Why is it easier to accept losing when it takes hours?

When I put a single $100 bet on sports and it loses it's pretty painful.

But if I lose the same $100 on slots it doesn’t feel the same. maybe because it takes hours? you’re just spinning, getting tiny wins/losses, watching the balance go up and down. the money kind of fades away slowly instead of disappearing in one shot, and for some reason I accept it easier. Not even sure if this is just how my brain deals with slow losses, or if the whole entertainment value thing is fooling me into thinking I’m getting something out of it. (weirdy...)

It’s because you enjoy the game when you lose your 100$ on slots compared when you lose it on sports bet that you didn’t do anything and just wait. Maybe you should bet only on games that you like to watch since that’s the time you can appreciate sports betting rather than just wait for your bets to settle.

I do feel the same way when losing money on blackjack compared to slot games. It’s easier to accept losses on Blackjack since it gives me more action than slot games especially if the result on slots is always dead spin or dead bonus buy.

I feel the same way,

betting in sports takes a long time to watch and just to lose? its really sad specially when we lose with our favorite team.

In slots you dont mind the time, you are enjoying evey spin and happy when winning even small amount and we dont feel sad that much coz we manage to win some small amount though we see that our bank roll is getting smaller and at the end it turn out all gone.

The expectations you have in both scenarios are never the same, the adrenaline rush too differs, and the fact that for the other game you will mostly dedicate some time to selecting the games and making your picks, these makes your expectations increase and you just think of a win in any case because you believe you have been careful enough with your picks and nothing actually should go wrong, meanwhile with the instant picks and results with slot you already know you are just betting on luck, you don't expect much with the results and so possible outcomes becomes very easy to accept.  But waiting for long only to still loose the game can come off very disappointing and disheartening.

This is correct, we feel more pain when we lose big money at a go than when same is lost over a long period of time or after so many rounds in casino games and the reason is simple. Slot keeps you hopeful of a big win as you go even until the last spin before your money finishes, you still have hope that one big multiplier will cover all your losses. Besides, the losses in slot game does not happen consecutively, you will have a mixture of losses and small wins until the money finishes when the wins are small and cannot cover for the losses. It was strange, realizing that both lost $100, only time was the difference. The reason behind it's psychological, we can accept losing for a long time because we get something out of it, what I mean is entertainment. In sports betting, if we lose, we immediately lose our money, while in slots, maybe the initial spins we make don't make good payouts, but in the middle game, the slot machine gives happiness with big payouts, it provides a strong dopamine rush.

That is because while you took long playing slots, there were lots of emotions in between. There have been small losses which you were sad over, then came the small wins which made you forget the precious loss and the near wins which keeps your hope alive. By the time you end up losing everything, it would no longer hurt that much because you have already dealt with all the emotions and the loss now feels like you saw it coming.

It is just like death. Sudden death from accidents hurt more than death from a prolonged ailment. All the emotions have been felt already

I do not feel like this at all, if I spend $100 on betting and I lost everything on a single bet or if I spend the same amount of money on a casino game and I lost everything after I spend hours on the gambling site, the way I will feel is still the same. This is what happens, if you're playing sport bets and on a single slip, beit a single bet or parlay and you stake the entire $100 then looses, it will pain because you just missed out a winning opportunity you would have maximize by staking small amounts to active the number of attempts you could have given it, while in playing slots games.

Most of us may decide to use that $100 to play a multiple times and while at this, there could have been winning and losing periods altogether as part of the fun and experience in playing before finally blowing it up, which will not pain us like staking a straight/single game and loose at once, it sucks.

If i'm in a level of spending $100 as my gambling bankroll, I don't mind which way i lose it, as long i use it gambling on what i consider entertaining.

The effect of losing from sports betting can be easily accepted and processed, after the 90 minutes you already know whether you lose or win the bet.
