OP said, it's an account he created but he apparently has no records of his account's name. Strange, but who am I to judge.
What you recommend makes no sense to me, because it's not clear if OP has setup a security question+answer and even if he had and used this security question "recover" option his account would be locked immediately. Or am I missing something? Added later: yes, I did miss that security question is optional by the wording.
This is known for a long time and I'm not sure why this method is still recommended. AFAIR such a locked account can only the unlocked by the forum's recovery team (admins can too, but they don't do it and have delegated this task to the recovery team). And the recovery team needs solid proof that you're the actual owner of such an account (staked Bitcoin address or GPG key, rarely other evidence is accepted from what I've read here (not going into details here, but I remember website ownership seems lastly have been accepted in another case)).
Post edit (wrong conclusion put into a quote):
Took me a bit to realize that you don't need to enter anything on the login page and you can immediately click on
Forgot your password? where you can enter your registration email address and don't need to tick the box for "Ask me my question.".
That way it should indeed be possible to get the account name because IIRC it will be stated in the password reset email you receive.
