Everyone can earn merits legally on this forum by contributing something helpful. If a newbie contributes something useful and helpful then he/she can get merits without asking for it but it's also true that sometimes it takes time to see good posts/threads of newbies, however ones consistency is needed to make things better.

There're newbies who earn many merits in a month by contributing something useful and similarly there're those newbies who don't earn any merits for long time. But, one should not get dishearten if he/she doesn't get any merits, instead that member should try to improve his/her knowledge about Bitcoin and continue getting better and posting better and useful stuff. A time will come when that member start getting merits and reach higher ranks.

rat03gopoh really said something I totally agree with. Many newbies have this mindset and they will do anything to earn merits, even going as far as creating overly ambiguous topics they have little knowledge about just to attract attention and merits as well.

It really doesn’t work that way. Sometimes, just being yourself in a way that does not violate the forum rules is enough. Being desperate for merits will instead ruin things for them.

Taking this case as an example, the newbie might have faced the consequences for such behaviour if the OP wasn’t lenient enough. I hope he learns from it, and other newbies too.

When I was a newbie the first thing I did was to read the rules. People fail to do that as they do also to terms and conditions. No body reads that. We should have the habit to always read rules and regulations and also terms and conditions. Laziness is not encouraged here. Let's me guided newbies.

In fact, this is not enough because nobody will remember every rule after reading. Bitcointalk forum isn't similar to any other social platform because of the complexity of its systems. The trust system is a unique mechanism to ensure the decentralized power among the community members without giving the permission to admins to control it, while in other forums, admins control the trust ratings. The merit points also in no difference with karma system but with the difference it cannot be traded or begged for. A lot of other complexities that only spending time navigating the forum is the only way to understand and adopt it.

You can spend time navigating the system and make too many mistakes that will get your account banned. You still have to read through the rules. As you stated that it is not enough just to read and remember all the rules. But it is very important. It will definitely save you from many troubles in the future. As too much mistakes will  be treated as spam or something else by the moderators.

Usually old members don't hesitate to warn a newbie if they think he is behaving against the rules. Someone should be aware about fatal mistakes like plagiarism or sending unsolicited messages. Other mistakes will be learnt step by step along the time. The forum is friendly use in general and doesn't require a strict adhere the rules especially with newbies. The most important rules that should be taken seriously are:
- Plagiarism is strictly prohibited
- Sending unsolicited messages might cause a permanent ban.
- Begging for money or harmful threats.

Later they will be surprised to know that trading forum accounts is allowed and that forum policy doesn't moderate scams which means even scam projects can post and use the forum. Lol
