In my opinion, it doesn't have to be avoided, because something that is free can also be taken advantage of, but if you have a principle to avoid it, that's fine because I'm sure you have your own reasons for doing so. What I'd add to this is there's a difference between sacrifice that builds you, and sacrifice that just runs you down. Both experience the same feeling of the moment. Both hurt. But one is taking you somewhere. The other is just suffering without direction.

I would like to add one more saying by Bill Gates here, "If you are born poor, its not your mistake but if you die poor then its your mistake". If someone is born in a poor family in a country, whose leadership is also corrupt then its not his fault. What he can do is to either work hard and change his living standard or move to some developed country. Otherwise he can spend rest of his life cursing the corrupt leadership. There are many examples in my circle, where middle class people moved to developed countries in search of better life and they are living a happy life now.

Yeah, but I wouldn't call it anything free, but things like being a national of a developed country are a blessing, but that is pure luck. There are many things in life that you cannot select you just get them by default. One of those things can be your religion, etc. However, keep in mind that having nationality doesn't mean that you will get everything free or that you won't face hardship in life. If you are religious you might be familiar with this quote that says "Faith without work is dead". That being said, being passive doesnt grow anything, and just wastes your precious resource which is time. Although things may suddenly come your way, those are not often frequent, and relying on them is unsustainable. Thats why we emphasize getting the work in ,even if theres small results, there is still work accumulating.

There are instances where certain things can be gotten without you having to do too much work. when such things happens, there is no justification that you have to leave it just because it is free. while you are working really hard, nature has a reward mechanism whereby it is capable of bringing something to you that does not require that you work too hard for you. a sensible person will lay hands on that thing and get the best out of it while an unreasonable person will want to let it go just because it supposedly came soo easily.

It is not wise to chase after free things but at the same time, it is reasonable to better position yourself such that when opportunities comes, you can easily leverage on them.

Even in African spirituality, nothing is free. You pay for sacrifices and the rituals, you get the result. Spiritual rituals and practices in Africa is very costly, to get the best result from the right practices by the best healer who understands the work, it takes sum but the result isn't fake.
