But the list of threads is so large that I'm confused about where to start.

I thought this 2018 data point was probably the most interesting, and it happened for the very reason you describe. Before I joined my first sig campaign in 2018, I did advertise for a couple of ICOs that went nowhere. It was a real crapshoot back then, but with better odds than a bounty hunter will find now.
