If you can't afford to message someone regularly, send follow-up messages explaining why, especially if they keep messaging you how are you doing.

Consider this:
1. You ignored someone.
2. They ask you what's up.
3. You explain that you're a bit busy or something.
4. At least they see that you are interested in maintaining the contact. No tension.

Or this (absolute fucking worst shit ever):
1. You ignored someone.
2. They ask you what's up.
3. You ignored them again.
This keeps going. At some point:
1. You become too uncomfortable about reaching out back after weeks.
2. They start to hate you for playing silent. You start to hate them for being annoying.
In very extreme cases, you may get actually punched into face for this.

This is especially actual in this era of instant messaging. Some people who are too used to email (mostly late gen Y and X) believe that Telegram and WhatsApp don't notify when a message was read by your recipient, and think that it is safe to just ignore them. Unfortunately, most messengers notify whether your message was read or not, and for people used to messengers (most gen Z and Y), it looks like you are deliberately testing the limits of their patience.

Even if you are not an asshole, you surely do not want to accidentally look like one. Even stupid "sorry, busy" or "sorry, I feel uncomfortable to talk about it" communicate much more valuable information than stupid ohh guess what's up on my fucking mind behavior that will remind your recipient of their ex girlfriend.
