Saying goodbye to windows 11 finally but I have a question

It has been 8 years now since I have used Linux last and I read online that Linux is no longer the old Linux, things are now better they said, which makes me want to try things out, I ran Bazzite and Proton and I was surprised how far Linux have come, I am finally getting rid of the lagging windows 11 but then I remembered that I have my Electrum wallet on Windows 11, also my metamask wallet too.

Before I finally wipe my second nvme drive where my windows 11 is installed I want to know if Electrum is supported on Linux and also Metask too. I will also like to know if anyone is using Linux on this forum, did yoh noticed how crazily stable Linux have became too+.

I was very specific in saying that I use Windows exclusively for gaming and that I use Ubuntu for work and to run my wallets. I believe that's quite clear, isn't it? I have two computers and use a different operating system on each…

Regarding using wallets on the same computer, whether for work or gaming, you just need to take the necessary security measures to avoid exposing them to danger. Not everyone has two computers or uses dual boot on the one they have.

I would say it really depends. If your source of games is gaming platforms like Steam and you're only downloading known games, then I wouldn't really about it. If you're not buying the games, and you're torrenting them instead then you definitely shouldn't be doing that.

All wallets or majority of wallets supports almost all OS, just a few will not support either of the available OS and the different devices it is built for. Wallets like Electrum which you used on Windows OS is very much supported on Linux by research and other likes of Atomic and Exodus Wallets.

I feel Windows OS is not safe enough to have wallet running on it, and besides it's security system by records is far unmatched with Linux/Ubuntu or other OS. I don't use any wallet on my Windows system, because it is used for public jobs which the navigation to some unsecured sites can pose a threat.

You won't have an issue with the installation of Electrum on Linux and the use of MetaMask. However, you still need to safely download the Electrum wallet by verifying the wallet.

In the meantime, it is not recommended to use your cryptocurrency wallet on the same computer that you use for gaming.

Most gamers using PC are usually tempted to get torrents , repacks… that’s the fun of gaming with a PC  .. else you can just go get a play station and buy some clean games.
Hence, if you want to continue gaming while still running your Linux then try dual booting, atleast you have different partitions to save your files but it’s much better you have a clean drive for it..

I would never do this.  It is convenient to have everything on the same device but this convenience means ZERO if you ever get your Bitcoin stolen by malware.

If you are running games on the same Operating System then I am assuming you will also download other software for your games, for your gaming equipment et cetera.  You may want to download games that are downloadable from websites that may or may not be secure.  You may want to install Browser extensions.  And I am assuming you will also browse the Internet on the same device, opening Email attachments et cetera.

Separating Bitcoin from the rest is ideal.  I would not risk an All In One unless you are going to run Qubes or doing the gaming and browsing in a Virtual Machine setup.

Linux really great now, and have more software available on it than before and if there isn't there are often a good alternative and in regarding wallets, every top wallet have their supported software on  linux distro(s), after all these devs often support privacy and are also users of Linux distributions.

You can still get malwares on linux, chances are just far less than windows which is typically the one targeted.

Honestly, I would not risk mixing wallets + gaming. You know what they say, it is best to err on the side of caution. Even reputed softwares could get exploited by bad actors.

If it's just a small amount though—for quick spending. I suppose it could work as the risk are more palatable.

I've been doing it and it's fine, the problem with others is that they're downloading pirated games and they're downloading it from websites that have a malware together with the game files. So, downloading and running games from official gaming platforms like Steam, Epic Games, GOG and other types, you should be fine. Although there were some reports about a few games in Steam that have included a malware but that's just only for unknown games.

Yes i do use Linux in office and at home i have windows also, most of Linux flavors are stable, and its more faster and use resources more efficient than windows, all my deployed on-premise servers are all working with no issue, barely needed maintenance, that's how stable Linux are, also in workstations besides you can you it free without having problem in os, MS office, it has thunderbird for email applications, libre office for MS office, free-ware and safe, what linux flavor are you using if you don't mind OP?

Various Linux distributions have come a long way and have become a lot more user friendly and smoother. I have used Ubuntu myself for various purposes, but I still have trouble with certain things that are more complicated in Linux compared to Windows. Like for example I like to have a strict control over my network and what application can access it and what cannot. In Windows I easily do it like a piece of cake using firewall (Eset Smart Security) with a couple of clicks, but in Linux you'd have to bend over backwards to be able to do the same!

Basically, software is hardware-dependent, meaning if you have a capable computer, you won't experience any lag when using any operating system, or you can minimize lag by reducing the installation, or reducing the background proccess of several applications that consume a lot of your computer performance processes. Personally, I am still a Windows user, but I often use Linux for several reasons, and I use Debian, which I find easier to use.

You can use Electrum on Linux through the official source attached by @Charles-Tim. However, you should always back up your drive before wiping it, as it may contain important data. Personally, I often back up the drive I am about to wipe, and I prepare another large drive for external use.

By the way, I use a Debian Linux distro on Windows using VMware, and luckily I didn't have any lag issues using a capable computer specification. Just for your information.

From a privacy perspective this does not bring you any advantages. Even from a safety perspective you are as vulnerable as the host, even if you ran the most secure OS in existence as a guest that does not do anything when the host is compromised. That is a good setup for experimenting and containerizing your workload but other than that you are still using Windows  -- you inherit all vulnerabilities and weaknesses of it. A Linux OS running Linux virtual machines is a very good security setup, but in the case of a Windows host it is not.

A novice should never experiment with Linux OS selection. You should go with the ones that are most widely supported, most widely used and most user friendly. Novices are not able to work around compatibility issues and lack of support for certain things or make their own fixes for some small bugs, therefore it is better to go with Mint or Ubuntu as a starting point. Alternatively if you want to play video games you could directly install SteamOS I think that they released it for public use now, unless I am mistaken. After you gain some familiarity with Linux and experience dealing with issues that may come across (they are rare now compared to the early days), then you can experiment with other flavors if you really want to.

Are W11 that much worse than W10? I have no problems with W10 when it comes to performing tasks, even though I'm not using a newer computer, but I have 20 GB of RAM and a solid AMD processor with which everything works almost perfectly. I got the impression that a lot of people complain about Windows OS, and on the other hand, they have computers with very poor performance, which then makes their daily use a very unpleasant experience.
