Trying to migrate a wallet from 2012 in bitcoin-qt. I start migration, enter the password, then I get the eror "Error: Unable to read wallet's best block locator record". I can't find anything on this error message online. Any advice?

Looks like it doesn't have the record of the last block or blockchain tip when it's last synced for some reason.

Try v29.0 (it supports legacy wallets), use "Restore Wallet", let it sync.
After syncing, backup the synced restored wallet file via "Backup Wallet" to create an extra copy and then migrate.
If successful, update your Bitcoin Core to the latest version.
