Yesterday I clicked the Updated Topics page (aka, "Show new replies to your posts") and I noticed that it reset all the topics that I'd replied once.

I had tried many times in the past to reset this manually somehow, either by clicking "unwatch" or "notify" to the topics that were no longer relevant to me, but I never accomplished that (unwatched and notification-disabled topics still appeared when a new reply was made), and the result was an endless list of "updated topics".

Was this recent reset done on purpose to clean up the forum? And also, is there an option to do this manually yourself?

I think it has been like this for a while now, the unwatch feature doesn’t stops any topic from appearing in that category of replies to new your posts or even unread posts since last visited, i think what you need to have is a watchlist, you can add all this topics there such that when you unwatch a certain topic the watchlist gets updated.

I think it’s because of discussions like this that theymos said this

I don't understand why anyone would not use the watchlist. You can configure the watchlist to be exactly the same as "show new replies to your posts" by configuring your posts to be auto-watched and adding your posted-in topics to your watchlist. After this is done, you can unwatch topics that you don't want to see.

I think someone here has also highlighted something very similar to this in the past and I've tried to find a way around it but I still haven't gotten a hang of it. I want to believe in on of the reasons is because I don't rely much on it. As for this part, is there a chance it gets cleared if you clear your browser cache?

Does this mean you'll have to mark all your topics as watched because on my end it seems like it's automatically marked as watched including replies.

What do you mean by "reset"? I sometimes accidentally click it, and that list has always been very long.

I don't understand why anyone would not use the watchlist.
The reason: it wasn't obvious how to use it until I read this post.

either by clicking "unwatch" or "notify" to the topics that were no longer relevant to me
That's the part that isn't intuitive: "unwatch" works on the Watchlist, and "notify" works on emails.

I swear, my Updated Topics page got reset recently and started from zero. Hasn't yours reset? Can you click and tell me if you see many pages with topics you haven't replied since last year?

As for this part, is there a chance it gets cleared if you clear your browser cache?
I didn't clear my browser cache. It just got reset out of nowhere.

What does a Brand New member with no posts see when clicking that page? That's what I saw, until I got new replies in threads like Wall Observer, which made them appear again.

It sounds like you must have clicked "Mark ALL messages as read"*. I just tested it (on LoyceBot): there is no confirmation popup, it just wipes the list and also the Watchlist.

* That's weird: the text shows as "mark all messages as read", but when I copy it, the word "ALL" gets emphasized. That is indeed how it's in the page source. It would be good to show up like that all the time.

I have updated topics until 2022, that means yours which is reset is actually marked all as read, I think after this on only new replies will now start adding up to that field again. This is also a new way of clearing old updated topics then.

Does this mean you'll have to mark all your topics as watched because on my end it seems like it's automatically marked as watched including replies.

It’s automatically marked as watch except you toggled it off yourself.

I just saw this for the first time. I clicked it and it did actually reset the Updated Topics. I don't remember ever clicking it. I must have accidentally clicked it without knowing.

My followup question is: how can I stop following a topic? Marking all read is a nice cleanup, but I'd rather have a "nuke" option that completely unfollows all these threads that are no longer relevant to me, and never displays them at Updated Topics, unless I make a new reply and follow them again.
