Major League Soccer bans two former players for extensive gambling on matches

I saw this yesterday. Major League Soccer has decided to ban Derrick Jones and Yaw Yeboah for life after finding out that the two players are involved in extensive gambling activity during their 2024 and 2025 seasons. It was also found out that the two players are betting on their own matches. The MLS also concluded that the two players had most likely shared inside information with other bettors.

Just as additional info, the two players were first put on administrative leave pending a league review for potential rules violations in October 2025 before being banned for life by the MLS after they concluded their investigation this month.

I am still baffled at players like this who risk their well paying career that they most likely worked hard to get just for gambling.

The biggest mistake these guys did was sharing their bet slip with others, knowing fully well the risk associated with it if caught by the football panels, but yet they took the risk and now facing the consequences of their greed and actions. Because to be frankly speaking, I'm very very angry right now that these guys could ignorantly trade their entire football career for just a few money that is not even up to half or close to their weekly pay-check. And even if it was close to, it's actually not what sacrificing their career for. Because I'm pretty sure that greed and lack of contentment is what could have resulted to this, and that permanent or lifetime football banned was actually harsh. Because if they had given them either 4 or 5 years football ban, it would have been quite okay than a lifetime permanent ban. However, this is a lesson to other footballers out there, to know that a bet is not worth sacrificing your career with.

I wonder if this is just a scam or simply unethical, since the reason isn't very clear. I understand that betting on your own match could lead to match-fixing, especially if it's a key player, but what I'm curious about is what leaked information they were sharing. More match-fixing?.
This is going to happen more and more often; it seems like the mafia has taken over sports.

I don't think this is the first time I'm coming across this particular case of cheating by players. Only comment I guess I can make is that it might be less feasible in big leagues probably because they are more monitored. Some things like numbers of corner kicks and yellow cards can easily be cheated.

It may not seem like much at first but surprisingly when these stuffs stack up as combo bets the odds are pretty crazy. Other major bets might be harder.

Well it's easier to manipulate some games than others. Soccer depends more on team effort and performance unlike games like tennis, boxing and many others where the outcome of the bets depend on only one person that way it's very easy to manipulate. In a boxing match for instance a player can choose to lose on purpose.

It might not be with a KO obviously because it's painful but points can make that happen if it's a friendly match it's even way feasible.

I believe the ban justifies what both Derrick Jones and Yaw Yeboah have done, which totally violates the MLS gambling rules that strictly prohibit players from betting on matches, especially those they participate in.
I wonder what they were thinking by placing bets on their own performances in a match to the extent of betting on receiving a yellow card, which is total manipulation, not to mention players being prohibited from gambling based on MLS rules.
