Is Bitcoin Mining Still Profitable in 2026? My Thoughts

As we move further into 2026, the question of whether mining is "dead" for the average person comes up constantly. We’ve seen the landscape shift from home-based GPU rigs to massive industrial operations. But is there still a seat at the table for smaller players or newcomers?

1. The Efficiency Race (ASIC Dominance)
The difficulty adjustment has reached levels that were unthinkable a few years ago. If you aren't running the latest generation of ASICs (like the newest Antminers), you are essentially paying to lose money unless your electricity is practically free.

2. The Energy Factor
Electricity remains the #1 "silent killer" of profit.

Industrial rates ($0.03 - $0.05/kWh) = Still very profitable.
Residential rates ($0.12 - $0.25/kWh) = Likely ROI is negative.

3. The "Hobbyist" Perspective
Is it still worth it if you aren't a whale?
If you are mining to "get rich quick," the answer is likely no. However, if you are mining for:
- Non-KYC Sats
- Supporting network decentralization
- Heating your home in winter (dual use)
Then the "profit" is measured in more than just USD.

so they need to spend a small amount .

cost will be 150 or so for the unit and 25 a year in power.

to get nothing.

that is basic at home solo mining.

i do it and it gives me a tiny chance every single block to hit that block.


I can afford to spend 150 plus 500 in power the next twenty years. to solo mine.

and in twenty years i will more likely be dead then I will have hit a block.

That’s the most "hardcore" Bitcoin thing I’ve heard all week. It’s pure math over hopium. Most people on this forum are chasing "moon," but you’re just happy to be part of the hashrate.

Quick question from a learner's perspective: Since you’re underclocking to 0.9 TH, I assume you’re doing it for the silence and the longevity of the chip? Does running it that low mean the Bitaxe could literally run for those 20 years without burning out, or do you keep a spare fan handy just in case?

I have L3+ miners in a free power spot that are from 2017 they burn 600 watts and use 2  120 mm fans set a bit low.

 They still run and since the power is free they make about  25 cents a day profit or 90

Since you've been running those L3+ units since 2017, have you had to do much maintenance on the thermal paste or hash boards, or has the underclocking kept them completely stable all these years?

just blow dust out every once and a while.  the heat sinks are glued in on those.

but by doing 650 vs 800 watts the glue heat sink does not fail.

Also they simply are not a heat dense unit.

2x 120mm fans clearing 650 watts on an L3+ these fans can run around 3500 rpm

vs

4x 120mm fans clearing 3300 watts on an s19 pro (these fans must run fast 5500rpm


the 4 fans make a lot of vibration which is harder on solder joints.

​The comparison between 3500rpm and 5500rpm fans makes total sense, vibration is definitely an underrated killer for those solder joints on the S19 Pro.

The break-even for a solo miner today only works if you have a secondary use for the hardware. If you're using an ASIC to heat your home or water, you're effectively offsetting a bill you’d pay anyway. That’s the only way to stay profitable in high-cost regions.

Regarding green energy: it’s a win for us. Using stranded solar power that can't be sold back to the grid makes small-scale setups like a Bitaxe or an underclocked S21 perfectly viable. It’s no longer a race for the most sats, but for the best energy efficiency.

Are you seeing more people pivot to this heat-recovery model, or is the lottery mining trend still the main driver for home users?

I always recommend that if you need a space heater get a piece of gear that can do 350 to 900 watts on 110v to 240v

power and mine when you need heat.

If your home tariff is 25-35 cents per kilowatt, you'll likely consider solar power and be able to use some of that electricity for solo mining.
I've seen enthusiasts build boilers for heating their homes using ASICs, but this is more of an exception than a regular occurrence. In winter, a backup boiler is needed in case of breakdown.

Unless you live in the UK where energy prices break the bank before you've even got out of bed in the morning

£0.28/KWH ~ $0.38/KWH x 85 = $32.3 in energy costs a day. so ($32.30 - $10.26) $22.04 in costs every day.

So not profitable if you live in the UK.

At 6 cents per kilowatt, in two years I'll get a brick with fans that will cost $200-300 at best. Also, the halving in 2028 will make this ASIC unprofitable. But it's highly likely that an ASIC that currently has a payback period of about two years or more will never pay for itself.
