The amount is huge, I don't think any ordinary person would want to play around with that fee to make a sensation in the industry. So, the possible reason behind this is all user error. I checked the hash, but couldn't find a single transaction that make such a large fee. The transaction occurred in block 24433988 & Ether.fi got the block reward.
Not even the richest guy would do this with a clear eye, the amount is too huge to play around with and not especially for someone who is in crypto to make profit because that's what every individual is in for. The transaction fee must have being processed by mistake.

Quote
Well, if it was a mistake, I hope Ether.fi want to refund the fee.
Maybe it's just me, but I haven't known of any return of a transaction fee. Or has there being any, even from other network as a result of an erroneous excessive fees?

The person that anticipate in this task not know how to read? Because it definitely going to be indicated before one can complete transactions in Crypto.
The doer ot that transaction is the cause of that mistake and should be punished for not reading through transactions before hitting the send button, I've spent $16 on Bitcoin fee before when ignore reading through before sending, it got me pissed off that day and I went cold and frustrated. From then I always check my transaction fee before sending.

I think this incidence will teach the sender a lesson to always check any transaction fee on any chain before sending, will literally help him a lot.

Most times too, Ethereum and Bitcoin and other chain based coins rises in fee due to network congestion, it does happen but sender be careful when on fee before sending.

It's February 11th 2026 and someone decide to use this much Eth to settle gas ⛽ fee.
Is this a mistake from their end or something else played out?

Is there a lesson or two that we can learn from this? I don't know much about it either so I think it's better if I bring this on here for lesson purposes, someone should please shed lights on this for us all? Thanks
Without sharing the link to the original news there's no way we can tell if this amount was mistakenly settlement for gas fees or a whale wanting to burn some Ethereum to make it more scarce, people often send coins to death address just as a way to burn the coin, so whenever you see this kind of transactions is not often a mistake but deliberately done, between please share the link to the news sharing just an image make the whole story unclear to us

This probably isn't the first time this has happened, with such a high fee. Is there an error?

Judging from https://etherscan.io/gastracker, the normal rate is currently around 0.061 gwei. Even if it does rise, it shouldn't be that high. The fee even dropped this low a week ago.
If this is an error, then checking and rechecking before doing or executing anything is crucial to be more cautious. Or, better yet, just try again next time if the fee seems unreasonable.

Most times too, Ethereum and Bitcoin and other chain based coins rises in fee due to network congestion, it does happen but sender be careful when on fee before sending.
Indeed, when a mistake is made alone, we can no longer do anything, only regret, and become a lesson for the future. However, this is a very large amount for me, I'm sure, the regret will really cause stress. And you're right, everything must be considered carefully before doing any transaction, whether it is anything, whether sending ETH, or other coins, whether in certain wallets, or other platforms such as exchanges. Also pay attention to the network used, wallets, amounts, fees, and so on, so that everything is more controlled and safe according to our awareness and knowledge.

Probably a rookie mistake by someone who didn't double-check current network fees. I mean, anyone can set fees manually on their wallet to prevent overpaying. Going to Etherscan's Gas Tracker and inputting the gas fees in GWEI by yourself, would be the way to go. Anything higher than double-digits per ETH transaction is insane.

I have read of a similar case on the Bitcoin blockchain. Developers should let wallets alert a user when paying such exorbitant fees. Only then, mistakes will be avoided. Validators (stakers) will be "swimming" in money with this rookie mistake. Let's hope this doesn't happen again in the future.

This is not the first time it has happened, and it also happens on Bitcoin. Usually, it's human error, because if it were a system error, so many holders would be affected.
You did not provide an article for us to check what really happened, when it happened, and the circumstances under which it happen, this mistake makes us more aware when doing transactions.

This is obviously a mistake in my own opinion, but ignorance is another thing that may compel a user to do such , because no knowledgeable and informed person will know that this particular transaction fee is that high and decides to go ahead, so it's either he did the transaction in a hurry without paying attention to details or he saw it quite alright, but is ignorant of what it entails, so since the deed has already been done, it's better we all learn from this because something like this is very much possible in Bitcoin network, not just in Eth.
