Personally, I would choose the payment at once for the reason that I would not want it to drag on for the next 30 years - and if it is someone who is 50+ it could mean that they may not even live to receive all the payments. However, I think the system is unfair to the winner because it doesn't actually give him the entire amount he won at once (which would be fair), but rather forces him to take less than 50% at once or offers him payments over many years.

Either way, someone's life changed overnight - I hope they have a strong heart Cool

In this situation, I would choose the lump sum payment without hesitation. Yes, I might have to pay taxes at 40%. This means I'll receive a net payout of $270 million. What's more, it will be completely legal. I'll be richer than the legendary Count of Monte Cristo! 🙋

Over 29 years, I'll significantly increase this capital. I'll buy Bitcoin, Monero, gold, luxury real estate, stocks, bonds, and so on.

Choosing 30 installment payments over 29 years, in my opinion, is tantamount to handing over the management of my capital to someone else. The United States could even disappear within 29 years, not to mention the obligation to pay you back. The US dollar will depreciate significantly over 29 years, so you'll end up with a much smaller amount.

I believe in myself! I'm confident I can manage a massive capital of $270 million wisely.  I don't need $1.04 billion. There's a saying: "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush."💁

As for me I would prefer the lump sum of $450 million instead of the instalmental  payment because I will have full control of the whole money and put it into proper use. If I invested the whole money in a good business the profits will far exceed waiting for 29 years and be collecting the money in instalments.
However, I do understand the reason you would want to take the money in instalments. Because managing such a huge amount of money will definitely be a great challenge. The best idea is to consider a way that we can be able to hold and manage this money for long without mismanaging it.

For me, I would choose to receive the payment by instalment. $20 million a year puts me in the top 1% of earners in the world, and I can do whatever investment I want to with that. With a payment like that, I may not even need to touch a penny from the other payments.

So you are thinking that opting for 30-year installments is wise? I think this is a decision made without understanding inflation and opportunity cost.

Suppose the US economy averages only 3% to 4% inflation per year for the next 29 years. So after 25-30 years your annual $20 million purchasing power will be less than half.

Lottery authority will pay you installments over 29 years, essentially keeping those money with themselves, compounding interest on that money and returning a certain amount to you. Instead of letting the lottery company grab those interest on your money, it would be wiser to invest your money on your own wisdom.

LOL when you win that much money, does it even matter if it’s a quarter/half/a whole billion? Cheesy that’s still a craaazy amount, you could immediately just retire & be set for life. So who cares man, I'd take what's guaranteed right now & live my life!

Both options are good, but I would prefer to receive $450 million at once. Because if I receive the dollars at once, it will be easier for me to start a business or invest. However, if I receive them at once, I will have to pay a lot of taxes at once.
Again, if I receive the money in thirty installments over 29 years, the inflation that will occur each year will not affect me. And if I receive $20 million every year after taxes, it is more than I expected and this amount of money will not be less for me in any way. However, the problem will be if I deteriorate physically or if I die, then whether my family heirs will receive the next money is also an important issue.

The two options are great, any one that you choose makes you very rich but they also have their disadvantages, since both advantages makes you rich I believe that if you're in the winners shoes you should be looking at the option that carries a lesser disadvantage. Receiving millions in payment for 29 would make anybody comfortable for the rest of their lives so it is the easy part but we also need to understand the clause that comes with it. Will a loved one inherit the payments Incase the beneficiary dies before the 29 years expires? What if supposed "loved ones" plots and kill the beneficiary to inherit the fortune? What if the platform goes bankrupt after a few years? These are critical disadvantages for receiving payments for many years. I would prefer to take what I can and move on, if I'm able to manage my finances well I would never be poor with such a huge amount.

If you receive payment in instalments for 29 years, you would receive about $34 million years. So if you take out a total tax payment of about 40%, you would receive about 20-21 million every year after tax.
So what would you choose if you were the one?

After taxes, you will get a lump sum of around $270 to $280 million.

Now think about it, if you just put this $270 million in safe US Treasury Bonds or S&P 500 or Diversified Investment Funds at 5% to 7% interest, you will have an income of $13 to $19 million in first year without any kind of risk !

That is, you can generate passive income equal to or close to the annuity every year while keeping your principal intact! And after 29 year your capital will grow from $270 million to over 1 billion which is never possible if you opt for installment.

A man in Illinois won a $1.04 billion jackpot a few days ago, now he has to choose how he would receive his money.
He could accept a total sum of $450 million at once or receive 30 payments in instalments for the next 29 years.
The lump sum of $450 million sounds nice, but when you consider the taxes, you might be walking home with just over half of that money at the end of the day. I'm not a tax expert, and I don't know the tax regulations of the US or the state, but from my rough reading, you'll have to pay about 40%-42% total in taxes for that amount.

If you receive payment in instalments for 29 years, you would receive about $34 million years. So if you take out a total tax payment of about 40%, you would receive about 20-21 million every year after tax.
So what would you choose if you were the one?
For me, I would choose to receive the payment by instalment. $20 million a year puts me in the top 1% of earners in the world, and I can do whatever investment I want to with that. With a payment like that, I may not even need to touch a penny from the other payments.

If you're bad with handling money or understanding finances, then it might actually be helpful if you only take the installments - at least that way you've protected yourself from spending it all straight away and maybe you learn to adjust to better habits along the way. However if you are reasonable at handling your finances then there is no reason to leave it in the hands of another company (that could go bust let's not forget). You are going to pay the same 40-42% in taxes whether you're getting it as a lump sum or in smaller chunks of tens of millions, there is no avoiding that. However the installments of money will not account for any kind of inflation and $20 million in 30 years time is not going to go as far as it does today, at least if you take the lump sum you can invest it into an index fund and be making 5%+ from that cash every year which would be a sizable amount that you could live off without even touching the rest (but you probably want to splurge a bit before this!).

Hypothetically, in his place, it would be more sensible to receive the entire sum at once. The arguments are as follows: it’s unknown how much longer he will live; it’s unknown how much longer the United States and the dollar will exist; and if they do exist, it’s unknown how much the dollar will depreciate over those 29 years. Nothing lasts forever... so, having the entire sum of money, he can at least take some measures to preserve his wealth.

So what would you choose if you were the one?
In comparison, receiving the proceeds from lottery winnings at a time of $450 million cuts taxes on $180 million, the net result received is $270 million.
Receiving long-term lottery results for 29 years $34 million/year total received $986 million tax cut 40%/year net results received 20x29 total $580 million, Honestly remembering and considering of course if I were in a situation like that would receive in the long run, $20 million is not that little money/year that goes into a personal account.

$20 million/year, I assume renting a house to someone for 29 years, I will take the money to invest in Bitcoin $15 million, the rest I will donate to those who really need it $5 million per year.

The full story here and Here
Actually both options does have its cons.

1. Receive that $450M and have that huge tax deduction on which it would be much more lesser.
2. Tomorrow isnt guaranteed so you might neither die on next month or next year without cherishing out that entire amount for long years.

Well, this kind of decision will really be entirely depending on you. For me i would be getting the option #2 on which i would be able to live an extravagant life with that yearly but of course just like been said that its really that having no guarantees for you to live but of course the amount should be passed up through will specially if you do have the family at least you do have that peace of mind.

I would always go for receiving the  $450 million at a go and not risk leaving the money wit a platform that can go bankrupt or get hitted by government policy and it becomes impossible for me to get access to my money. shey the money is just a jackpot? it does not happen too often and so it is better to get the money off the casino while you still can before stories start coming up. how much is the tax that is too much to be paid and what happens if due to regulation you struggle to withdraw your money?

If you receive payment in instalments for 29 years, you would receive about $34 million years. So if you take out a total tax payment of about 40%

Do you think tax rate will remain constant at 40% for next 30 years?

I think this is a big misconception on your side. What if US government raises taxes for the elite class people to 50% or 60% in near future?

If that happen then more tax will be deducted from your annuity installments.

And if you take a one time lump sum then after paying the tax rate as of today, the remaining money will be in your pocket and under your control at once.

Both options are good. But if anything happens to the person like he died, will they continue to pay the guy family the money? But that also has disadvantages.

I will prefer to receive $450 million and pay the tax. If it is payment on installment, I will still pay the tax. I will prefer the lump sum. Both the two options are good.

Common $1 million is not a small amount money. If I receive $200 million, that is more than a life fortune for me.

I think this would heavily depend on your current situation especially if you factor your age.

Personally, I would take the installments as payment since I am confident enough to live the next years. Also, this would inure to my benefit greatly given that I would have control over my finances. This would also prevent me from spending EVERYTHING AT ONCE like what happened to most people who previously won the jackpot.

At the end of the day, it would really depend on your preference. Both options are good and if you can control/manage your resources well, then taking that lump sum would be the best bet for you to enjoy all the fruits of your luck.

Reading the replies, I see that the most dominant problem is the uncertainty of the instalment payment, and I understand it. You don't know if the company will continue to exist; you don't know if they will continue to be profitable; we don't know if they will continue to pay; we also don't know if the man will be alive for the next 30 years to receive his payments.  You can throw in inflation to the mix.

First of all, the Illinois Lottery is a 52-year-old lottery owned by the state of Illinois. So, there is a very high chance that they will continue to be in existence for the next 30 years.
Payments like that are paid to the account(s) provided during the signing of the deal, so even if the recipient dies, the money continues to go to the next of kin as stated in the contract.
I understand that there are too many variables, but if you receive $20 million after tax for 15 years, you have already received more than you would have gotten if you took the lump sum.

It is never that easy. Never. Profits are not so guaranteed,, and you would lose a lot of money trying to invest. You would also spend money on yourself, family and friends. In reality, you won't have over $200 million and still live the kind of life you lived when you were making $40k a year.
But if we are to assume it is that simple and straight foraward as you say, take out 30%- 40% tax fro every profit you make while making your calculations, depending on you live.

Should this be the only option? It doesn't make sense at all.

Will there be a tax on the money if received through a digital currency (BTC)?

To avoid complicated stories, I will choose the one-time payment if I'm left with just the two options in the article. This is to avoid a situation where the company folds after a few years. Also, no one knows how long we will live on Earth.

This is also a good idea that's if the casino can be able to pay at a time, but there are challenges and temptation that you might come across if such huge amount of money enter your account but if it can also be done in a way that people are not aware you might be save from the hands of kidnappers and also some family members might be keeping malis for you just because you won a big jackpot. The truth is that there are people who can't control this if it gets to them at once due to mismanagement so for me i think getting it on a small quantity will be good for some one who can manage funds properly.

Lumpsum amount makes more sense to me because we get the whole amount at once.
If we choose installment option, there's a possibility that we might not receive the entire amount in future for whatever reason it may be.
There will be a dependency on the casino to pay us and who knows if they go bankrupt or shutdown or die or may be die, we might not receive the amount receivable.

So better to go with lumpsum and then invest that amount that will generate us monthly payments.
Thus we will be able to enjoy regular income and also when we die our family members will get that amount after us.
I think this is the better option in this case.

Do you think tax rate will remain constant at 40% for next 30 years?
And there is no guarantee that the rules will remain constant, allowing you to withdraw your winnings in installments without additional red tape. A big win only truly counts as a win once it is actually in your hands; the alternative is a "floating" win. I would definitely choose the option of receiving the winnings in a lump sum.
