We all gamble here, that’s obvious. But outside this forum, when people around you casually call you a “gambler”, how do you actually take it?

Do you feel proud and see it as some kind of compliment, like someone who takes risks and knows what they’re doing. Or do you feel a bit insulted, like it’s something negative and not really something to be proud of?

Curious how others see it, especially since gambling means different things to different people.
The context will determine the reaction to it. That is why context matters a lot.
However I don’t wish to be called a gambler- personally it means I do it too much and people around me have known me with it. If I gamble let it be that someone identifies me because of the game that I play the most which is slot. If you call me a slot lover, I’ll be happier than if you call me a gambler. Again, context matters.

I believe that it is more about how and why it was said by somebody. With such a neutral conversation as this forum, gambler is simply a term that defines one who is a participant - no more. However, in reality, it has a negative connotation such as a reckless person, or an addicted person and this is the reason why many people do not like it. I regard gambling as a doing, rather than a being. When you play with control and limits it is entertainment and not a character trait. So I would not accept it as a compliment or an insult per se the meaning and the context of the word is what actually determines the way it is supposed to be.

There is a negative perception of the player in society as a whole. This is not an insult, but rather a certain contempt (indiscriminately all players are considered addicted). Therefore, those who gamble or bet on sports usually do not tell others about it (they share it only in a narrow circle of friends). Because such a person will either be silently condemned or hated and considered a cheat if he is successful in winning. And especially if he's dumb enough to brag about it in front of others.

I would consider it an insult because I see no reason while some will call me a gambler. Gambling isn't a profession if someone wants to address me they should plainly as me what profession am into and not to call me a gambler. So it is embarrassing am not a compliment especially the mindset behind it. The person maybe doing this just to let someone down in public. When someone openly called you gambler the first thing that will ring in people's mind is gambling addiction.

It depends on who and what tone they use to say it.

I don't have anything to be worried when someone addresses me as a gambler but I am a husband, father too so a random girl can't call me as husband or father, right? Cheesy

Or if they are trying to make fun of me then I will give the appropriate reply with the same tone.
I agree with you, it depends on the tone of voice, I can imagine that. Being called a gambler depends on the tone of voice, and if we don't feel addicted, there's no need to be offended. Personally, if a friend calls me a gambler, I accept it because I enjoy doing it. Even so, I won't be offended because there are no negative consequences from my gambling since everything is under control. And yes, if the tone is mocking or teasing, as you mentioned, then it's okay to object because the tone is excessive.

If someone called me a "gambler" I probably wouldn't care, but I do understand that the term "gambler" carries negative connotation. Why do you think, that somebody calling you gambler would be a compliment? Nobody has ever told me that being a gambler is something honorary and something to be proud of. Most people hate taking risks and most people love safety and predictability. Also many people do understand that gambling has negative expected value and the more you play, the more you lose, which makes gambling kinda stupid in the eyes of the people, who aren't gamblers.

The general perception about gambling in some areas is that gambling is a destructive game. You would easily hear parents advising their children to avoid it. Few years ago, parents usually come to physical betting houses to force their children out of that environment. I don't blame theme for this actions because some gamblers a abusing gambling.

With the popularity of online gambling, physical betting shops are now experiencing less patronage. Keeping your gambling activities secret is now very easy. All you need to do is to use online casinos and also avoid doing it in public places. Only my partner knows that I gamble because even close relatives could misunderstand it.

Curious how others see it, especially since gambling means different things to different people.
Gambling activities are not widely accepted in my area. Most religous organisation prohibts its members from active gambling. Since many people in my country are religious, it wouldn't be nice to be publicly known as a gambler. These people would have a wrong perception about you, which might cause an unhealthy relationship.

Online gambling has been my best avenue to place bets. It shields me from the negative public perception that going to a physical casino brings. It would be better to keep my gambling activites private because of the environment one finds thierself. So I wouldnt want to be publicly called a gambler.

That's exactly what I mean, in some areas the gambler on the religious side is seen as evil.
The fine line of reasoning they make, however, is only one: that when someone gambler is humiliatingly told, they mean exactly that they are a soul lost in addiction; they don't actually mean to offend with a different meaning.
For those outside this world, the gambler is the same as a drug addict, in some cases he truly is, but this cannot be said universally to all gamblers.
A tip? Avoid talking about it out of context (only if you're looking for help getting out of addiction), but if you don't have gambling addiction problems, keep everything to yourself.

I can associate myself with maintaining secrecy of my gambling. In the real life a label of a gambler is usually used with negative connotations and I can see why the label may be considered a negative thing by many. The majority of humanity likes to be safe and predictable and thus risk-taking is not often applauded by other people other than gamblers. I have never considered it a compliment either, because gambling generally has a negative expected value i.e. the more one gambles, the higher the chance he is going to lose. Nevertheless, even in such a community, it can be a dispassionate or even humorous word among friends, but beyond it can hardly be considered honorary.

It depends on the perspective of the person judging. I would be offended if someone suddenly called me a gambler, even if they meant it as a joke and I knew them. What offends me here is that they didn't put things in their proper place.
I have nothing to be proud of here with my status as a gambler, especially since gambling can be viewed as a bad thing in certain circles.
On the other hand, I prefer that everything I do not be exposed to people or my social circle. Everything, including my job. If I ever become a government official, I won't be able to hide it. Lol

Everything will depends on the set up, since if the person telling that is not sensitive enough on the words he used and tell some offensive word in public. Then I would provably get offended with those people saying that with malicious tone

But if they do it privately and just teasing me, well with that set up I will not get insult because. We can also joke around and try to lighten up the mode of each other. If people don't want to get unnecessary comments to other people, especially to those person they don't like much better if they keep all their gambling participations and other activities secret. Because after all we don't need to brag to anyone regarding on what we are currently doing.

Ordinaryly people has this perception of seeing gambler's as an irresponsible people, they actually don't speak good of then because perhaps they have been labelled and seen as people with little or no brighter future ahead. So calling someone a gambler in public is something that looks more of an insult to the surposed person and probably wouldn't be torelated at all, even if someone is a gambler their is no point dragging him in public or naming him gamble itself, is bad and it shows a sign of insult and disrespect to the person being called.

To me I wouldn't accept it, possible you know my real name so why addressing me as a gambler in public perhaps your intentions to me wasn't genuine, you just trying to talk less of me or makes me an object of mockery and I wouldn't take it.

I don't want to be called a gambler in the offline world, in my country it is nothing but an insult for someone to call you a gambler because it is known that been a gambler means that you are a irresponsible person.

Online gambling brings secrecy with gambling in peace, no one would know that you are gambling unless you tell people yourself, the mentality of people with gambling is someone who can't work for money but seek for easy ways to make money.

It's why I don't even want to visit any local gambling dens where passerby would noticed my presence and they will start spreading rumours, I have seen this played out in the lives of some people that I knew, and no one want to accept that conditions is why they turned gambler all of a sudden.

I never really thought about it. It just wasn't necessary. I've been called much worse names. "Gambler," they called me, "addict." So what? Did it help me? No, it didn't. Until I decided to change my life, nothing happened, and I needed help. In the end, I turned to family and friends, who provided the support I needed. And all that stuff about nicknames is kind of beside the point. The main thing is to be a good person.

To be honestly speaking in these aspect of a gambler should be called a gambler, if it can be seen as an compliment or insult, from the angle i view it from when a gambler is being noticable within the environment or society and the addiction of such gambler is nothing good to be speakable were he joined gambling and alcoholic drinks together, so once they call such a gambler in that situation it is an insult not a compliment but a proud gambler can be complimented if such a gambler is not so addicted to gambling and do not make his source of income in gambling, so in these case if a gambler is called a gambler, the compliment or insult is based or depends on how the gambler shows himself within the society.

Curious how others see it, especially since gambling means different things to different people.

People's attitude towards the players will be the same. If a person does not experience gambling addiction, does not annoy someone with his hobby, but spends his money wisely, then who can condemn him? In turn, people will have a negative opinion about a person who, besides himself, also spoils the lives of others, having a lot of debts that he gets by gambling uncontrollably. There is nothing wrong with gambling; if you play with a sense of proportion, everything else will be condemned.

Calling a gambler is a kind of insult. Especially for those who follow Islam, being called a gambler will feel insulted because gambling is not permissible in Islam, it is completely illegal and if this illegal thing is called with the name of a person or in memory of a person, then it is a kind of insult. Actually, I gamble only for entertainment. I gamble. Many people do not know about my gambling. Since I gamble online on my mobile phone, people do not know about my gambling and people do not call me a gambler. If they did, I would definitely be insulted.

I would only feel insulted if I don't have enough money to sustain my living expenses, but still manage to gamble or be recognized as a gambler.
But if I have enough I would take that as a compliment, since it means that I have enough to live comfortably and spend on things that I enjoy.
And also gambling is normal in our country so being called gambler isn't really a big deal here.
