Why Governments Banning Gambling Is Never About the Gambling

My take is that we're in a world where different rules nd regultions re set in gmbling nd other settings just to withhold ordinary people from benefiting from some opportunity.
An example is what we see about PolyMarket service: despite all the sets of rules they have broken through their gambling services, their operation is still ongoing, but if the company investors were someone with no political power, the prediction market would have been forced to shut down its services.

Just saying government never bans gambling because of gambling itself just made it seem off. Because government ban gambling for different of reasons known to them. And I'll list a few: we have tax revenue - they want that and maybe someone somewhere is leaking the money out. Some government really do it for genuine purpose. Not all government are corrupt. Some culture and their belief system. Many reasons.

What I think is the play here is that government suppose to maximise every avenue to generate money if it pulls a lot of people into spending too much money in it. They can somehow regulate it to favour them. I mean, that's what most of them do.

Focusing on the gambling ban, all of these factors also influence the government of my country in enforcing gambling bans.
I don’t want to go into more detail about each of these factors, because I’m sure everyone already understands them even without examples.

Isnt the ban already easy to understand in the first place. Indonesia is a Muslim majority country and gambling is against their religious teaching, so banning it is already expected.

Then the government also sees gambling addiction becoming a serious problem in the country. With those two reasons, the ban was almost inevitable.

The reasons went beyond mere religious objections; the impact on the Indonesian population was also a major factor. In my view, Indonesia was not yet ready for legalized gambling at that time, and the public lacked sufficient education on the subject. Consequently, economic issues arose among the lower-middle class, further fueling public opposition. That said, I believe Indonesia could look to neighboring Malaysia as a model if it were to legalize gambling. Because, Malaysia has successfully implemented sensible regulations (to address issues that might arise for its citizens), and also reaping significant economic benefits from the industry.

I believe actual religious beliefs are the exceptions to the norm. There are actual governments which are a literal theocracy, like Saudi Arabia, where religion is actually very important for their local politics. Though, it is true there are also a black market for all those countries which have decided to ban gambling because of Islam.

In the case of countries like Japan and China, you are right. It is about keeping a monopoly. There is simply much money on gambling for it to be ignored by them.

People are going to have serious issue with the government when they are not in line with its regulatory plan or policy, that is why government will not go after the gambling but the gambling platform, so that they are going to have any operating platform under their regulations and they could thereby control them, why the unlicensed gambling platform will not be recognized by the government and they may have to fight against them except they comply as well to be regulated.

You will be in for serious trouble as a gambling company residing or functioning within any governments geography not willing to abide and work in accordance with the authority laws as provided.

The most a casino can do is to lobby the government about certain policies for adjustments where they can and are willing,  any thing otherwise is out of place and a casino should be ready for  what the government chooses to do against them.

Whats your take?

Sometimes we can forget that the government is made up of people with enough greed to just do whatever they like and when it pleases them to do, I mean at least that's how I see them at times. Gambling is not banned in my country but it's heavily frowned on especially where I stay but it is not banned, I suspect is because they are making money some how by allowing these operators to operate but of course it won't be on record, so no evidence or anything like that.

The truth is that even if they ban it, people that gamble will always look for a way around it to make sure they gamble. I’m not sure gambling is something that can be totally eradicated from most people’s life even if the government want to do so, in as much as most person have gotten so used to it, so people must still gamble.
