What is the reason behind a bitcoin miner solving a empty block?



I've never seen this before anywhere but today, and miners on here haven't talk about this before, unless I don't just see it happen often, maybe once in a blue moon?

People on the forum have talked about empty blocks before. There was even one that a mining pool mined 2 empty blocks consecutively until the same mining pool mined the third one which was not an empty block.

I see Cointelegraph still continue their habit that convert little or common things into "news". They usually make conversation on social media or forum from semi-popular public figure into "news".

Yea, it happens like that but not often. Since, if you mine a block, you get the block reward. Some miners go ahead to start mining immediately, the last block has been mined regardless if there's any transaction in the new block or not for them not to waste any  time. If they get lucky to add the empty to the blockchain, they get the Coinbase reward for the empty block because it's better than mining nothing

Just like someone here already referenced to the OP mempool actually gives an explanation on why it happens although it's a brief one. Anyways until this your post I didn't even know that it actually happens this frequently. I've been active in a couple of mempool discussions like these but this didn't take note of.

It's probably already mentioned on one of other thread mention by other member, but AFAIK the most common reason is the previous block was just mined (either by tthemselves or other miner). The mining pool need a bit of time to choose TX from their mempool and create new block template that contain selected TX. So rather than letting their miner idle for a bit, the mininig pool decide to create empty block template (that can be created faster) and send it to their miners.

Timestamp on block isn't accurate, but sometimes you notice interval between 2 block is very short. For example,
