The fact is that in most African countries, citizens don't even know that they have the right to certain things. They let fear shut down what they are supposed to do when the government doesn't seem to be functioning. In Nigeria to be precise, we have the right to question the government on why our economy is failing and what he plans on doing to fix it. But how many are even willing to exercise that right. We know that when the crowd is silent, majority would do same and that's a problem in Africa, no body is speaking. There are some important aspects in our economy that strikes a need for questioning and since our government knows that we usually don't exercise our rights, they use it as an advantage for their ill responsibility..
Exactly my point, citizens don't know their rights in the first place That's why this leader assumed auto power over everything and nobody can question their activities and if we do it will not have effect on them. This is serious debates on Africans because we barely vote the right leaders by means of democracy or election but systematically handling over and power are done on the virture of selections of folks and associates and we can never achieve good state without the citizens awareness of rights of democracy and constitution.
I don't agree with you that in many countries that are so called democratic countries where true democracy are not practiced that their citizens don't know their rights, they know their rights very much but they cannot exercise it for fear of being unjustly targeted and prosecuted by their corrupt politicians. Many people believed that the last presidential election in Nigeria, was massively rigged but what could they do about it? Nothing because the government would use their law enforcements and military to intimidate the protesters.
These corrupt politicians have the power while the protesters have none except their voices and these wicked politicians don't care about what the ordinary citizens have to say about them. It is only in countries where they respect human rights that the ordinary man can protest on the streets and the government would listen. Until a strong opposition of powerful and influential individuals stands firm to oppose bad leadership there is nothing much that the ordinary man on the street who knows his rights can do.
When I said citizens don't know their rights, am not totally playing down on their knowledge of the law but most people have no clue how this law is interpreted and because of that they can't just come out and claim not interpretative, government are aware of the citizens rights and what powers lies in them as part of government but the government doesn't want the citizens to exercise that right that's where threats and attacks on leading leaders of the masses came in, just to silence their voice and remain inability to stop their evil activities
