I am from a country in which the majority of the population is not covered by health insurance or any insurance at all. All of it because of the lack of money and financial stability, that is why there are millions here in Venezuela who resort to self-medication when there suffer from some sickness or illness, also it is well known that here in Venezuela who can get a lot of drugs without having to present a receipt from a doctor in order to get pills like anti-depressants, pain killers or even pills which are supposed to be used to help with sleep problems, like insomnia.
It is either self-medication or suffering those those sicknesses indefinitely, many of us prefer the former option, whether doctors like it or not.
Also, the use of artificial intelligences to identify symtomps and help a little bit of accurate information on what to take and how to take it has helped a lot of people in developing countries where health has become a luxury instead of a right.
I don’t really know much about what’s happening in your country, but all I can assure you that not only is that happening in your country, even my country too majority of people are not covered by any health insurance, maybe just few.
I also agree that the unavailability of funds, contribute to self medication. Most persons when sick, with lack of funds to go to a proper health care or a hospital to see a doctor for consultation and other proper health checkup, they just easily do self medication or also use Ai to get prescription of medication through the symptoms which will be a lot cheaper for them than going to the hospital and which I believe if they were under any health insurance, such things will be avoided.
But nevertheless, I still believe there are cheaper hospitals also or clinics, because self medication will only cause you to keep spending and spending on medications because you might not be getting the proper right medication for that illness and it keeps coming back but with consultation and prescription from a doctor it can be treated once and for all.
That's to say bad government also contributes to self medication cause if the government fail to provide health centers with free or fair amount for medicals where the poor people can go for medication then they'll be forced to turn to self medication to get well when they're ill, many poor people in third world countries suffer lots from situations like that.
However any reason for self medication, it's never a good thing cause sometimes the person might not know the right prescription and might get overdosed then worsen their situation, which is why a doctors advise is always advisable to the right prescription can be given for treatment of any illness or so.
