I only mentioned them because they are the ones that I really like what they have been posting in the past, but what you mentioned are not the requirements to become a merit source. Someone that is not really posting on trading discussion will possibly become merit source and not focus on trading discussion. We that are on the trading discussion still know how to earn merits on this forum and we are not complaining. But if someone is not posting very well on a board, I do not see a reason he should apply for merit source of that board, although it is not a criteria.

Not regularly posting on a particular board doesn’t in anyway mean that they can’t source out good posts and merit them when/if made a merit source there. And the fact someone doesn’t post on a particular board doesn’t mean they’re not following the activities there. Some people are more of readers than posters in certain/specific areas. I love to read on the technical and the wall observer boards but you barely see me post on those boards, not because I don’t have what to contribute but because I’d rather learn more than try to contribute, except of course I come across an itchy question I can’t just shake off, then I can ask or make a contribution.

What are the criteria of becoming or applying for a merit source in this Forum? I'm asking this because it seems like anybody can just pop out from nowhere and drop his or her application.

Everyone can apply to be a merit source. No offence to you or the OP.

There are conditions, and the first condition is "somewhat established member".
Hero member if ranking up without merit farming can be considered as somewhat established member so if only looking at the forum member rank, OP can apply for a merit source role.

If you want to be a merit source:

 1. Be a somewhat established member.
 2. Collect TEN posts written in the last couple of months by other people that have not received nearly enough merit for how good they are, and post quotes for them all in a new Meta thread. The point of this is to demonstrate your ability to give out merit usefully.
 3. We will take a look at your history and maybe make you a source.

I am especially eager to have merit sources in sub-communities such as the local sections.

OP no offense but I have to say it the way it is, have we asked ourselves how the other newly appointed merit source are handling their position as merit source? Are they doing well? If they are not doing very well then is ok to replace them with the new guys who applied but if they're doing ok no need for all these.

You can apply to be a merit source anytime, the other "newly appointed merit sources" have their jobs and they can do that well or bad, but it's not OP's responsibility.

Good one but the thing is in as much as we come here to talk here and there about the applicant and his or her application it still doesn't change anything, we can shout from now till the end of this year and if Mr T appoints the member who applied it doesn't change anything we just have to leave with it so if OP have the intention of doing better than the merit source you mentioned is up to him and the funny part about all these is that we can't tell what the next person have in mind, the only thing we have to do is watch how he carries that position and see if he can do it better than the others or if he'll still make same mistakes like they did.
For the regular application of merit source is too much because in as much as we have many persons in that position we still find it hard to see merit being given to post that deserves it, is like the merit itself has traveled out of the Forum. Remember those when 1 merit is like gold, you cherish it with so much joy but these days before you see 1 merit you have to consult the gods of the unknown but yet we have more than 20 merit source in the Forum.

I was not talking about the merit giveaway that The Skeptical Chymist was given, even before he started giving the generous merits, he was posting very well on the economic board. He was the only merit source that I saw on the board at the time few years ago. He was reading many posts and giving posts that deserves merit some merits.

Okay. Thought it was in that angle you were stating your observations. True, The Chymist was known to frequent the economics board and I can remember getting my first merit from him on that board.

It's harder for people who don't have friends to receive merits because abuse from the other people with friends somehow triggered merit sources to become stricter in distributing merits.

With users who have friends, getting merits become easier because they don't need to write good posts to receive merit, and not like 1 merit but a lot while they still complain it is not enough.

Remember those when 1 merit is like gold, you cherish it with so much joy but these days before you see 1 merit you have to consult the gods of the unknown but yet we have more than 20 merit source in the Forum.

Given that you both don’t even reach 1/2 of merits per activity, I’m not surprised you’re saying things like that. What actually happens is the opposite of what you say.

I don't talk that very good posters like you need to have friends to get many merits, it's your inaccurate interpretation about my post.

I don't talk about myself but about shitposters that farm merit and rank up. I will reach to the Legendary rank like how I got the Hero member rank and I did not complain. It's about shitposters complained or newbies with many merits but still complained while their posts are not good.

It's what I want to say like not many users in The future of Bitcointalk are actually good posters, you can call many of them as shitposters and they got a lot of merit, quickly.

It's like they want to get merit quickly for ranking up accounts but not only this they want to circulate their smerit quickly too.

Because they abuse well, we see shitposters with AI and plagiarism with merit or many merit.
