Bitcoin has no CEO or formal central authority. But software development inevitably involves people who have more influence than ordinary users. Bitcoin core is extremely important because the software determines which blocks and transactions a node considers valid. Bitcoin.org itself says users running Bitcoin core independently enforce the rules. And the Bitcoin developer documentation explicitly acknowledges that Bitcoin's security depends on the behavior of software maintaining consensus.
Does it mean that developers control Bitcoin? If yes, How we call it as decentralized?

Now I will like you to answer a question base on your research who can run Bitcoin Core?
It is decentralized, Consensus is different from centralization. Those who run Bitcoin Core are not just devs, it is always open to all. Every decision is based on voting/agreement which is consensus.

Running a BTC node is not reserved for any specific individual or group, anybody can run a BTC node, validate BTC tx's and contribute to the network through enforcing the consensus rules. Does it mean that developers control Bitcoin? If yes, How we call it as decentralized?
No, developers do not control BTC. Yeah, a developer can propose an improvement to the rules, but it does not mean that it would be accepted by the vast majority of the network, which includes nodes, miners, BTC users, etc. The failure of BIP-110 is a good example of this, and it failed because a greater number of the community were against it.

You must know about BIPs, what are they? Developers can program and make their BIPs but it's not enough. Whether a BIP is supported enough by Bitcoin community, Bitcoin nodes, it will decide that BIP success or failure, success means Bitcoin chain will move next with that BIP or that BIP will only make a fork. Lately you can see example from failures of BIP 110. https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2026/08/09/controversial-bitcoin-fork-bip-110-mines-two-blocks-then-stops

Op, you're probably mistaking influence of Bitcoin developers for centralized control. If you don't know, Bitcoin Core developers can only write code, suggest changes as well as release new versions however, that does not mean that they can force every node on the network to run that code. It is still each node operator that'll will decide what software and rules they're cool to accept, so it's safe to say that no developer possess the authority to decide what the entire Bitcoin network must accept. That's why Bitcoin is still decentralized even when it's obvious that developers are also humans.

The decentralization of Bitcoin is not only from developments of the project but also from its network operation like mining hash rate, node distribution because these operational factors are important for Bitcoin blockchain from decentralization, security to transaction confirmation and censorship resistance. You will understand more about this by reading this https://blog.lopp.net/how-many-bitcoin-confirmations-is-enough/And look at a calculator for 51% attacks against Bitcoin blockchain. https://jlopp.github.io/bitcoin-confirmation-risk-calculator/In blockchain security, Bitcoin is the best https://howmanyconfs.com/

No, developers do not control Bitcoin. The work of developers is to secure and strengthen the bitcoin network using different computer algorithms to solve any problems or bugs that might arise. The activity of bitcoin developers and miners do not mean that they can interfere with any transactions. When you send a transaction, the work of miners is just to include it in the next block and it get confirmed. They don't know who sent the coin and who is receiving the coin and they can't also omit any transactions from the Blockchain so bitcoin itself remains decentralised.

Bitcoin is decentralized, and so is Bitcoin Core open-source. Open source means that anyone can be a developer, you don't need permission or approval from anybody, as long as you have a satisfactory level of knowledge about blockchain technology, coding, and all you need to acquire, you can actually be part of the Bitcoin developers supporting the network.

Having more influence does not mean centralization as long as the core values of Bitcoin is not violated. They are what make Bitcoin decentralized. By the way, core developers are under constant checks, if they go against the core values, nodes can refuse to join them by running core alternative to enforce the core values, this automatically makes them the new core while the old is treated as an attacker and possibly become obsolete. And you don't need majority of nodes to enforce the values, since Bitcoin doesn't work like typically democracy. What you need are honest nodes

I won't dispute the fact developers do have influence since they are the one that is in charge of maintenance and developing of bitcoin software, but this is different from having control over bitcoin. A developer can introduce a change but it is left for the person running the node to acknowledge or decline such changes. They have a choice to stick with the older version if the new changes doesn't go well with them. This is one thing that makes bitcoin different from a centralised system. Developer has the right to introduce new rule but it is left for the users whether to accept it or not. Full node doesn't depends on new rules that is set by a developer to verify it's block and transaction but only on the rules it accepts. Therefore, developer may have a big role to play in bitcoin, but bitcoin network is decentralised and not centralised because developers only suggest rules and it is within the users right to decline or accept it.

The open source in bitcoin made it decentralized power for effective because no single core developer can create or change the rules independently, no matter they harshrate power. Bitcoin core developers are not not Bitcoin supper head government, they are just vendors who's choice can be opposed by other actors, this make Bitcoin decentralization more powerful than any set individuals or organisation. Main actors. 1: developers 2: minners 3: independent nodes operators 4: then bitcoin community meaning the users.

You miss important factor, Bitcoin protocol that requires decentralized consensus. Without it, developers can centralize many things and Bitcoin will be very different than what it has been since 2009. The fourth factor: Bitcoin users can contribute in running Bitcoin full nodes, contribute to the blockchain but if there are no existence of other factors, users can not do too much. Like you can be Ethereum Classic users but that blockchain was attacked 51% several times, you could not do anything to stop that. https://decrypt.co/40196/hackers-launch-third-51-attack-on-ethereum-classic-this-month

One thing I will point out is that developers control the codes they write not the nodes that can run it. Nodes are the ones that enforce the rules. Anybody can choose to run any Bitcoin client or choose not to update a prior one.
Take developers as giving proposals while Full nodes choose to accept or neglect them. Though there are part of the bitcoin system that are centralized or becoming more centralized But consensus wise it still remains decentralized.

I'll argue that node operators even have more influence than the developers. Bitcoin core devs can run the code but they cannot decide the node will run the software because all nodes are independent.
Again, the chances that all developers will become evil simultaneously is very low. So even if some group of developers become evil, since bitcoin is open source, there are still other developers that will review and oppose their controversial proposals. We've already seen this in practice in the chain splits of Bcash and Bitcoin, as well as the recent luke Jnr BIP110 shitcoin. It shows that even well known developers cannot influence bitcoin. So I view your premises as fallacy.

What do you consider as influencer? I'm confused as to why you called Bitcoin core developers as influencers. They are not your regular type of people that comes online to tell you want they do and how it should be. Everything you seen Bitcoin core has developers has pushed is based on the implementation of Satoshi from day, there is nothing there that has been compromised nor done for their benefits, none of the updates are pushed without influence of the community, they all have improvement proposal accepted by the community. Bitcoin is a an open source, you are free to contribute what you want and how you think core should work, if the community accept your proposal it will get accepted as fast as possible, and if it's the usual to respect your ego, that will not be tolerated. By the way, if core developers are influencers, what do you call other developers like Knot? Evil cult?

That we have a number of developers, miners and other Bitcoin cypherpunks does not change anything than to see Bitcoin being aligned to the network protocol, none of them could do anything outside the contacts at which the Bitcoin network is being designed to operate, all these medics difficult for 51% attack to be possible because the hashrate distribution is globally and nothing is made centralized regarding the use of Bitcoin network.

The truth is that developers doesn't control Bitcoin, they only develop figures, which can be implies as codes and also update it to function appropriately, but they don't have the power to impose it to anyone...For the aspects of decentralized...Bitcoin is decentralized, indencies that it doesn't have any control from any authority by the government of any kind, that's why bitcoin is called a decentralized...but assuming government have authority over the control of bitcoin, we can't boldly said, is a decentralized currency..

I think the key difference is influence vs. control. Developers can propose and implement changes in bitcoin core, but they can't force every node to run those changes.... Users decide which software and rules they accept, while their nodes independently validate blocks and transactions.
So developers have significant influence, yes, but that doesn't mean they control bitcoin, no one controls it. The decentralization comes from the fact that no single developer or group can unilaterally change the rules for everyone. And its network is fully decentralized.

Bitcoin is decentralized but it's decentralization does not mean that Bitcoin Core developers have zero influence over it, that's probably where you're getting it all mixed up.
For Bitcoin network to continue running, someone has to maintain and improve the software that's why developers are there.
However, just like it's been stated by other people under this thread, not all their changes must be accepted by the network. It's still the users and node operators that decide on what software and rules they want to run.
So basically, developers have influence but their influence is limited and doesn't take away Bitcoin's decentralization.
