Everytime we discuss about attacks, hacks, quantum computing and recently the hardware attacks. One this for us especially in Nigeria that is an attack vector to our asset is not a hacker sitting in some basement in Russia... It is one police officer that is standing at a checkpoint somewhere on the highway. E nor matter where you dey stay wether na Lagos or Abuja or port Harcourt, them dey everywhere. We know the usual format of park well. It's bad now that it not just people with cars that are victims. Even when you are in a commercial vehicle, when they see that you dress so well and look neat you have automatically become a target. Once they spot By it, Binance or anything crypto related in your phone, them go behind extort you. Threats of detention go just dey fly up and down and them go say you be yahoo bog and they won't let you go until you have settled them. This is a Type of attack too. So this thread is a discussion on how we can protect our assets from such. Most AppLock and second space are no longer reliable because these officers don wise. So some of the suggestions that are still effective against them are:
* Use a clean phone: If you are commuting to a place that is orobe to these stop and search, it is advisable to use a burner phone. You can swap your sims and use a phone that have nothing related to crypto in it. You can even use a button phone that cannot assess the internet. •Make use of a bait wallet: This one nor totally dey safe sha but you fit just use wallet wey be say na o ly like $5 or $10 dey inside .. this one na Incase them pressure you too much so that you fit show say everywhere red fir your side. • Browser only wallets: You can use browser only wallets especially on PC so you don't have to install any native wallet on your phone. No logins, no bookmark e t c they will not be able to find anything to hold you with. • Cold storage: Even with the current saga of cold storage breach, it is still one of your best bet to protect your asset. You dint have to carry it around, it can be in your house while your phone is free from any conventional crypto app.
These are just my few ideas. This is a discussion so more ideas are welcomed. We cannot be 100 % free from them, this is just a way of reducing the likelihood of extortion.
For the everyday P2P vendors among us, have you had any encounter recently, and how were you able to handle it abi you still Settle the boys.
Sincerely, I don't get you at all... Are you saying that as a Bitcoin investor for instance, and I haveade some Savings in my investment or nay other crypto assets, then police go hold me say wetin happen?? Dem dey mad? Unless say u dey tell us now say you be Yahoo boy, and e get things wey u dey do online wey no dey legit(internet fraudster). Normally, they will always come to molest you if they see you are well dressed. But because you are not a fraudster, you don't have to be afraid of them. What will they search for? You apps or what? I don't think one should fear is you are not a fraudster. Why will they threatem you for arrest, is crypto a crime? Or internet investment? You will only fear if you know you aren't pure. Wetin you talk get meaning but the country wey we dey, the police officers na bunch of criminals, they are ready to steal from you at any time of the day without sympathy or remorse. Na why em be sae, you gat to avoid them, not to bring up anything wey go make you and dem to exchange words for problem you supposed to avoid. I don read many scores for the Internet on how the police officers steal crypto assets from grown up men and women wey know their rights. They themselves bring up their matter for social media, what did they get at the end of everything? Nothing. These days for Nigeria, no be by who know pass or strong pass, everybody d comport themselves so that Nigeria no happen to them because if it happens, na that peso and their family loss so. Nigeria go continue to the move on, like nothing happen

The word clean phone looks like crypto is something bad, I think it is not supposed to be like that, but I understand your point, you should just try as much as possible to avoid putting yourself at risk by using all your wallets in your phone you always take around, even if these police men didn’t stop you for harassment, you can be tracked or rubbed on your way. Since we know that their harassment is always happening, we should just make sure we have fiat in our bank account and leave anything related to Bitcoin at home. Going around with your Bitcoin wallet you have your savings inside is the same thing as going everywhere with your bank and your investment, you can just be leaving them at home for security reasons; going around with your wallets in your device can sometimes be show up, you can use your browser to access your exchange if it warrants to avoid attack and harassment from them.

I think there is another layer here besides simply keeping the private keys off the phone. Although the actual Bitcoin may be held in a hardware wallet or other home device, the phone you carry with you can still give away a lot of information through exchange app, wallet balance, transaction history, P2P chats, screenshots or saved addresses.
The message should not just be “don't carry your wallet.” It should also be reducing the amount of information regarding your Bitcoin holdings that's available on the device you take with you.
A watch-only wallet can for instance have the balance but not the signing power, but this is still a big problem if the wallet is opened by someone. In this instance, minimizing the amount of information that is accessible on the travel phone will be just as significant as keeping the private keys off the phone.

Honestly the robbers we have now are not only the type that attack us with a gun pointed directly to our forehead, few weeks ago I traveled to my village I decided to visit because I have not visited in years and my parents are over there, I traveled through public transportation on our way it was almost like every 5 to 10 meters away are checkpoints and the sad thing is that fact that in every checkpoint they will not let the drivers go until he offers them money, the annoying part is if you give them any amount they are not satisfied with they will not let you drive pass, few years back it was about checking guys phone during that period lots of guys in my country was arrested and their money was taken from them due to false accusations by the police officers.
Whenever I see the one's without a name tag on their shirt, i get scared cause they can successfully harass you and get away with it, sometimes i feel to set of armed security officers on the highway are criminals cause tell me why security officers would be without a tag, don't their superiors in office hear about such informations and try to address them? I watched a video about how a guy was harassed by some policemen after showing them complete papers and every required thing a driver should have but they still try to extort him and when he refused they forcely took his phone and asked him to open it else he'll be shot, what helped him recognize those criminal officers was that he was putting on a glass with camera, I think everybody needs one in case of situations like police brutality.

It is important to make the difference between random and targeted attack because the defense no go be the same. If na an unknown police officer to you, then it is a random attack. They don't know anything about you, so for this kind situation you can come with a clean phone or hidden wallet, because they are not likely to investigate deeply since they don't even know if you get crypto or not. •Make use of a bait wallet: This one nor totally dey safe sha but you fit just use wallet wey be say na o ly like $5 or $10 dey inside .. this one na Incase them pressure you too much so that you fit show say everywhere red fir your side.
For attacks that are somehow targeted, this one na where the bait wallet method make more sense. The problem with a targeted attack be say the police officer already knows that you have crypto somehow, maybe somebody evil don tell them about you. So if you show up with a clean phone and pretend say you don't know anything about crypto, that one fit even cause more problems and make them check you deeper. So having a small bait wallet is probably the better approach because you can show them this one and say na everything you get on your phone. If na only $5 or $10 dey there, there isn't much they can do with it. It is like having a passphrase to your seed words, they can't know that you have another wallet somewhere it is not possible.

You can as well have two phones separately that you don't go out with your work phone. The whole idea is to present yourself as a normal Nigerian wey no dey see front with crypto so you go blend well into the public and have your peace unless you want to they settle people wey no follow you hustle steadily.

There are times we need to be smarter than we may think; holding your Bitcoin in a non-custodial wallet is a perfect means, and you also don't have to let people know that you are mostly into cryptocurrency. Most of these kinds of attacks show a clue about what we do or who we are, especially when we are more buoyant about expressing our involvement in crypto, and they could easily detect that you definitely have money they will extort from, even the police or any other paramilitary personnels and not excluded to be corrupt.

The actual truth is that, make we try to live a modest lifestyle wey go make use look responsible, because the lifestyle and our appearance dey easily attract this evil police officers to harass us on the way, because you cannot be too careful enough.
I know say most of this measures wey you talk of dey very good and e go help to an extent, but if you dress responsible, and you live a modest lifestyle wey no go drag this people come for where you dey, no be bad thing na? Because young boys of nowadays are something else, that's why these police officers dey harass any young man wey dress like mafian for road as a yahoo boy, even though you no be one. So make we try dress responsible, because our appearance go help us avoid such harassment from these police people.

If you have money, get a lawyer, make sure you pay your taxes. If any of the police try to do something that is not in your favour, do not fear.
If the police is not cooperating, let him know that you want to record him with your phone and start recording and let him know that you have done nothing wrong and that your work is legit. Do not fight them but be very bold that you know your right.
If the police want to search your phone, ask the police of their search warrant and if they want to arrest you? Because searching someone's phone means they have been authorized to do so, but most police are only abusing it.
But sending a police to go and arrest someone as a target is different. Police do so because they are suspecting the person already that he is doing something not good like Yahoo Yahoo, but not the police you see on the road side that stopped you. I know what I can do to just let them leave me alone.
Always be polite with them.
About the phone, why will anyone be carrying his crypto phone about? What if it is not even police but thieves that can force the person to hand over his coins.
What you're saying sounds good on paper, but.....hmmm, no be so e dey o. I have a cousin who was held by police men. They pestered him to give them some money, he said no! Trying to rub shoulders . They threw him into the van, took him to another community, went into the bush, and then they started threatening him. At that point, my guy was scared for his life o. Omo, he had to make call for them to send money to give these guys o. Another of my friend was held in a bolt, the bolt driver stopped, they asked the bolt driver to drive to a remote place, they told my friend to start making transfers that he is a yahoo boy, he had to oblige despite not being a yahoo boy, because at that point, my guy don fear die—he's the first person that introduced me to crypto and web3. Omo, it's not as simple as we think it is o, they probably might not kill you, but the fear alone ehn, and the gun, guy....just give them something if you have o.

Any police that did all these to me are just in trouble, all they can do is to take me to their nearest station which I will prefer. They can easily use that to know me that I am not a Yahoo person and I will be confident in speaking, but no police has ever done that to me and I am driving car. The way you speak with them matters a lot and make sure you are not afraid of them but be polite. I know my right, they can easily know from the way I speak. Their work is to only demand for my driver's and vehicle's license and of which I have both. If they want to search my car, they can as I always allow them. They still stopped me yesterday, they told me to pull over.

Although I've never had any personal experience with police harassments before but I've seen a few times where they have harassed some young guys and really ruffled them for no just cause, we ordinary Nigerians will just be observing from a distant because nobody wants to carry another person's cross. My observation is that these young guys were sagging with crazy hairstyles and they carrying laptop backpacks, so I believe that these are some of the things that attracts these corrupt policemen to victimize these young guys.
If policemen stops you in isolated areas kindly cooperate with them, you can raise alarm later on social media but at the point of extorting you don't argue so much with people that are carrying guns, e get why. But if you're in a public and busy place that is when you can argue and claim your rights so far you're not into criminal activities.

Always be polite with them.
After being polite to be sure of what they want, Omo let dem no say you go record una activities there because the IG don instruct say make dem comot body. In fact make you record dem you go see say dem go avoid you. However, make person dey sure say na for day time oo and for road wey motorist dey pass. If na for night, just obey and sort things out with them because Dem fit go extra mile to intimidating you and anything can happen. Just avoid night movement.
About the phone, why will anyone be carrying his crypto phone about? What if it is not even police but thieves that can force the person to hand over his coins.
This advise good but most times na Yahoo guys dey keep their "baddest" phone for house because of the things wey dem don install inside. But we also need to guide our phones incase of theft. We suppose dey lock our sim and put extra securities for our email, password, passphrase etc

You dint have to carry it around, it can be in your house while your phone is free from any conventional crypto app.
About cold storage, that one is non-negotiable, I cannot bear carrying the bulk of my bitcoin around, anyone serious about self-custody must use a cold storage in this country or a hardware wallet at least. About phones, honestly it's better these officers don't see the apps at all, one time they saw Binance in my phone and insisted that I open it, but as a guyman I've logged out of my main account and was logged into a second account with little funds and they were naïve and didn't even look at the TX history before letting me go About the phone app stuff, it's better they don't see it. Browser wallets are risky and I wouldn't ask someone to keep funds there. Those that use Redmi products from Redmi 10 upwards have a unique advantage, I will not spill the beans in public, if you're interested to know hoe to use the double face of Redmi products to hide your financial apps anytime you want, send a DM and I will reveal it to you, I found it out while exploring with my note13 .

It's not like we can't have those things on our phones because crypto is not illegal. But to avoid delays, maybe arguing with the armed forces, it is better to hide those apps. For example, I don't go out with the device that has my crypto holdings. The few altcoins I have, I hide them on a device always kept at home. About now, I read the second paragraph. We are actually on the right track. Public harassment is not the only danger that can happen. Imagine the officers sit you in a silent location. The officers are corrupted that they can do whatever they feel like to you and take all the crypto in the wallet. Going about with our crypto holdings can cause loss of life, not just the crypto holdings.

I understand and I know everything our people are passing when it comes to how we are being treated out there, and we are in the same page because I also said that if you keep any related crypto wallet in a device you don’t take around with you anytime, you can be safe from both police or any force that will stop to search you, or armed robbery because it is possible. Notwithstanding, knowing our rights I also there even though we know that some officers don’t also know their rights and rights don’t work well in Nigeria, but we can still claim our rights in such situations and get them because some of these officers are also out there illegally without proper authorization, taking some of these cases publicly will also put them in a very big problem because they are also not acting on their right. But to be safe, always keep your wallets in a device you keep at home for your wallets safety because you can also lost it by mistake.

I don't think you understand the way things go now. Na wetin I don experience up to 3 times this year alone. All the time I'm on my way to school with my bag and my official outfit but them go still stop... 2 times they stopped Keke because of me and na only me them search and nor be say I dey drip like that. I'm speaking based in experience and I know of two other victims. They did not even allow one if them to explain they just tagged him a yahoo boy for the fact that he had crypto asset and he was driving a benz. He had to bail himself before they allowed him to go. I live in a student environment and a lot of people have experienced it Omo no be like say I no understand wetin you dey talk ooo and the situation of things in the country. How those people who are supposed to be the upholders of the law to protect lives and properties are now using it to extort and do other criminal acts. But to the best of my knowledge, doing crypto related businesses is not yet a crime in this country. So I don’t need to be hiding anything as if I’m doing something illegal, that’ll even make you look suspicious. The thing na make you know your rights and be bold when any police officer wan do any fishy business, no do like say you dey fear or anything. I’ve had encounters with them but nothing come out.

Honestly, the last time i heard of such was in the administration of the imidiate ex president, then the government wasn't too friendly with cryptocurrency as this and the authorities decided to take advantage of youths who were involved in cryptocurrency but it cooled off so it's suprising to hear that they're still harassing people for using cryptocurrency in 2026. Your suggestion is nice but i think people shouldn't go about with the devices they use for cryptocurrency trading or Bitcoin investment amd keep their involvement with it a secret so they don't get set up with criminals that would disguise themselves as police officers.

Well I have encountered them several times, but they are yet to take my phone and start looking for what they didn't keep. Still anything can happen, and an event like that is one that you can't predict. Basically police checkpoints often change so the chances of meeting them on the road can be unexpected.Still i think you are right the society is getting every single individual mixed up in the idea that if you are putting on good clothes, good shoes, you are a Yahoo boy. But that is to show the level of poor mentality that the Nigerian police has. Still we can't rule out the fact that when you know you are innocent, you often mentain your cool. That's just a way of reducing any unnecessary suspicion because there is no point in trying to prove yourself it would only give them more advantage in trying to know what doesn't concern them.thats all.....

For the everyday P2P vendors among us, have you had any encounter recently, and how were you able to handle it abi you still Settle the boys.
Sometimes I dey wonder if police want everybody to become poor. If you drive fine car or dress well, you don become target. Abi dem want all of us to dey suffer, wear rag and dey trek. The people I dey pity na people way dey engage in crypto transactions every time such as traders. But for people wey be long-time hodlers, their matter soft. Na to keep everything wey concern crypto for house. This na the best option. The annoying fact is the exercise this authority majorly on the youths whom they feel they can manipulate and subject the whatever conditions they come up with. One has to be extra careful with their transactions. Personally I haven't had an encounter with them majorly because I go out very casual and I give them no reason to search me except I have a function to attend in which I do my best to book a ride just to avoid unnecessary intimidation from them.

This na serious matter oh, despite say no be internet attack, this na physical attack way be say go fit happen to anybody at any time. Mostly, this one way police for checking point go wan access your phone for no reason. I de reason am say, upon use of crypto wallets and any form of crypto activity for Naija, it is better say person get two devices, be it phone or laptop, make e be say na one be flexing phone for pictures and all that, while the other one go need de house for everything crypto and big financial activities/transactions.
I come across one OS for mobile phones, called GrapheneOS, by description from a video I watched, person way de use this OS come de in a police harassment situation, and Police say make em bring em phone, as the guy give am the phone, police click the power button, na everything way de the phone wipe off clean. The police say nothing de d phone, why em give am phone way nothing de, na matter take burst.
