StarCrypt – A Social Network in Development Exploring P2P Architecture

A few days ago, I published a post briefly outlining my social network idea, but I don't think I explained the project's direction very well, so I'll elaborate a bit more.

How did the project begin?

The idea arose from observing the increasing regulation and pressure on digital platforms in Europe. This made me wonder if it would be possible to design a social network from scratch, aiming to reduce dependencies and single points of failure.

It wasn't born out of political motivation, but rather from a technical concern:

Can something be made more resilient and more user-centric?

What is StarCrypt?

StarCrypt is a social network I'm developing from the ground up. Conceptually, it would be similar to Twitter, but with:

A focus on privacy

A design conceived from the outset

A marketplace deeply integrated within the social network itself

The marketplace will accept BTC, XMR, and traditional payment methods like PayPal or credit/debit cards. The idea isn't to create something exclusive to the crypto world, but something open to all types of users (where you can also pay with PayPal or credit card).

There will be moderation, obviously, especially in serious or illegal cases. The intention isn't a complete absence of rules, but rather to try to maintain a reasonable balance.

Current Status

This is my first major project, and I'm actively developing it.

It's currently built in PHP and MySQL.

I'm not seeking investment or selling anything. I'm simply building and learning along the way.

What I'm Thinking About Now

I'm evaluating whether it makes sense to:

Maintain a well-designed, centralized architecture

Move towards a hybrid model

Or explore something closer to P2P in certain areas

This is where I'm interested in more technical feedback:
Do you see a social network and marketplace with a realistic decentralized model as viable?

Any technical criticism is welcome.

If you want to contact me, here's my email: starcryptproject@protonmail.com  Although I used to have an email alias (which I still have), it's best to contact me using my current email address.

I've checked your post history, and it seems like you haven't posted a demo or something similar. Why not focus on launching a demo first so we know how it will play out in real time? I'm not sure how you're going to manage a marketplace and social media at the same time. Unless you have dedicated teams for each service, it doesn't make sense to mix them together (legal issues aside). It doesn't help that there seems to be a conflict of values, judging from your goal and your architecture (user-centric vs moderation/centralized architecture).

Nice idea, but as joniboini  mentioned you should post a demo or something similar.

Additionally,  I think bitcointalk.org is already a social network focused in privacy, p2p, and it also has a marketplace  Smiley
This is a great place.

StarCrypt – A Social Network in Development Exploring P2P Architecture

Since you mentioned the name starcrypt do you now own the domain starcrypt.com, or any other domain extension?
According to Whois, it was registered in 2013, before the beta and alpha testing. It's better to secure the domain first, so you have a platform for alpha and beta testing.

Hi, no, I don't have the domain yet. Right now I'm focusing on local development and refining the architecture before moving to the public testing phase, and further improving the design.

You're right: securing the right domain will be an important step before any alpha or beta release. I'm currently evaluating the best option (.org or other extensions), depending on availability and the long-term direction.

Thanks for your comments.

Responding to you and joniboini:

I understand what you mean about having a demo; it would certainly clarify things. Right now, I'm still working locally and refining the core structure before releasing anything publicly.

And yes, Bitcointalk already functions as a kind of social network and marketplace in many ways.

If needed, I can share some screenshots or short videos of the current stage of development. Feel free to ask any questions.

Thanks again for your comment

But you mention this "StarCrypt – A Social Network in Development Exploring P2P Architecture" so we assume that you already have the domain.

the StarCrypt.com is already owned, and it will take thousands of dollars for the owner to let it go if he accepts your offer

I give you a recommendation buy StarCrypt.org now for a 42% discount $7.48/yr it is the best domain extension for anything related to Community-driven projects.

But hurry up, someone might grab it fast and resell it to you for 100x  Cheesy

Thanks, it's perfectly understandable that it seems like I already have the domain.

I thought about buying the .pro, but you're right, the .org is better.

Besides building a platform, you should know which domain extension is suited to it. For example, there is a .casino extension, but will a wiki-based platform be suited to that domain? Of course, no.
So pick the right domain name and the right extension because it carries your brand, so why.pro extension? You should include a clear explanation of why it is related to your project.
Anyway, goodluck to your project.

I think OP already clarified that he no longer wants to buy the .pro domain. If we're speaking about SEO and clarity, it's definitely a bad pick because the domain usually signals a professional service like lawyers, doctors, etc., according to some articles that I've found. It's not suitable for a social network for sure. Then again, changing the name is also an option. A rebrand is quite common for crypto projects anyway.

Best advice!  Don't spend any money on a certain TLD - use that money for development or promotion.  If your social network is successful people will call it "StarCrypt" without adding the domain extension.   (Facebook.org would still be called Facebook.)
