What happens if your old Bitcoin wallet got abandoned? This is not my issue, I am asking on behalf of someone closer to me, he said there was a time in 2020 where he had some Bitcoin in a wallet called Copay, I have never heard of this wallet before.
He claimed to have left some amount of Bitcoin on that wallet but now he can't find the app again because he have long lost his phone with the wallet but he still have it's recovery seed.
The reason why he kept quiet about it all this while is because of the amount, it's not that big, he is guessing around 0.0005 or 0.005 that's why he is not even moved to look into a solution.
I tried looking for copay too but it seems like they are out of business.
Any solution will be appreciated.

Maybe someone could correct me if I'm wrong here, but as far as I know the wallet uses bip39 for generating the seedphrase, meaning it should not be difficult to recover this on Electrum. Or you could simply use Bitpay wallet as explained in their github repository: https://github.com/bitpay/copay

Did your friend refer to this wallet, https://copaywallet.io formerly known as CopayBTC? It seems to be open-source. I wouldn't say it's quite safe until I find any comprehensive reviews. Perhaps seeing the logo might remind your friend of something. Please DWYOR. I agree with Omega's suggestion; recovering using Electrum should work.

You are right, any bip39 mnemonic compatible wallet will work, I have used Copay in the past as well and the recovery seed works in Bitpay wallet, they work in similar manner. Download Bitpay Go to add wallet and import wallet This should work on every Bitcoin wallets that supports bip39 like Electrum, Blue wallet even Trust wallet, which I don't recommend anyway but just listing wallets that are bip39 compatible.

If there is recovery seeds then you can always recover the wallet in any compatible wallet. As said above use Electrum for Bip39 seeds. I hope your friend still have the seeds and in order, missing them our or not in order will lead to further issues.

Copay Bitcoin wallet is from BitPay. https://walletscrutiny.com/iphone/com.bitpay.copay/It is close source but if your friend still have the wallet backup, he can try to recover that wallet. Telling your friend to try wallet recovery with The FinderOuter, a bitcoin recovery tool.Do it offline.

I believe the friend is not serious about recovering the wallet and the OP has said that, for me if the OP friend was serious about it finding the wallet won't be too difficult especially when they already have a reference which is the Copay BTC. They can just use the name to search as keywords and before now they would have already made advanced ground in finding the wallet. If the recovery phrase is available then it can be found but since their is no much seriousness nothing will be done.

Yes, Copay was abandoned around the year 2022 and never had an update. You can simply recover it by using electrum wallet and make sure it's the same type of address to use a correct derivation path. As suggested above was right, I think there's a tutorial in Youtube which I remember from before. Anyway, you guys might experience what OP said if you didn't know which Bitcoin wallet has been abandoned, and here's a thread about that. Dead/Abandonet wallets.

Importing a wallet seed phrase into Electrum with choosing BIP39 or don't choosing it while OP will need to tick on BIP39 after typing all seed phrase. How to import my Bitcoin wallet into Electrum. A guide to do this from Exodus wallet can help OP's friend, but I don't shill Exodus wallet which is not a good wallet. It's just their guide in this case is helpful. Or OP can tell his friend to follow this guide. Restoring your standard wallet from seed with Electrum.

Be careful on recovering your wallet or your friends wallet online. If you are going to try most of the suggestions above, I suggest choose the Electrum method instead and do it offline.
Does your friend still know the BTC address? Because you can easily spot them once you imported the wallet to Electrum wallet. Or if doesn't know the exact address, then once you imported the seed to Electrum wallet, it will show some BTC address on addresses tab. Check them one by one and find the one with a balance.
If your friend can't find the address with a balance, try changing the derivation path to m/44'/0'/0'/0 * that is what is suggested from their GitHub. Then check the addresses again if it has a balance.
Once your friend finds the address with the balance, he can make an offline transaction for safety purposes when sending the BTC to another wallet or exchange.

No it won't. They have an option to select BIP 39 when importing. The only difference is that electrum default isn't really BIP 39.

Few years ago if you launch Copay they will have an advert like about Bitpay in between, it's like they are in some partnership with eachother, I am pretty sure that they work with eachother by default, the bip39 will give you the exact balance of your Copay if you insert the seed into Bitpay.

Or you could simply use Bitpay wallet as explained in their github repository: https://github.com/bitpay/copayYep, it went from copay wallet to bitpay wallet to bitpay app to bitpay app v2 All done by BitPay. But as others have said it used a standard BIP 39 Keep in mind there was a supply chain attack against them 7 years ago. So depending on when the OPs friend got the coins they may or may not still be there https://www.kaspersky.com/blog/copay-supply-chain-attack/24786/-Dave
