In my first instance of opening a bitcoin account,  a 12 word seed phrase was given me but then I lost it. Later on , I re-opened another account but this time, a 24 word seed phrase was given me. Does a 24 word seed phrase add more security to your asset  than a 12 word seed phrase?

Obiously, 12 word phrase have 128bits of entropy on the others hand 24 words phrase have 256bit of entropy,,, so that will be definitely take more time to brute-force than 12words.
For example if 12words phrase takes 1trillion years to brute-force then 24words will may be take some zillions? There is some euqaution for that you can get it from the google.

Further more here is a article for you- Are 24 word Bitcoin seed phrases better than 12 words for security?

Here is another BIP39 standard-
  • A 12-word phrase has 2048^12 possible combinations, which is approximately 5.4 x 10^39. That’s a 5 followed by 39 zeroes.
  • A 24-word phrase has 2048^24 possible combinations, or roughly 3 x 10^79.
So, for both cases, it could be possible if only Quantum Computers emerge.  Grin

The 12 word seed phrase takes a mathematical evaluation of (2^128) bits
  The 24 word seed phrase takes ( 2^128(2) )= 2^256 bits
This implies that the 24 word seed phrase is generated with more hash rate than the 12 word seed phrase. It is seemingly impossible to manipulate it because of the hashing power.
But nevertheless, whether 12 or 24 seed phrase, security still depends on the kind of wallet app. Some wallet apps are not non- custodial and so they can have access to your asset through your lost seed phrase.
Also, some people will still prefer the 12 word seed phrase to the 24 word seed phrase because it's easier to remember . A 24 word seed phrase will be more complex

A whole lot was said on the thread about the 12 or 24 seed phrase. From what I was able to pick,  the high hash rate of the 24 word, 256 bits  seed phrase makes  it more secure than the 12 word , 128 bits seed phrase.

Yes it true that the quantum computers if realistic in the long run can hamper the security of our assets but these quantum computer will require a lot of power about thousands of Kilowatt to decipher such large bits of entropy.

Can you share with us what wallet you are currently using that randomly generates a 12/24 seed phrase without asking if you are going to use a 24 or 12 seed phrase?

I believe you are using a different wallet than Electrum that has its own seed version. Electrum doesn't generate a 24-word seed or a BIP39 seed, but it's supported.

Take note it still depends on how we protect our wallet. The BIP39 seed, even though it is 12 phrases, is still hard to brute force, and you can have an extra passphrase to make it more secure and hard to brute-force.
A 24-word seed phrase is much more secure, yes, but having an extra passphrase in a 12-word seed should be enough to make your wallet secured.

It is true that having an extra passphrase will make the 12 word seed phrase more secure. But if we combine thesame 12 words with a different passphrase , it will automatically create a different wallet.
You may loose access to the original wallet without the correct passphrase. And that means loosing all your assets in that particular account.
The best thing might simply be to just to take enough time to cram the 12 words like 50 times

Not the seed particularly(the 12 words )  but your wallet  , the seed it self is already secured. The extra word is just your own layer of security it might still be possible  you likely form a generic word  that's  part of the wordlist (that doesn't  matter anyway but defeats the purpose of having  in the first place), you should create a word with different combination instead but make sure you keep it safe separately as well.

You can't rely on your brain as backup , you might think you've  memorised it now but later, after 3 > years, it turns out you've forgotten  part, order or all of it .  I know this was as a result of a reply from your  recent thread ; You don't  have to follow everything someone  comments on your thread, DYOR instead, just use those comments as guides.

Wallet backups are very important for your bitcoins as without backups, you can not recover your wallet if your original wallet was lost, broken and you are no longer be able to use your original wallet.

Back up your wallets is important, but there are many methods for wallet backups and with vital importance of backups, you must have different wallet backups, different methods used, and store your backups at different places too.

Brain and memory can be used but because memorization is a very dangerous backup method, it should only be used as a supporting back up method while you must back up your wallets with other safer methods as your main backups.

Different entropy means different security differences, the 12 seed phrase provides 128 bits of entropy and it is more than enough for security standards, till this day my crypto wallets are all 12 seed phrases.

The 24 seed phrase offers 256 bits of entropy, which means it doubles the security, but when it comes to someone trying to steal your seed they will do it the same way, which makes me feel like it is not that important to leave 128bits of entropy for 256 bits of entropy.

The 12 seed phrase  are just as secured as the 24 seed phrase for protection against recovery attacks, some hardware wallets like Trezor uses 24 seed phrase, not because they are more secured but because of implementation requirements.

I have a crypto wallet which is 12 seed phrase since 2018 and it works beautifully well, all you need to worry about is how you plan to keep the seed phrases safe. If you do it we'll nothing bad will happen.
