Ouch.

- Don't be an idiot and reuse the same pin of your mobile phone to the hardware wallet pass.
- Don't reuse passwords in general.
- Keep your damned siblings away from the hardware wallet.

Inversely, using different passwords for different websites is the best thing to do? In a situation where you forget the exact you used, wgg would be your faith? Maybe you could write down the password you jse on eveey website on a book,  and the book got missing; what would be your resolve? I believe that whatever has an advantage also has a disadvantage and this is one of those cases. The best approach would be having not more than three passwords and randomly use each of these three passwords for different purposes. This would help you trace the exact password for a particular entry.

This should be a lesson for all those who are lazy to use different passwords for hardware wallet and other internet stuffs that they're involved in. Using the same password makes it very easy for anyone who know your password to access all your accounts, phones and wallet. It's not a safe practice. Get a diary and write down your different password down to avoid forgetting them. I believe this is why some people do use the same password.

That friend of yours is lucky that it is a brother who wouldn't hot him as some siblings can be tempted to. Just that he couldn't hold back his surprise. A responsible brother. Just like me, my phone lock is an open secret, that is only a secret to any who doesn't know it. On that, using the same lock for my Bitcoin asset doesn't make sense at all. It should be totally different or just similar.

Now you have to pay the bills, for your younger brother's school fees, says the father of my friend who have always hide under the roof of his parent, he is old enough to be married but brotherly don't want that, he have a great plan until everything went awhol.

I can't help but keep laughing still about it, this friend of mine always cherish his Bitcoin like without it there will never be a future, and since he is still living under his parent roof he hid the secret perfectly, until on Thursday morning.

He was about to update his hardware wallet when his father asked him to go and pump water, they were already facing problem with pumping water because of epileptic greed power, so the father shouted on him, go and do it right away before they take the power again.

Bro left his hardware wallet on the table and his sibling enter his room, inserted the same password my brother used on his phone and the wallet gets unlocked, right there is a 1 BTC sitting nicely in the wallet and the boy 😱😱 screamed.

Haaaa brother Kunle is rich, all this while he is rich...

I still can't help but cracking my ribs about this.

Never ever use the same password for your phone on your crypto wallet or hardware wallet.

Luckily the person who accessed the password was a family member. If someone else had accessed it, their assets would have been lost at will. Indeed, sometimes using the same password makes it easier to remember. I used to do the same for social media and email, for example, all my passwords were the same, and I also used the same PIN for my phone and ATM.

But after reading about a case on social media where someone lost access to all their social media accounts, including their email because they used the same password, I finally realized the risk. When someone with malicious intent knows our first password they can access our other social media accounts ultimately gaining access to all of our social media accounts. Furthermore, now that I'm involved in crypto there are several assets on our phones that need to be kept safe. Perhaps another thing besides not using the same password is to also consider not using passwords or PIN that use birth dates or years.

Oh boy, what a story, lol. Tongue

However, i guess we can skip the story, yeah it sounds made-up, and filter it to get the message the op is trying to pass. Though the message could have been better passed without a made-up story, but i don't get to tell people what to do i guess.

It is recommended to always use unique passwords, though hardware wallets use PIN, but we can still skip that part in the story i guess. Just don't use the same password in all your online accounts. Use unique passwords and write them down or use a password manager.

My twitter (X) account got hacked years back when the name hasn't changed to X, because of a website that I used that got its database leaked, fortunately for me I had already stopped using same password for literally every site that I used, only my X account was hacked then, and where I couldn't receover it till date.

No matter how difficult it's to have to carry different passwords in your memory, it's worth it, because of such a time like this or during a data leak, so you don't end up losing everything at same time

Bro, totally agree. I keep my passwords safe and complex. Even family should respect personal stuff. Better to be overly cautious than sorry later. Trust but verify!
If this guy was not allowing his family members to know the password to his mobile device or computer, there is no way they could have been able to access the wallet using the same password.

Maybe that could have saved him from such exposure before talking about the danger of sharing the same password for everything online. People think it's the safest way to remember it; at the same time, it's also the easiest way to be broken into.

Your story teaches a great lesson but I don't want to believe that Kunle has 1 BTC and still allow his parents to live in an elliptical light situation that they had to pump water before they'll cease light and they wouldn't be able to pump water again.

Living in the same house with someone that knows the value of BTC and having upto 1BTC is risky. I don't see myself going to my elder brother's setting and inserting a password to reveal it.
Meanwhile, a good message is passed and well understood.

Never ever use the same password for your phone on your crypto wallet or hardware wallet.

Not only that, never use the same password on any account created online.  This way if ever the site where you have an account is hacked, the other accounts from other platform is not compromise.  Though I also find the story a make-up one but it is somehow light and funny with the intention of reminding us not to make a mistake of using the same password in each of our accounts.

Your story teaches a great lesson but I don't want to believe that Kunle has 1 BTC and still allow his parents to live in an elliptical light situation that they had to pump water before they'll cease light and they wouldn't

Yeah that is harsh and very selfish of Kunle, hiding his wealth while leeching his parents dry.

using same password for everything is not good

THIS IS FOR REAL I mean in 2015-2016 is I forgot the exact year I just use the same password for everything literally everything including my bitcointalk password except my email, long story short one of website that I registered got hacked and my username and password got leaked and this account got hacked and I just recover this account on jan 2020

Now i am using bitwarden and Google password (*tho I dont recommend this one ) to save my password and it turned out 245 already compromised and 505 reused password this because one single website got leaked and everything just puff gone

This is actually most part of everyone’s story, I think one two people have actually experience similar to this about leaking their passwords and that password been used to access other platforms. This is social engineering attacks is still a thing until date.

But your second paragraph also raises concerns of how too many password or not reusing any password at all actually sends you towards trusting online platforms to store this passwords. I think that too many passwords are going to create redundancy which will lead to exposure of the password due to means of how you wish to safeguard it.

Personally I feel like three different passwords are ok, one for regular phone locks, one for social media accounts and one for extra important things like hardware wallet pin. Although this is not also perfect it reduces redundancy

There are two lessons to be learned from this incident. First, it’s a bad idea to use the same password for all your accounts; make it a habit to use different passwords for different services, because you never know when bad luck might strike, and if one platform gets compromised, all your accounts will be at risk and could be accessed by others.

Second, just keep yourself away from others when you're using your wallet - even if it's at home, get into the habit of staying in your own room and locking your device when you're not using it. You never know who might try to access or accidentally damage your device. The security of your device is your responsibility, so if you lose it because of your own carelessness, it’s your own fault for being so reckless and not taking it seriously.

The honest truth is that, people make use of passwords they can easily remember you can not blame them, they have reasons. There was a case that happened few years ago my uncle forgot one of his bank pin, because he was unable to remember it, but funny enough he others because it was something very easy and for the one he could not remember, he had to visit the bank and trust Nigeria banking system, he went through lots of stress before he was able to reset it. Sometimes old age and some health complications can interfere with the memory. And it is almost difficult to hide something from one's siblings.

It was a very sad incident but this happened due to his own ignorance. We often use the same password in the secret passwords we use so that we don't forget it. In this case, we have a lot of risk because if someone gets our password, they can access everything where the same password is used. But if we talk about the lock screen of the mobile, then it is not completely private. Many times, for some reason, we have to tell the password or PIN of the phone to our acquaintances and any of our family members or friends and we do this. In this case, if the same password or PIN is used in any wallet, then of course those who know the password of the mobile can easily access it. Using such a normal password in an important place like hardware is very risky because those who know the hardware must know that they are the ones who use the hardware and those who have a big fund must keep it very secure.
