insisted that the Governor of Kwara State must be present. The family members were denied access until the Governor arrived. The following day, the news and newspapers reported that troops had “rescued” the kidnapped victims, showing photos of the Governor and soldiers with the victims.
In my view, the government and other actors are playing games with the lives of Nigerians. Because of greed and the struggle for power, it seems that some groups within government may be sponsoring these bandit groups. The relationship between bandits and soldiers appears suspicious; they seem to be either cooperating or avoiding each other.
From the victim’s story, a helicopter with “POLICE” written on it picked the victims and delivered them to soldiers. Also, bandits were able to communicate directly with soldiers and family members when negotiating ransom. So why can’t our network providers track their locations and conversations?
Another question is: why can’t the helicopter be tracked? Today, when you buy a car or motorcycle, you must do several registrations and paperwork, and you are given a plate number before you can freely drive around. So why can’t the government track a helicopter and hold the pilot accountable? A helicopter is not as common as a taxi or motorcycle.
My point is: the government is aware of the sponsors of these bandit groups and is playing games with the lives of innocent people. I have been thinking about this deeply, and it gives me a headache because I cannot understand why.
