Bitcoin discussions usually focus on price, adoption, and market cycles.

But what do you think gives Bitcoin its strongest long-term value: decentralization, scarcity, security, utility, or something else?
Well If we are keeping the price aside, then we can only take out scarcity from the things you've mentioned, because the rest contribute in its overall value as an asset or a currency. It gives you the power of managing everything independently without involving any third-party because it's decentralized. It has great security because attackers and hackers can hack into wallets and systems where people keep their assets by finding loopholes, but they can't hack into the blockchain itself or do anything through that, so it's pretty secure as a network, and when it comes to the security of your funds, it all depends on how you keep your assets secure, because if you do a good job at that, no one can reach them.

Lastly, utility is one of the strongest in the list, because since its decentralized, there will never be problems such as someone blocking a transaction you have made for some reason just like how banking channels do, there is no one to block your account and keep your funds locked if you use non-custodial services and have self-custody of your assets, and there is no limit on how much money you can hold or send as long as you can manage all that yourself and won't mess everything up. I think this is one of the most beautiful things about Bitcoin as a whole, and this is surely going to be a very strong long-term value for Bitcoin.
The self-custody part is what makes Bitcoin different for me. It changes the relationship you have with your money because you’re not just holding an asset, you’re responsible for controlling it yourself. That kind of financial independence is hard to replicate with traditional systems.

I don't understand what you meant by price makes Bitcoin more valuable, hope you don't mind making me understand what you meant by that or do you mean scarcity? However, the OP wasn't talking about what gets people's attracted to Bitcoin but what makes Bitcoin valuable so if your reason for mentioning price is cause people are adopting it cause it's becoming valuable then you're misunderstanding the point of discussion.

I think he is saying that Bitcoin is valuable because you can see it from the price and people are still buying at this price. A Bitcoin is worth $80k but you can see people are willing to buy it here, that is to tell you that even at this price, it's cheap to them and they think that in few years to come, the price will go higher not minding the amount they are spending but to an average person, that price might be expensive to them because they don't have it.

There are many reasons as to why Bitcoin is very valuable, but of all the ones, some are subjective. The most important and recognized of them all is the scarcity. Bitcoin has just 21m and the world is more than billions. If we compare the population of the world that recognizes investment, then the Bitcoin price is undervalue. If everyone decide to buy Bitcoin today, the price will be unbelievable.

For me another factor here is we are now shifting into web3 and most of the web now have their own wallet and access to connect to a platform so basically most of the cryptocurrency tokens will be use now depends on the network and of course they cant neglect of having bitcoin to be part of it like it has a limited number of supply and there is a demand reason for there is a market volatility price goes up and down so beside an investment this could be use for payment in goods and services and you can transact a large amount without having KYC.

Yeah, the utility side is definitely important. I also think Bitcoin’s fixed supply is what makes its role different from most other tokens. Do you think its payment use will grow alongside its use as a store of value?

This is an excellent question: I believe that each of the concepts listed gives Bitcoin its unique character, but together they add up in an amazing way. It turns out that this simple, uncomplicated mechanism of Bitcoin is truly unique and is a breakthrough in our time, and that’s why I think Bitcoin is special and awesome: as a technological invention, as a financial instrument with a limited supply, and as a means of transferring assets. In short, it has so many advantages and absolutely no disadvantages, except for the somewhat high technical entry barrier.

I agree that the combination is what makes Bitcoin unique. The technical barrier is probably one of the biggest things that needs to improve if we want more people to actually use it, not just hold it.

As a thought experiment, imagine there was a base metal as scarce as gold but with the following properties:
- boring grey in colour
- not a good conductor of electricity
- not particularly strong, but not ductile or easily malleable either
- not useful for any practical or ornamental purpose

and one special, magical property:
- can be transported over a communications channel

If it somehow acquired any value at all for whatever reason, then anyone wanting to transfer wealth over a long distance could buy some, transmit it, and have the recipient sell it.

Maybe it could get an initial value circularly as you've suggested, by people foreseeing its potential usefulness for exchange.  (I would definitely want some)  Maybe collectors, any random reason could spark it.

I think the traditional qualifications for money were written with the assumption that there are so many competing objects in the world that are scarce, an object with the automatic bootstrap of intrinsic value will surely win out over those without intrinsic value.  But if there were nothing in the world with intrinsic value that could be used as money, only scarce but no intrinsic value, I think people would still take up something.

(I'm using the word scarce here to only mean limited potential supply)

These are the words of Satoshi.

My take on this post would be the same, because unlike Satoshi, who did not know, what the price of BTC would be in 2026, I know, so I will say that random reason could be scarcity. Although I might be wrong, scarcity is what worked for me. In 2018, I heard about BTC and then left without studying, but here on this forum I learned about halving and fixed supply, how demand is increasing, and due to halving, the supply is getting cut. So I was like, if there is more demand than the supply and the supply is even fixed and cannot be increased then this is something worth holding. I did not care about regulators because I am sure anyone who was here knew what they were doing.

I think Bitcoin posseses other valuable qualities apart from it's price appreciation, and increases, and one of the valuable things is decentralization. Bitcoin is not controlled by any individual, not satoshi, and not the government of any nation. Every Bitcoin holder is entirely in control of their asset, and uses it the way they seem fit. After the creation of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto disappeared, and remained anonymous till date. This is unlike other cryptocurrencies, and even some of the top cryptocurrencies we know their creators, and they have reasonable quantities for themselves. The scarcity of Bitcoin is another thing that makes Bitcoin to be very unique, and can not be altered by anyone. Bitcoin has gained so much trust from investors across the globe because of of it's originality in the cryptocurrency market, and because it not controlled by anyone all the qualities of Bitcoin remains intact without any changes.

Bitcoin's fixed price really gives Bitcoin an advantage, but I do not think that it is the most important reason why  Bitcoin is valuable beyond its price.  It is the decentralized, immutability, and transparency that actually give Bitcoin more value beyond its price.  Being able to control and send our funds without any third-party mediation gives us lots of freedom in how we want to use our money.

There is no fear of our money being frozen or being seized because they have no control over our funds.  They cannot intercept our transactions as banks do.  I think this is what makes Bitcoin more valuable than its price.

If you ask me to choose just one of the things you mentioned, it will be difficult for me. Because the core strength of Bitcoin is all the features you mentioned working together. Just because something has a limit of 21 million, it does not automatically become valuable. If a government or institution could change the rules of Bitcoin if they wanted, then perhaps there would be no trust in this limited supply. Again, even if it is decentralized, if there were no fixed rules of supply, then not everyone would accept Bitcoin as a strong long-term asset. Therefore, my personal opinion is that the features you mentioned are related to each other. None is less important.

Well decentralization. Scarcity and security matter, but they only mean something because no one controls Bitcoin. If one group could change the rules or supply, it’d just be another asset. Utility is secondary too. The strongest long-term value is that it’s neutral, scarce, and you can hold it yourself.

Decentralization is what gives many people reason to invest in bitcoin and the reason that we don’t need any authorization from any body is what makes it more interesting and eye tempting to people. Another most important reason that attracts people into bitcoin aside the decentralization is the volatility. The power bitcoin has to increase and decrease over time serves as a benefits to those that invest because they can come to see their holdings increasing in price, so this also is a big reason that lure in some people into bitcoin aside just the decentralization alone. People are so crazy about bitcoin and the benefits it offer and this alone adds more value to bitcoin.

When someone have freedom of what he get and have control over it, you will always have the courage to hold it, and that is the main thing why everyone that knows about bitcoin and have the knowledge will always see the value of it, and the decentralization as makes everything clear and make crypto investors have clear intentions to hold there coin well, because they won’t have any scared of losing there funds, except the one that keep is private key in a public place to make others to access it. Bitcoin will always be the best, because people are more seeing it as a long term goal. And the value won’t decrease.

Bitcoin's use as a means of payment may increase in the future, but right now it may not increase as a means of payment. Because we are currently seeing a lot of volatility in the Bitcoin market and the price of Bitcoin is going down and up at the moment, right now no one would want to use Bitcoin as a means of payment and I would definitely call anyone who does that a fool. Because the amount of Bitcoin I am transacting now could be very valuable in the future and the possibility of it being valuable is much higher.

If in the future we ever see every person accepting Bitcoin, then Bitcoin's volatility will definitely decrease a lot compared to the present. Then maybe we will see Bitcoin being used as a means of payment or Bitcoin's use as a means of payment may increase

Everyone have there own perception and that is why I feel in situations like this we can only speak for pur selfs and the price doesn't really matters what I feel matters the most is the buying of the bitcoin it self because that way you know you have an asset something that can go up, people know what they are doing and they know what they want and this is part of the reasons why I said different reasons for wanting to own a bitcoin and the name bitcoin alone is not a joke just imagine been part of does holding a multi-billion dollar investment. And no one wants to be left behind because I feel like seen the kind of potential that bitcoin has everyone will definitely want to be part of it.

So many people actually have different reasons for wanting to have or own bitcoin, and it is not always about the current price, that want to make them go into in every one has a different reason have see a friend where he’s own reason is simply owning a small amount and being part of the Bitcoin ecosystem is what actually matters to him and i to me personally I fell those who don’t have basic knowledge about bitcoin and how it works should avoid buying it just because they are afraid of being left behind yes bitcoin is good and has potential, but it also comes with a big risk, so everyone should understand what they are getting themselves into and only put in what they can afford.

There is nothing wrong with someone wanting to use bitcoin for payment.

Like guy below said, everybody sees it their own way. Bitcoin's flexible financial tool and people can use it for whatever they want. No need to be so quick to judge someone just because they do not have same goal or way of thinking as us.

Dont forget Satoshi created Bitcoin as a p2p electronic cash system, not some speculative asset. So people who still use Bitcoin for payment despite the volatility arent fools. They're simply using Bitcoin for one of purposes it was created for.

The fact that people can spend bitcoin easily to anybody who owns a wallet and there needs to be no change on this process if the person has any specific problems either, is the thing that seperates it from another.

The major thing that fiat lacks is this decentralization and censorship resistance which is still not present in any other fiat mode of transaction.

An after effect is that the long term value or stored value in fiat is increasing over time. This is what made it popular over time.
