Sure all addiction has the ability to ruin peoples lives, there's no argument about that, but what OP is saying here is that gambling has a higher percentage of ruining lives than other forms of abuses that comes from either drugs, alcohol and possibly the food you are making reference to. And the OP is right, because lately I have read and seen more videos of people that are committing suicide because of gambling recklessness, than drug abuse and others.
There are some addictions that won't ruin your life, such as addiction to studying or working, and other positive things.
However, this term tends to be negative, and addiction can be considered excessive behavior. Even good things, if done excessively, can have negative consequences.
It's not surprising, in my opinion, that more people are addicted to gambling than to drugs, as online gambling is very popular, and the low minimum bets make it accessible to many.
