These tricks are used everywhere, not only in gambling or casinos, but also in supermarkets or large hypermarkets.
They do it to build your loyalty and not let you escape to the competition, that's the reason

It's not a trap when you know what you're looking for and the reward you get meet your expectation.

You could say it's a trap if the casino didn't clearly state the reward in their terms, but they will show the detail explanation after you reach the rank, well it's kind of misleading and I'm sure the gamblers won't be happy to see that.

Gamifying experience works in many areas, but in my opinion, it doesn't work in gambling. Gamifying gaming is stupid   This area is addictive without any additional features. It doesn't take long to know that the casinos are not helping you to win, it is against their code, all this is just a way to make you feel like the tiers will make you a better gambler and it worked damn well all the time, until later when you meet all the tiers and it still feels like you are playing a normal casino game.

Tiers makes sense only in bonus offers and free plays that comes with it, but the winning and losing ratio remains the same, it won't take long for anyone that think that tiers matters to get their answer, I would say leave them be and let them try, as for me I would rather rank my weapons up in a video game than the casino.

I also do not see how it is a trap, nobody is forcing anybody to gamble, and people should know that gambling is a means of losing money.
