China backed Trump’s position that the Strait of Hormuz should be unblocked and that no one should collect any tolls. As soon as Trump played his high-stakes cards for Chinese AI right under Xi’s nose, Xi was ready to trade his vassal, the Iranian military junta, for these “glass beads” Smiley

What card did Trump play that would make Xi willing to sacrifice his allies? Are you talking about Trump allowing Nvidia to export H200 chip to Chinese partner? That is old and outdated information, and the Chinese side has stated that they no longer intend to buy them. Instead, they are striving to create domestically produced semiconductor chip.

To put it bluntly, Trump gained almost nothing from this trip

As for China’s statement about the Strait of Hormuz. If you pay close attention, you will notice that every head of state makes a similar statement when asked, because that is how political diplomacy work. I think you already know this, right?  Grin

The point of this trip was not to actually "gain" something, it was to appease Trump and nothing more. You take him to second biggest economy in the world, and make him think that he is doing great, and he becomes happy and that's what he did, he just does things to be happy about himself, not to help the nation.

In fact, as long as he believes that he is great, he could be making the nation worse and he still would feel great about it, he would be happy about it. This was not something that made anything bad at least, so we should be happy about that. I can't imagine what a economical battle between these two nations would look like for the rest of the world, it would not be good at all and we would be in trouble.

I agree with this assessment. Although the result were not as the market expected and were somewhat disappointing due to the lack of breakthroughs and the absence of any significant agreements reached by either side. But overall, the meeting was considered to be quite stable. Because it show that the relationship between the two countries remain stable instead of continuing to escalate tension.

Indeed, if the situation continues to escalate, bad things will happen to the global economy, and that is something nobody want.

Are you genuinely unaware, or are you just pretending not to know? Because before the meeting between Trump and Xi, China had repeatedly expressed views such as the need to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the war immediately, or that this war should never have happened. They were simply repeating what they had said many times before.

Do you think China actually cares whether the Strait of Hormuz is open or closed? They did not really care because they have a good relationship with Iran, and it is not hard to guess that their ships would be allowed to pass through.
