If I should understand you clearly, you are talking about someone saving money under any company control and about someone being in control of this money. As far as it is cryptocurrency someone has and wants to be their own bank, it is really not that hard. All it needs is providing proper security to the wallet by choosing the best wallet that is well secured, and always trying to stay informed about the latest tactics that scammers may bring. So it is not that hard to become our own bank, but people are just lazy and don’t want to learn how to be their own bank. I can't agree more with you, as we are surely taking a lot of responsibilities this way and there is no insurance or refund here unless we are holding our funds in centralized exchanges because sometimes when they lost it we can get all or some of it back but when we are holding our funds in non custodial wallets we are the maintainers, manager, security team.

But don't forget one thing that even if we managed to maintain everything in a wallet like chose a good one, and kept it separate from malicious sites, devices and transactions that can empty the wallet, we still have to remain careful while making transactions because the easies way to lose money to scammers is address poinioing, you might have heard the news about how some person lost $50 million of usdt by sending them to an address which he copied from his transaction history but he did not knew only the first and last letters were same as his real wallet while the remaning characters are different and he lost the funds to scamers.

Who is responsible now even he was using Binance but here the mistake was his, not of the centralized exchange so no refund and no insurance, his fault and he lost $50 million. The point is we have to be careful all the time, even if we have made a transaction of $5 dollar few months ago and signed a transaction or signature but we did not knew the wallet was vulnerable to scammers due to that as we signed malicious signature that caused an access to our wallet and we deposited money, that was withdrew by the scammers easily and cause a lose of $300k, this is also a real case occured few weeks ago.

Yes, a lot of people don’t pay attention to the most important things, which are the private keys and seed phrases. Most often, they forget them or click on suspicious links and fall for scams where they are asked to provide their seed phrase. With banks, it’s the opposite , your money is there, and it’s not only under your control but also under the bank’s control. I don't like banks, they really are making money out of us, while if we get our money and leave little they will get fee's monthly, they will use our money to lend other people money and gets a lot of interest while giving us small ones, closing our banks when we don't put money monthly or a certain time.
While using crypto gives us power over our money what we want to do, while the protection is on us, keeping our keys or seed phrase is our responsibility, and what i like about it is the interest are bigger and there is no fee's for storing it, only fee's for transfer which is normal and small.

It really just means: don't trust the banks to store your money and don't trust fiat and central banks not to debase it significantly over time.

It is nothing different, after creating a bank account, even if the security is mostly controlled by the bank, you are given bank verification numbers and account pin which is like giving your seed phrase or private keys to store private. Having to do with banks still makes you bank to yourself since you must secure those numbers given to you.

Bitcoin allows you to be your bank and it is a simple procedure, only that most people are careless or don't care for the knowledge, threads are all over, anyone who digs to find the right security tips will get the knowledge.
