I don't fully understand for sure. But I'm happy if they request audits for everyone involved with the Bitcoin ecosystem. Hopefully, this audit can provide a sense of security. Basically, any weaknesses or gaps found can be fixed immediately. So in the end, every user feels safe and comfortable using it. The hope is not just because of Cordcard and then this audit stops. The hope is that audits always exist and continue to be conducted because technology keeps evolving and is ongoing, and audits also continue. But will this audit be approved by the developers? They should feel happy because it helps them in developing their software. IMO

Core Lightning will release a new update soon. They suggest that all users update their software to the latest release after verifying the signature of the binaries. Those who don't want to or can't do it for some reason, should take their nodes offline. They don't recommend shutting nodes down. When they are offline, nodes won't have connections to other peers and can't route payments.
They aren't saying what's been discovered but it's safe to assume that it's significant. They will only release details to the public after a two-weeks waiting period. I guess the idea is to give users enough time to upgrade without the vulnerabilities being publicly available knowledge that can be further abused against the users.

I’m surprised this situation hasn’t gotten more attention. Is it because nobody uses the Lightning Network or are people not wanting to bring attention to this critical vulnerability? Coldcard got a designated news announcement on the forum header after the hack. You’d think devs encouraging an emergency shutdown would be newsworthy.

There are no much details in this warning for us to judge how serious the vulnerability is, that's what I think. However, that's not a reason to not take the warning serious. Running LN noded comes with the responsibility of keeping it maintained, I'm surprised that not much is been said about the development. Waiting until the technical details are public may be too late.

What a nasty quarter for open source projects relating to Bitcoins Well at least the vulnerabilities was found before it was exploited There are no much details in this warning for us to judge how serious the vulnerability is, that's what I think.
Well The more information they share The more information bad actors would have to work with in looking for the bug Since a patch hasn't been shared hence why going offline is adviced.

Using artificial intelligence to identify vulnerabilities is becoming widely used. The Bitcoin Red Team is doing a good job of identifying these potential attacks and issuing notices. After the ColdCard incident, the team discovered 85 critical and 635 high-severity issues across different open-source projects.
I don't see the news in most crypto news outlets that I am subscribed to. Maybe it's not too serious or people have not lost so much money because of the vulnerability. The news would have gone viral if people have lost substantial amounts.

LND runs over 90%+ of public Lightning nodes. Core Lightning runs most of the rest. There are a couple of other implementations that just about nobody uses. If there was a major lose your funds thing going on with LND I would expect a lot more screaming and announcements. Not saying it's not a major thing, just looking at how big it is and how much BTC is in Core Lightning nodes vs. coldcard. The entire lightning network has about 2,700 BTC stored in it. If CLN does have 10% that puts 270 BTC in total at risk. Yes it's a big number. But nowhere near the ColdCard issue. -Dave

I'm not surprised no one is paying much attention to the news, and the reason is that people hardly use the internet. The comment on X isn't helping at all either. They call it AI attacks, and it's gonna increase as it has been found that the lighting network has more vulnerabilities than was generally known.

The Lightning Network was always an unnecessary attack vector for people’s Bitcoin. I’m surprised there are people willing to exchange their BTC for LBTC at an even exchange rate. Sort of shows me that they don’t understand they’re giving away security and sovereignty for free… Been in Bitcoin over 15 years, have done more than 20,000 BTC in transactions and have still never had a single request to accept or pay for something using the Lightning Network…

Drifting a bit OT but like many things it depends on your use case. You are not giving up sovereignty if you are running your own LN node, which for the most part with the nodes in a box so to speak is not difficult. For small amounts of money it's great, no waiting, no fuss, just scan a QR code and they have their sats just about instantly. More privacy since it's just about impossible to trace a lightning TX. If you don't mind giving up privacy with LNURL and Lightning Address you can do a lot of things. For real amounts of BTC it's a different story. But for $1.00 of BTC it's much easier to say send it to somename@somedomain.com-Dave

The 10% is the part that I wouldnot lean on. There are two distributions. node count and capacity. The number of sats is not a 90/10 split between all public nodes, but is determined by which implementation the few hundred large routing nodes run. The explorers decompose capacity into implementations and this can be checked not guessed. There are two other numbers that do not go into the 2700. That does not include private channels, and a CLN node's onchain wallet is not too. Neither is public. That doesn't tell you the exposure is big. the honest range is greater than 270 BTC both ways. Who has ever done the split by capacity?

It's also because with Coldcard you had drama, hundreds and thousands affected, a ton of material to write about, you had the company to balme , the thiefs, the victims , endless podcast material. With this, you have a vulnerability with not yet a single confirmed victim. Nobody is making an article about a truck that was about to crash but barely avoided it. I'm not surprised no one is paying much attention to the news, and the reason is that people hardly use the internet.
Where is that, Antarctica? Oh wait, everyone there uses the internet!

Who has ever done the split by capacity? Going with the assumption that people are following the instructions and taking their nodes offline, it's actually a smaller number then that. Less then 5% of the nodes that were active last week are offline now. Yes, I can probably do more looking into it, but I don't have the time. Just doing a quick and dirty count. Also, LN capacity has not dropped significantly so although not a great metric it's still something to do a bit of extrapolation from. And as @stompix said as far as anyone can tell nobody lost money. So we can make the assumption that people have taken their vulnerable nodes offline so the info should be somewhat accurate from that view. -Dave

Just like I predicted, and this is going to happen much more in future. More people now have access to different AI tools, and they are using them to find and exploit bugs in different projects. I would not keep anything in lightning network and big losses to happen soon in LN space.

Approximately nobody uses CLN. thought your comment is kinda funny because that quoted tweet got a half million views... which probably means 500 views for every actual user, and way more than typical bitcoin related tweets.

Not sure if this has been shared here, in any case, for those running it, this is a must read. https://x.com/callebtc/status/2092683963366064550This @callebtc is part of the Bitcon Red Team that come into fruition after the Cordcard hack. And he is a heading a major security audit of the Bitcoin ecosystem and reporting those vulnerabilities that they have found. This wouldn't be much of a concern, since almost nobody uses the Lightning Network. The vast majority of people are using on-chain Bitcoin. At least, AI is being put to good use by helping detect vulnerabilities before they're exploited. On the bright side, this makes the Lightning Network stronger and more resilient. I have noted a surge in vulnerabilities, ever since AI became a thing. Who knows what else is at risk? Other sidechains, maybe? Even the BitBox02 hardware wallet was affected. Anyhow, it's a good thing Blockstream addressed the issue promptly. It could've been worse, right?

As I posed it looks to be under 5%. But some people, probably masochists, do use it. -Dave
