It will never be free. If it is free, how are the exchanges going to make money? Let's not forget these exchanges have a huge staff which needs their monthly wages and without salaries, these exchanges will fail really fast. Even if these exchanges are automated, they still have a bunch of employees taking care of the operations which can include customer support, backend entries or executive level operations. Even the founding team needs their salary, right? Where does this salary come from? It is us who pay the trading fees which contributes to the revenue of that exchange. Without the revenue, these exchanges can never exist.

Even if you see zero trading fees, it can be limited only for a certain time, or some other mode of fees can be already implemented to that pair. Let's keep one thing in mind, exchanges will never make trading free.
