I would recommend the Avalon Q if you are going to be home mining.  It is the best 110v miner I have come across.  Costs around $1,800 and depending on your electricity rate will most likely disappoint you if your expectations aren't in line with reality.

As far as stuff you can do on your laptop...  Probably nothing if we are being honest.  If you have a PC at home with a GPU then you can probably solo mine Ravencoin (I'm doing this) but again, you're talking about $20 a month.  Not exactly going to make you rich.  Mining is a pretty established industry at this point.  You're competing with people that have 15 years of experience and have moved their lives to cold areas with cheap electricity to maximize potential.  Make sure your expectations are reasonable.

$20 dollars is at least somewhere to start. Could give something to build off of and start saving for bigger things like mining equipment like usbs or even investing in the stock market.

I don't think you can buy an ASIC unit or even an ASIC USB miner like the Compac F. for $20 usually usb miners is around $100+ 2nd hand used.

But if you still insist check the Nerdminer or Lucky Miner, you can only use it for study purposes or for the lottery. Just take note: if you are going to use it for the lottery, your chances are very slim because these miners have tiny hashrates.

It also must be noted that the NerdMiner & LuckyMiner are for 'study' purposes. They are so slow most pools will not accept them. Pools below built only for NerdMiner and other sub-GH/s miners:

Same goes for basic NerdMiner (the LuckyMiner is a copy of it, same ESP 32 cpu) . One of the sites I listed shows >80k NerdMiners connected giving an aggregate total of just over 10.3GH/s....
