If you're comfortable literally throwing 40% of your monthly salary, you wantonly spend it, and you don't care about your future, no one is secure in their job. They may be good at their job, but they'll know if they're out of a job because of retrenchment, so spending 40% is an addiction for me you'e literally working just to gamble.
10% is already high for me, I cannot imagine myself spending 40% to gambling, it's hard to earn a living here in our country only to waste it in gambling.

I want to know if it was you what would you do to him, and how much do you think he should be allocating to gamble every week or month? Let discusse, know that there are lot of addiction thread so we should try as much as possible not to make a repetitive comment.

It will be difficult to explain to people who are not aware of the importance of managing finances. They will continue the habits they have long practiced. Asking them to reduce their allocation will also have no effect if they do not have self-awareness. All they think about is today, without caring about tomorrow and the future.
As for the percentage of the gambling budget, some say 10% or less of income. But it all also depends on each person's needs and financial plans.

To be honest, anyone who is using 40% of their salary to gamble is an addicted gambler. How can someone gamble with 40% of their salary? Does the person not have anything else to do apart from gambling? In fact, if someone spends 40% of their salary on gambling, how much will be left for their needs? That means the person may not be taking good care of ifself. As for me, I allocate 5% to 10% of my income to gambling, but it always depends on the situation. Not every month do I even make a deposit for gambling. If things are tight for me, I skip some months, especially if I have other necessary expenses to take care of.

The point is that gambling is not a way of making money, and it is not a do or die activity. Even when someone gambles, it is still a waste of money because winning depends on luck. Normally, if we think about money that should be spent on gambling, it should not even be allocated from our salary, but rather a small percentage from our discretionary funds the money left over after our essential needs have been taken care of. So, the leftover money is where we can allocate 5% or 10% for gambling.

What we can afford to gamble is not the same with each other, or Gambler should know this and be able to stand on their own without looking towards other gamblers direction on what they use as stake in playing their own bet, we should stop being intimidated or comparing ourselves to other gamblers, things like this easily made us to go into what we shouldn't at the end because they are not going to help us by any chance, our stake should be what we can afford to lose.

Spending 40% on gambling is clearly the behavior of an addicted gambler, and he doesn't hesitate to increase the amount when the 40% is gone. that's truly insane, and I'm sure he has either once or even frequently spent his entire paycheck on gambling. Additionally, I'm certain that such a gambler must have debt issues, whether it's for gambling expenses or to cover living costs before receiving the next month's paycheck.

As you mentioned, OP, that he is aware of what he is doing but appears relaxed, I am certain that the reason is because he is still obsessed with gambling, particularly winning. His hopes are far greater than his fear of the impending disaster. For me, there is nothing better than gambling with only 5% of one's monthly salary.

As a family man, I can't afford to spend 40% of my monthly income, like the friend mentioned by the OP, let alone spend more if that money runs out. Everyone spends what they can afford, so there's no set amount; what's unacceptable is spending more than you have. Some weeks I gamble more and others less; I have a fixed budget, usually $25 a week, but sometimes I can allocate a little more money for it.

Some one who spends 40% of his monthly earnings on gambling should be able to show you what he has established from the money he made from gambling otherwise the person is insane for wasting his time, energy and money on what is not being beneficial to him.

I do not keep track of my gambling activities but if I realized that I have given my 20% monthly earnings to gambling that means they have given me ×5 of that my 20% before taking that bold steps.

Who gambles with their entire savings?
Sincerely I wouldn't mind saying that your friend is insane for gambling with his 40 percent of salary earned. Like I don't understand why he should be using that amount to gamble, or do I say he doesn't have a family responsibility? What to care off or even married and have kids?
Because I believe anyone who have kids or family responsibility would never think of using about his 40% percent salary to gambling knowing too well that he has some needs at home to attend to?

Had discussion with friends over the weekend and one of them said he do allocates about 40 percent of his monthly salary to gambling within the month, and when that amount finishes he wouldn't mind refilling it again, provided that he is catching the cruise and having fun he doesn't mind any amount he is spending to gamble.
To me: I just quietly breathe down, and looked at him a kind of annoying looks like, if he truly knows what he is saying. I told him that such amount is too huge to allocate for his gambling, I asked? How much do you saved per month and how much do you spend or for your up keep? He said " he barely saved up money" that he do spend out before the month ends. This made me to understand that he is actually addicted but he seems not to noticed yet and even when I tried to draw him closer to know that he is already an addicted gambler he said he knows what he is doing.

I want to know if it was you what would you do to him, and how much do you think he should be allocating to gamble every week or month? Let discusse, know that there are lot of addiction thread so we should try as much as possible not to make a repetitive comment.

It's not easy to convince someone to seek medical help for tests and to find out about their health status. Only a doctor can tell you if they are addicted or not, and in these cases the best thing you should do is inform their relatives or spouse (if they are married) so that they pay attention to their gambling activities and that the relatives don't say that you were the one who reported this situation.

If he finds out and gets angry with you, it doesn't matter. At least you tried to save him and his life. One day he will realize that. Now, don't be the kind of person who stays silent because you want to stay on good terms with him. A true friend is one who truly helps, even if it means being hated.

This your friend may not understand what he's doing, what's he saying, why will anyone consider allocating such a huge percentage to gambling, it means he may not have savings, talk more of emergency, with what he said taking care of immediate needs might even be a problem for him.
We should always remember that we are supposed to gamble with an amount we can easily let go, it means if want to allocate any fund ro gambling, it should be something that we won't at any point be bothered about if we lose them all, there's no two ways about it that this your friend is obviously taking gambling as another source income his action says it all.

40 percent is a big amount. Unless you are addicted, surely no one would want to put such a large part of their income on the uncertainty of gambling. I don't know what his monthly salary is, but if I calculate his monthly salary as $200, then forty percent is $60! But if he invested this amount every week, then the investment amount would be $720 in a year and $7200 in ten years! He is gambling with risk just to get temporary excitement, whereas if he had invested, he could have profited more safely than gambling without stress. If I were in his place, I would never allocate 40 percent of my money to gambling. At most, 10 to 15 percent, but not more than that.

Allocating 40%? I think 40% is much for me to allocate into gambling because I have other stuff that needs the money, well that doesn't matter if he's being profitable in his gambling, but in a situation where he's not being profitable. He's set for a financial doom seeing that he said that he said he can as well refill when his money is used up.

Well, we have already seen the negative effect of spending up to 40% on gambling "his friend could barely save money". No matter how much one earns, 40% is quite too much to spend on gambling. If I have a friend like that, I will not lend him any money when he comes begging after using up almost half of his weekly earning on gambling.

Depending on how much I earn, 5%-10% of my weekly earning should be enough. Most times I do not calculate how much I spend, but I do ensure that whatever I spend is what I am comfortable losing if I become unlucky that day.

If you look very well, that guy might just be telling you lies and trying to deceive you. Who does that? That you will keep allocating 40% of your salary to gambling, this is unrealistic especially if it is a routine. How much is now allocated for rent and other bills?. I said he could be lying because there are some friends that doesn't want you to know what they are doing. They will be building their own house but don't want you to know about it and so they want you to see them as someone that is not responsible yet they go behind to do the right thing.

However, whether he is truly addicted to gambling or he is trying to deceive you to believe he is taking some irresponsible move on his life, you should stay away from such friend because whichever way, he is not living a good life or pretending to you as a friend.

I think that depends on the gambler, logically you are supposed to stake what you can afford to lose. The problem with a lot of gamblers is that they try to follow the pace of other players forgetting that everyone cannot be on the same level. 100 dollars can be an amount of money someone makes dialy and to another person it might be the budget for a whole month, learn to do things at your level and pace.

Allocating 40% of your income just for gambling is a terrible decision because allocating such a large portion carries a high risk that your finances will be disrupted and you will not be able to save and invest your money in more productive things since most of the money you earn will be spent on gambling.

If it's for gambling, then you shouldn't allocate such a large amount of money. I think that a few percent of your income is enough, because gambling should be viewed as entertainment, not something where you can spend so much money in the hope that you will always win or make it a consistent source of income.

Only allocate a small portion of your income to gambling, so that you can save and invest your money in more productive things that can improve your life.

This can be entirely dependent on an individuals income and it's actually a bad idea to think of it as a percentage, except as a max scenario that is ever really hit - certainly not something that someone should be aiming for each week or even have that idea in their mind. It is also highly dependent on someones current situation, for example someone in their twenties will have different priorities and expenses when compared to someone in their 60's. In almost every situation though 40% would be way too high and you should at most be spending in the 5-10% region, any higher than that and you are likely to end up with an addiction that is way harder to break free from later on.

Most gamblers today don't know that they are addicted to gambling because their salaries always come regularly every month. If they somehow get to know or take a record of the amount they spend on gambling every month, they will take a long break from gambling.

It's pitiful that someone is spending 40% on gambling and he takes it as a normal thing, to be comfortable with that approach. He doesn't know that things do change and the work he has won't retain him forever. Family and emergency bills will always come up, and how does he intend to sort all that when it comes up since he has no savings.

That your friend, he doesn't know what he is up to. I pray he retraces his step before it's too late because I see him in years to come, regretting his today actions on gambling

Obviously, this amount should be indicated as a percentage of income, and accordingly, the higher the income, the more part can be allocated to gambling. According to statistics, expenses with an average income tend to be 70-80%, and I don't understand how your friend spends 40% of his income on gambling. Obviously, he is a dependent and all his expenses are paid by his parents or his wife.

I don't understand what level of addicted gambler he is because he allocates 40 percent of his monthly salary for gambling. He is an irresponsible and inexperienced gambler, especially to maintain his family, he has to balance his income and expenses, but he has budgeted 40 percent of his monthly salary for gambling and with the remaining 60 percent he will bear his own expenses and family expenses, so he will not have any savings. So it is normal for such an inexperienced and unwise gambler to make such a reckless budget and it is also normal that he will not be able to save.
