Why gambling can not be seen as entertainment

I think we all have different views or perspectives on gambling. For me, I see it as entertainment, but I also see it more as an opportunity to make some bucks. I know I shouldn’t think that way because it will only lead to expectations, which can turn into addiction, but I can’t help it, that’s how I see gambling. It’s only fun for me when I win. Video games are different, maybe because we don’t expect anything in return and just purely enjoy them.

People have different thoughts about whether gambling is entertaining or not, but for me, it depends on how you treat the casino.
I guess poor people who seek to win huge amounts are the ones who end up broke, regretful, etc.... unlike rich people who do only gamble for entertainment.

first you need to look at how you personally view gambling. are you playing it just for fun or have you chosen gambling as a profession. in the beginning people may gamble for fun but slowly they become addicted to it. two days ago my friend started gambling by spending 20 dollars even though he had never gambled before. he went to a gambling site and started playing and on the very first day he made a profit of 200 dollars. yesterday he told me friend i want to play again do you think it will be okay. today he played again and lost all the money he had made as profit. he wanted to continue playing again but i told him no and warned him that if he keeps doing this he will become addicted. in reality addiction is created from the tendency to recover losses. when you win every day gambling feels like just fun but when you start losing that fun disappears. and if someone becomes addicted to gambling then even if they want to it will not be easy for them to get out of it.

Though most of gamblers might not admit but being irresponsible leads them not to enjoy but to regret but some wise gamer can practice discipline and good control with their emotions, and the results is they'll enjoy and have that luxury to keep doing things with set limitations, just like what the other said, we do have different views and opinions regarding to how we treat gambling though vast majority aim to win and regret after.

Even though some of them end up losing, they still laugh together and joke about the losses afterward. The definition of gambling that you mentioned is only a general one. A gambler never considers himself addicted to gambling, just as a person who drinks every day does not consider himself an alcoholic.
As long as gambling is a hobby, unless those around you call you a gambler, if someone is able to cover all their living expenses and their family's expenses and has savings for themselves and gambles with a small amount, then it can be said that they gamble for fun. You are the one that makes your gambling activities that way, you made gambling not to be seen as entertainment because you have decided to gamble for money and not for the fun it has, like you said entertainment is supposed to end with laughter, yes that is how gambling is, you are not suppose to take it personal to yourself to the extent of having pains or problems to yourself, when you see it as fun it becomes fun and nothing more.

As a gambler, if you are so desperate to make money from gambling, then you going to be gambling irresponsibly, which you going to end up regretting in the long run. If you gamble responsibly, then you going to be cautious with any risk which you taking, you will be taking low risk, and if you do that, then you going to have peace of mind when gambling. But if you gamble with high amount of money, you just going to be frustrated at the end, because you won’t have peace when gambling.

Most people that are confident that they can make money from gambling are he ones that do regret at the end, because if you are so desperate, you going to be losing more than the way you will be winning, because you going to be desperate and emotional.

If we are to go by the definition you quoted, I will say gambling is halfway an entertainment because those who win while playing enjoy the moment and it excites them; there is nothing different between such a type of entertainment and the one Oxford defined. Ironically, it is easier than people think, to take gambling as a source of entertainment instead of a source of money. One just needs to see gambling and casinos as something similar to going to one's favorite cinema or any other event in which one is required to pay to enter, the money is pretty much lost when one's pays one's entry.
The entry for gamblers is their deposit and what we are supposed to get in return is the chance to get thrill and adrenaline from games where actual money is at stake.

I have never honestly met anyone who has gotten to make a living off gambling or betting on sports.

To be frank with you the definition of gambling differs, everybody has their own definition for gambling. Gambling to some person's is a game for fun and for entertainment only if they winning, because you can't expect someone who losing while gambling to proudly say that he or she is having fun or entertaining his or herself capital NO. And as far as am concerned gambling can only be fun and, entertaining when you are winning and not losing.
And to answer your question OP, for me I don't really picture gambling as game for fun and entertainment, I see it as a game of chance so there is no fun or entertainment there. Although I don't know how other users here picture gambling, but how ever they see gambling is their business not my. But they should always gamble with the amount they can afford to loose just an advice.

Realistically speaking, gambling for me is more of a source of an income rather than an entertainment. And once I made some profits, that's when I get totally entertained.

However, there are really some occasional gamblers who are just having fun when they gamble, rest assured they are only betting on their budget or their extra money to be exact. So its safe to say that gambling for them is just for entertainment purposes.

But for majority of us, especially the long time  gamblers, we don't just gamble, but we gamble to earn and make more money. And that's when we get totally entertained.

I believe it can be seen as entertainment; if gambling isn't your priority but rather a hobby, we can say you're having fun. I know there will be people who say that gambling isn't a hobby, but everyone spends their time and money however they want. Some people prefer to spend it on other things. It stops being fun when you lose control of yourself and start acting against your well-being and that of those close to you.
