Since the launch announcement, FRIO has grown from a bare mainnet into a full ecosystem — multiple explorers, wallets on two platforms, a live network map, and a genuinely distributed set of nodes and mining pools. Here's what's new.
📱 NEW: Native Android walletA full open-source
Android wallet is now live.
- Lightweight SPV — verifies block headers and scans with BIP158 compact filters. No full node required; it syncs from FRIO's P2P network directly.
- Create or restore a 12-word recovery phrase, multiple deterministic frio1… receiving addresses.
- Send & receive FRIO, QR scanning, encrypted seed storage via the Android Keystore.
- Enforces the 100-confirmation coinbase-maturity rule so mined coins can't be spent early.
- Source + signed APK: github.com/Friotaioch/frio-android-wallet (see Releases).
🔍 NEW: Full mempool.space explorerFRIO now runs a complete
mempool.space instance at
mempool.friotaioch.com — the same interface Bitcoiners know, running natively on FRIO.
- Live mempool visualisation, real-time blocks, fee estimates, transaction and address lookups.
- Mining-pool attribution — blocks are tagged with the pool that found them, with logos. Current pools tagging blocks include Crypto-Eire, PythonPool, RODB, and Vexta Pool.
- Themed to FRIO, backed by the node + ElectrumX.
This runs alongside the original block explorer at
explorer.friotaioch.com — use whichever you prefer.
🌍 NEW: Live network mapA rotating 3D globe showing FRIO nodes worldwide, updated in real time from the node's live peer database:
friotaioch.com/nodes.html. The network is currently spread across
30+ nodes in roughly a dozen countries (IE, GB, US, DE, ES, FR, RU, CN, IS and more) — a real, decentralised topology, not a single-operator chain.
📄 NEW: Technical whitepaperA concise technical brief covering the motivation, the P2QR design, all six address types, chain parameters, and the browser-native signing model is now published:
friotaioch.com/whitepaper.pdf.
🔧 Node, network & tooling- Dedicated Tor node — FRIO now runs a hidden-service node and bridges clearnet ↔ onion, so you can run a node privately with no port-forwarding. Run-a-node guides for clearnet and Tor (Linux + Windows) are in Discord.
- Compact block filters (BIP158) enabled network-side, which is what makes the light Android wallet possible.
- DNS seeder + ElectrumX hardened and kept in sync with the chain.
- Explorer fixes: correct FRIO denomination throughout, ASERT-aware difficulty handling, full address-type parsing (all six types render), and ElectrumX-backed balance/history.
💻 Wallets — where things stand- Browser quantum wallet (wallet.friotaioch.com) — ML-DSA-65 signing runs entirely client-side in WebAssembly; the seed never leaves the page. Classic and quantum send/receive both working.
- Android wallet — SPV, standard SegWit, live (above).
- Desktop wallets (Windows + Linux) — built via CI.
⚙️ Chain parameters (unchanged)- Algorithm: SHA-256d proof-of-work · Base: Bitcoin Core v29 fork
- Difficulty: ASERT (aserti3-2d), per-block, anchored at genesis
- Target block time: 10 minutes
- Block reward: 50 FRIO, halving every 210,000 blocks · 21,000,000 cap
- Magic F710C0DE · P2P 51775 · RPC 51777 · HRP frio
- Genesis: 00000000908e647ce8296582a2d24023ef96a5e7d2320a5815b603463993676d
- No premine. Launched clean from its own genesis block.
🗺️ What's next- SPHINCS+ (v3) signing in the browser wallet (built; pending UI).
- Quantum-address support in the Android wallet.
- Security review of the browser signing path before it's recommended for real value.
- More pools, more nodes, more countries on the map.
Honest positioning (still holds)FRIO is an experiment, presented as one — a specific pairing of ML-DSA and SPHINCS+ on a SHA-256d PoW base, with browser-native and mobile wallets, built and verified in the open by a solo developer. The post-quantum signing paths
have not undergone a formal security audit. Use throwaway amounts, expect rough edges, and report what breaks. Never share your recovery phrase — no one on the team will ever ask for it.
