Employers want to be impressed by asking you one thing: sell me this pen.

How do we sell a pen?

1. Purpose.
What’s the purpose of the pen? Will it be useful for you? When or where can you use it? Do you really need it? Can you pass down this pen for your kids to use?

2. Prestige or Status
Who are the users of this pen? Are they esteemed people? Highly regarded people? Will you also be considered as one of them if you buy this pen?

3. Premium Quality
Does the price reflect the actual quality of the product? It serves the basic purpose but what are the additives? How does it differ from others?

Now replace pen with any other product and it’s still pretty much the same. How will you market a pen?

For sure, marketing a pen is about making the person feel they need it. I watched a movie one time where there was a demonstration about how to sell a pen to a client, though I can’t remember the name of the movie. The idea is simple. First, I would ask them to lend me a pen in a very urgent manner. That situation would make them realize how important it is to always have a pen nearby. It creates an emotional reason for them to see the value of a pen, especially for quick signatures or note taking in important moments.

Quality doesn't have a significant impact on some products or services. It depends on what you're marketing, whether quality is a key standard or not. However, if it's just a product that doesn't prioritize quality, we can rely on marketing techniques to attract more customers and accelerate profits. Good marketing can certainly create FOMO and also attract people to the marketing approach. Quality is a form of long-term sustainability, which is also very important in a product. Besides attracting people through marketing as an initial introduction, we also need to focus on long-term consumers, making them think our product is worthy.
The market has a different control over the marketer, some suffer waste and leakages while trying to market a product, while others who understand how the market work could out of little budget hit strong leads to their products. Quality is a powerful factor in marketing which helps with productocracy, the art of selling itself, instead of paying high on marketing. In a nutshell, marketing works best with sustainability, and powerful written and spoken communication.

Now replace pen with any other product and it’s still pretty much the same. How will you market a pen?
To me selling does not mean convincing someone by force but rather talking in a way that makes them understand how useful the thing will be in their life. When people feel their own need, they no longer need to be convinced separately. Then the product is not just a product, it becomes a solution to their daily life, I believe that if something really adds value to someone's work then there is no need to put extra pressure on it to sell it, people come towards it on their own.
Well, the most important art in selling that's often overlooked is building rapport. You might notice you end up going to places the most where people have built a rapport with you over time, whether it's your barber, vegetable shop, or literally anything.

That's because we love living in our comfort zone and someone who goes well along with us helps us stay in that zone. This is why when we meet someone new we are almost always going to avoid dealing with them. But over time, a relation is built and we trust the person.

The problem with 'sell me this pen' is that the person has no prior relation and obviously, the person challenging to sell the pen is acting tough. In real-world sales, it's almost always good to talk about something that's of interest to the buyer and then sell.

I don't remember where I heard or read this but it stuck to my mind - Marketing is about telling a story.

It's so true when you think about the brands and products around us. Almost every genius brand has a good story around which they campaign and place their ads. When we think of a brand, usually we visualize something about it, and that is exactly the story behind it.

For instance, Coke would never build its brand around health because it won't work, so they run ads and campaigns around thrill/achievement sentiment because one feels charged up after drinking Coke. The same goes for Red Bull, you think about speed and energy when you think of the brand.

Selling a pen is a good example, we all watched the movie The Wolf of Wall Street. But it's really not that simple. It is necessary not to learn the rules of marketing, but to have such a nature from early childhood. It is desirable that parents be very cunning and resourceful, so that they want to benefit from anything, even by finding things from resale sites and selling them more expensive to anyone who can be at least a little like a buyer.
I believe that this is an innate temperament trait and not a skill developed after a course or books.

My very simple question is how long will this marketers last marketing substandard products? Most major sales any marketer does is mostly based on referrals. If I buy a product and the standard doesn't meet my expectations obviously I will never trust that product ever again and I won't imagine myself recommending that product to anyone. One thing marketers and producers should understand is that quality matters. One satisfied customer is a potential Brand Advocate and those kind of ambassadors who the company doesn't know most times pull up the best sales through recommendation.

Yeah, that’s the point really. Marketing can push a weak product for a while, especially with hype, but it doesn’t last long once real users start sharing their experience.

People talk, reviews spread, and referrals disappear quickly if the quality isn’t there, and in the end a decent product almost markets itself, while a bad one just burns trust and the brand dies slowly.

This is where product quality and honesty are needed.

Those are two different things, but essentially marketing is the key to a product's success and quality is something that must be considered because it will also fail if the two are not aligned. For example, if marketing is good but the quality is poor, of course the product will not be able to develop in the market. However, indeed both must be carried out simultaneously, and I believe that any product, even one with good quality, still requires continuous marketing in order not to lose out to its competitors.
