Aside what other members have contributed regarding this recognition you are talking about, I think it is also a time to bring out about the community award managed by icopress, this is another interesting community recognition that take place every year, whereby members come across the forum got nominated, but any other recognition has already been made on the explanation from previous replies, I think the bpip also serves its purpose on this regard as well, depending on the way we want to be recognized.
People who win in the yearly award organized by icopress only receive prices but are not given badges or a space in their profile to display the award they won. Sometimes I see them write it on their personal text space which is not a bad thing. If the forum begins to create badges for such awards, they should be ready to create more every year.

You are right, winners from the contest do get their reward being given by the organizers and that does not reflect on their forum profile, even though we can still count such as an achievement from the forum despite the fact that it does not reflect on their user profile, except the customized such on their personal text space, however, it is also important that we learn more about the forum badges and ranks, we have like donators, who have earlier donated bitcoin to the forum, we have the copper member rank, which can be purchased by anyone and so on.

This leads me to the question: do we need any other form of rewards other than merit?
No.

Merit works, it's doing it's job of preventing much spammers from ranking up
Maybe in the past, but not anymore. There are far too many shitposters ranking up lately  to say that merit system works as intended.

In the neighboring forum - Altcoinstalks, the admin decides and implement. In some cases, milestones are set and when you hit it, you'll automatically be rewarded with a bad.

There's a badge for making 2 posts with 60 secs and such similar type of badges that could encourage spam.

There, you'll be rewarded with a star, when you keep creating topics/threads.

There reality here is that theymos doesn't have that time. Infact, Satoshi doesn't seek recognition, otherwise he would have been here collecting more awards, rewards and badges.
This is what an average altcointalk profile looks like to me. Who in their right mind would want to see it here?

Ah damn it you beat me to it, this was my first impression in relation to the OP.

Look the merit system is in place to reward everyone, those with over 10k merit are already known.
If we create something extra, an additional form of recognition then in time there will be a call for
another add-on.

The members with the highest ranks are not interested in any extra sort of recognition, they have already
reached the legendary position, no need for Double Legendary, Super Legendary or Ultimate Legendary.

Never breaking the rules isn't weakness.

On the basis for special barges for consistent quality posters, that is not necessary because the merit system is meant to reward that as it will lead to growth in ranks as well. Since the idea of adding new higher ranks did not scale through, there is absolutely no need of adding any new barge to good posters even though that is what the forum need.
Let's assume this idea of badges serving as award for said consistent quality posters is approved it won't take long before it appears to be looking boring before another user would come out with another similar possible suggestions for rewarding high ranking members that have reached the zenith of the rewards.
Since the earning of merit as a reward for quality posting is not limited to a specific end, members in legendary ranks have continued to compete in achieving higher range of merits which gives them pride reaching those levels of merits numbers. What makes this unique is that it's unlimited, unlike what has being severally suggested in different posts like this one.
