I did not know if they have been divorced at the time, but according to the court, it is an estranged wife. The oldest daughter of the ex-husband tell her father the plan of his ex-wife. The father used CCTV to know that her ex-wife used CCTV to know where the password of his Trezor is which is a six digit code. Used it to steal his 2,323.28423347 BTC, sent the bitcoin to 71 bitcoin addresses which remain dormant since 2023 after it was stolen.

I wanted to post this in scam accusation board but I think beginners and help board can be helpful for some people to also see it, especially the newbies. We really need to be careful and protect our coins. There are just some mistakes that we may not know and we should make sure no camera is watching us while backing up our seed phrase, passphrass, private key, wallet password or while using our wallet, What if it is an online wallet, some people will blame it on malware, but not knowing that it is someone around someone that did the thing.

I am not yet saying the defendant is not innocent and neither am I saying she is innocent, but there is possibility that something like this can happen.

I don't blame the man but his ex-wife who stole his password in their house. He trusted his wife but she betrayed him since she didn't not love him and have plans to steal from him which was why she went this far. I think that our homes should be the safest place to hide our seed phrase and valueable documents regardless whether, CCTV is on or not.

Those that are not yet married should be careful with the kind of woman you bring into your life as your wife because she might be a thieve unknowingly to you.

All it took was the PIN, then she went straight for the recovery seed and that's it, hmm, been cautious can't get rid of all evil in this world, you can't always be perfect, as careful as this man must have been, he wouldn't have imagined that his partner will betrayed him this way.

Is this enough reason to never get married? Maybe for some but to many it's not, because your luck won't be the same with others, some people will be blessed with good partner in this life.

You can't be careful enough, but some things are unavoidable because you aren't the master at the wheel, many people will still marry wrong and many will also marry right, what I can hard up is trusting your instincts, if something feels wrong do not be misguided by your feelings or emotions.

In this case the man was not negligence, he just trusted his wife, and he never knew something like that was going to happen, of course is marriage and once people get married they become one and shares everything, nothing is kept secret from the other, from this story he actually never revealed his pin to his wife, but she went extra mile, could it be that she is a spy or just in for his money, because that is pathetic. But let this not discourage some men from getting married though, all women are not the same, just ensure that whoever you are getting married to is reasonable and responsible, also pray for direct and insight. This is way beyond physical strength. It horrific.

He trusted his wife or didn't even trusted completely, but didn't take the ultimate caution that cost him 2000+ bitcoin now. So we can't really trust anyone anymore because the wife is someone who we share everything with, which apparently means our finances too.

These kind of stories make me more afraid of this world, do we really become that cruel? Betray the one who trusted you completely...

Probably that ex‑husband never even looked at her face closely enough to notice she has both eyes and ears. Grin

The lesson learned from this case reinforces my view that when dealing with crypto you should trust nobody not even relatives. In fact for their own safety it might be better if they don’t even know you have any involvement with crypto at all.

Did you even ask or ever thought what might have happened behind the scenes, what the man may have done to make the woman go to such extent. When you hear or read stories like this, don’t just look at what the media is trying to portray, also try asking some relevant questions too. What led to their divorce, what went on before the divorce and maybe after the divorce too, there could’ve been several justifiable reasons to what may have led to such an act and sometimes, infact, most times the media doesn’t always tell the whole story. Just my thought.

It just doesn’t get better, every day with new tactics being uncovered  Smiley . Atleast, we get to know more on 1000 ways to get your wallet compromised.

The man is paying the price of trusting too much if the wife was truly the one that stole the password.. On the other hand, there’s a possibility the CCTV is online, and many scenarios could have resulted from that as well but , the wife is the prime suspect if she was truly caught on camera.

https://www.iclr.co.uk/document/2026001715/2026ewhc532kb_TNA/html

At first I felt it was a rewind video that exposed the password which would have made me think, who would point his CCTV camera at his wallet’s seed phrase to the point that, it gets enough visibility on it but, that’s not the case but apparently, a location to where it’s hidden. You can’t get too careful than that and frankly, the CCTV did its job quite frankly.

I wouldn’t understand how someone would do that to a person you practically spent some good memories with before whatever happened did happen but, doing that to a person is pure evil.

We may not exactly know how it happened but with what I think, this is not about trusting his wife or not. I do not think there would be a man that will trust his wife with huge amount of coins that is worth hundred of million of dollars. It is his wife and possibly also with his wife sister that just looked for a way to steal his coins. The man will think he protected the coins even from people at home. I think this can possibly happen to anyone but it is good we learn the lesson from a thresd like this instead.

That's the beauty of CCtv at home it reveals anything within it reach, if the wife footstage is obvious on the camera there's need for proper investigation and persecution immediately. Women can be so deadly with their ex husband, they can do anything to make your life miserable if you're not careful or stay far from them.

That's why I keep telling men never to trust women, or open up to them they will ruin your life if you hurt them one day, so if you're married don't be too open with your wife to know the source of your income, she can manage some aspect of your business.

This is a reminder that no person can be trusted with your bitcoin but only yourself. That's your hard-earned asset, so always take the best caution so that other people will have no means to steal it or take advantage on it.

If it means keeping it secretly from your wife or from your kids, then do it if its the best way to gain privacy and security. Everything that has value, particularly bitcoin which has the most profitable value, should always be hidden like a real gem, and that no one should know about it but only yourself.

We may not exactly know how it happened ..
I tend to agree with this.
We may not know exactly what happened since the complainant didn't have solid evidence against his ex‑wife.  The CCTV footage circulating online could also have been compromised.  The negligence in this case lies with the man, since he didn't safeguard his passphrase properly.

If it's true that his ex‑wife stole his Bitcoin, perhaps they weren't on good terms then, at that time, he should have secured his Bitcoin.  In better times, however, we shouldn't keep such secrets from our loved ones, because if we pass away, they might need access to our Bitcoin and could use it responsibly, IMO.

If that's the case, why even getting married to that woman, if you can't trust her with money?

Better just have girlfriends if you can't find anyone trustworthy, and if you want kids, you can always do with Cristiano Ronaldo did.  Tongue

I am not yet saying the defendant is not innocent and neither am I saying she is innocent, but there is possibility that something like this can happen.

Obviously, there's no way you can say that you won't trust anyone with certain information even when you term it as a private information because things can happen a certain way that the information you give to a third party can save you. In our time when some women you term to be your wife can be really selfish it's very possible that some can even go to the extent of having you killed just because know too have a certain amount of bitcoin in your possession. That's why it's still advisable that while you allow an insider knowledge of where your seed phrase is, letting them know the amount In that safe is to an extent unnecessary.

In this case the man was not negligence, he just trusted his wife, and he never knew something like that was going to happen, of course is marriage and once people get married they become one and shares everything, nothing is kept secret from the other,
I strongly oppose trusting our partner with crypto storage. Bitcoin is trustless; anyone with access to the keys can spend it regardless of your circumstances, whether you're under the influence of your environment, relatives, alcohol, or whatever. If I don't trust my own brain to remember my keys, why should I trust anyone else?

A self-custody wallet should be controlled solely by you, regardless of whether you trust your partner or not. If you decide to share because of trust, create a multisig wallet.

In this case, if the man entrusted the wallet to his partner, I consider that the first mistake. However, at this point, I don't understand how his hardware wallet ended up in his wife's hands.

He could be a womanizer or drug addict or whatever things you consider as worse but it doesn't justify stealing his possessions, if I did wrong, then you did one wrong, which never makes things right or neutralizes.

So what is the solution if someone have that much assets, should build a safe room with access to no one and take all his business in that place alone which seems to be the only option I guess. Roll Eyes

Passphrase will be useful if you're trying to hide your balance from people close to you. create a hidden account with your real balance and a main account with $100 or $1000. Choosing a passhapre doesn't have to be complicated; it should be something you can remember or write down in a separate place. a multi-signature wallet is also helpful. Keep one signature at home, another in a secure bank vault, and a third in a secret location known only to you.

The father used CCTV to know that her ex-wife used CCTV to know where the password of his Trezor is which is a six digit code.
Not his hardware wallet password, but the seed phrase. If she had gotten just the password, there is little to nothing she could have done with it without the device itself.

The husband, Ping Fai Yuen, claims his estranged wife secretly obtained his hardware wallet recovery phrase via home CCTV and transferred the bitcoin without his permission in 2023.
This is a very interesting case and i look forward to seeing how the U.K. property law would apply in reaching a verdict in this case. So apparently the estranged wife was able to view her ex-husband's recovery phrase through the CCTV in his home and move the coins to new addresses, which by the way hasn't moved since it was stolen.

I am wondering why the ex wife still had access to the CCTV in his home and why the seed phrase was easily visible to the cameras. Or maybe they were still married as at the time of this incident. That said, the case is going to trial and it would be interesting to see who wins.

I read the report and see that the woman (ex-wife) did not steal the Trezor wallet, but steal the wallet seed phrase.

Quote
Used it to steal his 2,323.28423347 BTC, sent the bitcoin to 71 bitcoin addresses which remain dormant since 2023 after it was stolen.
Bitcoin was stolen to use later so these bitcoins stored in 71 addresses since 2023 will be moved again. It's only matter of time when these coins change from dormant to active as the woman or anyone related to this scam - like her sister - will need use these coins.

I wanted to post this in scam accusation board but I think beginners and help board can be helpful for some people to also see it, especially the newbies.
It's more like a story shared from news, and re-shared here, so it's not an accusation against anyone. This topic does not fit to be in Scam accusation board.

Generally, as spouses or partners, family members, friends, colleagues, people must keep their wallets, wallet seed phrases and any other backups very secretly. Losing one of them means very high risk of losing coins especially with wallet mnemonic seeds that can be imported in a wallet recovery process and steal your coins.
