The latest report states that Keyshawn Davis has withdrawn to this fight as he is asking $5 million. I don't know if he deserves what he is asking but for me he hasn't prove anything yet to ask for that kind of amount. The best he could do is fight Haney and beat him then surely his stocks will go up. With this kind of behavior, chances are that promoters will be hesitant to promote him because of his asking price where he is not a champion yet. If he totally withdraws, the question now is if he could get $2 million in his next fight given that his opponent is unknown.

I think he is just protecting his value. Haney’s camp probably already offered him a good amount, but he also had to consider the possible result of the fight.

Haney is still undefeated, and his style could give him a lot of problems. If he takes the fight and loses, his popularity may drop, and he could also get fewer big opportunities after that. Maybe he is simply waiting for the right opponent and the right timing. At the end of the day, boxing is still a business, so fighters will always try to protect their market value.

So everything is in the the side of Keyshawn whether to accept this fight or not? Money is good, it's almost close to what he wanted at $3 million? So this is the best case scenario for him and accept the fight.

Unfortunately, the fight is not going to happen; this would have been a good opportunity for Davis to steal the title and an opportunity to make a name for himself if he beat Haney and to earn a big purse, possibly the biggest in his career.
This is a developing story; I'm sure Davis will come out with an official statement to clarify his action.

Quote
The Ring’s Mike Coppinger confirmed Friday that Davis’ team informed the WBO that he will not move forward with the 12-round, 147-pound championship clash the sanctioning body ordered June 30, when it named Davis the mandatory challenger for Haney’s belt. Davis’ decision denied fans one of the most intriguing fights that can be made in boxing.

Keyshawn Davis has turned down what would’ve been a career-high seven-figure purse for a shot at Devin Haney’s WBO welterweight title.

If I am going to speculate, the next of this crying Haney might be a partnership between Zuffa Boxing and Haney's promotion. We can be quite certain that this might be a superfight between King Ry and the crying Haney.

However, they need a tune up fight for this. King Ry will fight Connor Benn under the promotion of uncle Dana's Zuffa with a partnership with Golden Boy promotions. The crying Haney's tune up fight might be something similar with Zuffa and on 2027 this will be King Ry vs. the crying Haney rematch!

Top Rank Promotion has won the purse bid with a winning bid of $8.55 million so this means that we have a fight.

Not yet, I think, until Keyshawn formally accepts the fight.
Keyshawn was given a 48hr window to confirm in writing his willingness to move forward with this fight. Initial report that his camp was seeking a payout closer to $3m. So, they were supposed to be looking at a $12m purse bid from the promoter, following the 75-25 split. There might be a bit of a chance Keyshawn withdraws from this fight.

The latest report states that Keyshawn Davis has withdrawn to this fight as he is asking $5 million. I don't know if he deserves what he is asking but for me he hasn't prove anything yet to ask for that kind of amount. If he totally withdraws, the question now is if he could get $2 million in his next fight given that his opponent is unknown.

$5m? WTH! So the rumours were true then? None of the promoters are even willing to go beyond $10m, so how on earth can they possibly acquire that amount?

I really had a hunch that they would eventually withdraw from this fight judging how they react after finalizing the payouts. They didn't make confirmation upfront, the reason why the WBO gave him a strict 48hrs window to decide, because they too have a hunch.

I think Keyshawn should've considered this fight, take the 75 split easily on his next matches if he becomes the champion, unless he think he really can't beat Haney.

The fight already went to a purse bid and nobody was willing to pay more than what Top Rank offered. That should be an indication that Davis’ value may not be as high as he thinks it is. Every young fighter wants to get paid like a superstar, but very few want to actually put the work in to prove they deserve those kind of paydays.

Davis has had to cancel fights because of weight problems. He isn’t in the best position to be demanding so much money. If he had beaten Haney, that would be a different story. Then I think his minimum purses should be doubled or even tripled.

Agreed, it seems like Devin Haney is relatively safe bet.
I also see his chance of winning pretty well. You may have noticed that his winning streak almost always comes down to his technical discipline. His jab is not only a setup tool but it also act as range-controlling weapon that disrupt his opponent's timing and consistency.

On the other hand, Keishon Davis is incredibly fast. This will give him an extra advantage. He is a sharper and more explosive counterpuncher, especially in early rounds. So if he can establish a rhythm early on then he could have chance to land a game-changing counter. However, if Davis can't get a knockout or a major knockdown before the 7th round then i think the momentum of the match is likely to go against him. Because if the match goes to full distance then Haney's ring management skill will give him a huge advantage on scorecard.
upd. oh no, I just noticed that Davis has withdrawn from this fight, so this fight is not going to happen anymore

Oh shoot, it's very unfortunate that he wanted more money instead of fighting one of the best in this division. And maybe Haney could see this as a duck on him by Davis. Keyshawn has been talking about fighting the best, but it should be in his own terms with regards to money.

So not sure if this is the right way for his young career. He is not the best boxers as he might thought in this fight. But maybe the purse bid is not enough to make that money for him and no promotions are willing to take it more than the initial bid.

Unless he has a backup fight that would give more payout than this and the possible opportunities he could get if he beat Haney, then his decision to decline the fight is stupid on his part. I'm guessing he doesn't want to risk his record for that amount of payment(he did say the pay is too low). Also, imagine wasting a golden opportunity to fight someone who holds a world title and proving yourself by beating a champion.

At the end of the day, boxing is still a business, so fighters will always try to protect their market value.

But the problem is, when a fighter himself demand big fight, becomes a mandatory challenger then withdraw because he doesn't like the purse. lol

I think there needs to be a fine balance between protecting your career and showing confidence in yourself. If they always avoid big fight out of fear of losing then how does one prove he is truly elite? You will find, many legendary boxer have a losing record. But main thing is that they were never afraid to take big challenge and that is why they became legend. Imagine what would have happened if Keyshawn could somehow beat Haney! He could have earned a bigger opportunity and popularity than $5 million. And the future payday awaited him.

I don't think that Davis has any back up plan for a bigger payout. That could be his biggest for all we know as he is fighting Haney. So it doesn't really make sense why he is going to turn it down as this could be his key.

So yes, he is wasting this opportunity, and it might not come again. Unless he fight another champion that is willing to get him a good money. But he is the boxer that is coming up so he and his team should know that business of it and not turn down this fight fight for Davis.

I really had a hunch that they would eventually withdraw from this fight judging how they react after finalizing the payouts. They didn't make confirmation upfront, the reason why the WBO gave him a strict 48hrs window to decide, because they too have a hunch.

It is possible that Keyshawn Davis realized that he is in disadvantage and he has a record to take care of.  Knowing his boxing style and as counter punching being one of his arsenal, and knowing Haney loves jabs and fights outside and very defensive player, adding that his mid-range boxing style is not suited to Haney's strategy, he just put a huge amount of demand in order to back out of the deal since he knows his demand won't be met.

Quote
I think Keyshawn should've considered this fight, take the 75 split easily on his next matches if he becomes the champion, unless he think he really can't beat Haney.
Yeah, Keyshawn should consider the fight because if he wins, this will put him among the top elite boxers, but I think he knows he can't beat Devin and chooses to take care of his unblemished record.

This prediction is less straightforward than, for example, the "Spence vs. Tszyu in Australia – July 26" matchup, where everything was pretty "simple". At least for me Smiley
Here we have two opponents, each with slightly different strengths. But I’d probably bet on Heaney, simply because he has the potential to hold his own for the first 3–6 rounds and neutralize Davis’s advantages. But… there are always surprises in sports. While I was absolutely certain about the "Spence vs. Tszyu" fight, here I’ll put it this way: my prediction gives a 75% probability of a win for Heaney and a 25% probability for Davis. But these are just my personal guesses-I don’t think they should be used as a basis for betting Smiley

I'll be locking the thread now since the fight won't happen anymore, as Keyshawn decided to decline the fight because of the "low payment" he'll receive(at least that is the current reason going around). It's a shame that the fight won't happen, Haney vs Davis is an interesting matchup.
