This is the reality here in my country. Or it's probably even worse because while there are increases, salaries still can't catch up with the rising prices of goods and services.

The prices of goods and services, the weakening of the purchasing power of money, is much faster than salary growth. So, it's possible many are getting poorer despite having bigger salaries.

Your financial well-being isn't measured by how much you receive; it's measured by your specific needs and whether your salary can fully support it. Meaning, it's not how much you receive but how much it can buy you.

People dont like to give up the status quo of the current lifestyle they adopt. For example if a person drives a car to work everyone one city and has ro move to another city where they could not bring their car, they will find travelling on public transport something demeaning. This nature needs to be changed if the person wants to save, use public transport for a few months till the car is brought back.

However being flexible helps a lot in such situations and even though this example might seem like a simple issue, unless it happens to someone in real life they will not realize it.

Hemce as inflation goes up, start to settle in a quiet life, minimal to no subscription, less vehicle use and healthy food should be adopted.

It begs the question, is increased income really a good measure of financial progress?

If your income keeps increasing but the things you need also keeps becoming more expensive, are you getting richer, or you're simply earning more money to maintain the same lifestyle?

Increased income is obviously a sign of good financial progress. And yes, the daily essentials and basic utilities have been increasing rapidly as well. The inflation could probably make your increased income feels like it was nothing if you're not careful with how you handle your lifestyle.
Now, if you want to become rich, whatever unnecessary lifestyle you currently have, you must reduce them to save some money. Because if you're earning good but it feels like still not enough, as you're still maintaining the same lifestyle, then I guess it's time for you to change your it.
Maintain a lifestyle where you can always see some spare for savings.

Earning more money and being financially comfortable are two different situation in the present day global economy. that you are earning more than your previous salary doesn't always mean you're financially better off.

In reality, Someone can move from earning $500 to $1,000 a month and still feel like nothing really changed. the reason in most cases is that Rent also increases, food costs more, transportation gets more expensive, and suddenly that extra $500 doesn't feel like much anymore.

It begs the question, is increased income really a good measure of financial progress?

If your income keeps increasing but the things you need also keeps becoming more expensive, are you getting richer, or you're simply earning more money to maintain the same lifestyle?

People, who make ends meet by getting paid for their time and effort are not rich. Only the business owners and investors are rich.
Your income streams should not be dependent on how many hours you put in on a daily basis. Building a real business and leveraging other people's work can make you truly wealthy. Making your money work for you 24/7 can also make you truly rich. Being an employee means that you will never escape the "rat race" and your salary is always going to be devalued by inflation.

You should buy expensive things if you need them, I have expensive things too and that's that, it doesn't mean that I will buy another expensive thing this month and next month.

People forget to live and that's the problem, you gathered all the money you can and you are restricting yourself from spending, don't forget that if you die today someone else will spend everything like it's nothing.

Someone I know lost his life on this Monday and it was on that day on his death bed he knew that he has no one, he had to entrust his only daughter into the hands of his neighbour, no family member showed up.

Work for money and spend on yourself, the only problem that can rise from here is if you spend irresponsibly.

$500 to $1000 will make a big change for me, that's like getting paid in double of your normally salary, ask any passerby this question and they will tell you how happy they would be if this happens to them.

Someone who already knew how to manage himself or herself with $500 every month just one day start to get paid in double, it will make massive difference trust me.

Someone who wasn't able to safe money aside for investment or savings will be able to do so because they have already mastered the act of managing that $500 already, so the extra will be a changer.
In my small town, a salary of $500 is considered quite good. Workers are willing to put in 12-hour days, five days a week, for that kind of money. If their wages were to double, their standard of living would clearly improve.

The problem is that there have been no wage adjustments for several years; pay remains stagnant while the prices of goods and services rise multiple times a year.

This situation describes what inflation does to income earners.

Based on finances, there is growth but the economy reduces the impact of that financial growth with the increase in the cost of living, and make it seem uneffective. But it's better to keep earning more than remaining at one position while inflation catches up with you.

To a certain extent, there should be provision for investment that could bring potential profits, even if that means discomforting oneself to make that happen, because it would be a cycle of the same lifestyle with inflation on our neck.

Yes, it is! Unless you would better define what you mean by "increase in income." Increase in income could mean a little to a large financial upgrade, so if it is the latter, then it's worth it for more people. Imagine earning $2,500 a month before, and fate helped you secure a nicer place and you are upgraded to $10,000. Can anyone still argues that it's not a financial upgrade? I doubt that!

If there's inflation and your earnings don't match up with it, or is higher than the manifold of the inflation, then you are still not improving.

Does it look realistic that after a salary raise that the next thing you think of is reducing your spending or lifestyle? it doesn't work that way na. with a 50% salary raise, most times, it will come with a need to also make adjustment and with such adjustment comes an extra eating into your salary.

proper financial planning has a way of helping things out so you don't just react to a positive financial change with an urge to increasing your expenses. but in most cases, as your income grows, before then, the issue of inflation would have been there, a need for an upgrade of lifestyle would have been there already waiting for the raise and the most natural thing to do when the raise comes will be to respond to it by meeting those needs and sooner or latter, nothing much will change order than solving those needs.

We may think that everyday that we try to increase our income and earn more money, we don't know that the money doesn't make any difference in our daily expenses. We are just working to maintain the same expenses until we reach our final day as human.

This is why we need to make investment, the person that use $1000 to buy Bitcoin in 2012 isn't the same person again in 2026. The person that is earning $3000 as wages in 2013 and earn $5000 today is in financial crisis because the $3000 back then has high purchasing power.

I think the bigger question should be what really happens to your surplus after covering your normal/essential expenses. If you’re able to double your income but your savings and purchasing power doesn’t or barely improves, then what such increase is doing is only keeping you ahead of rising costs. But if you wanna measure real financial progress, then you should focus on whether your income is growing faster than your expenses and also whether it’s giving you more room to save, invest and also handle emergencies or unexpected expenses without stress.

Same here as well. I think it is becoming a more global problem. I agree that regular pay rises alone do not guarantee financial progress. Unless there are drastic changes, we will simply remain at the same level. As the OP said, the price of everything is rising. Furthermore, various new expenses arise as we progress through life. This actually makes one think that even maintaining the same financial level is an achievement in itself. To achieve financial progress, we need to generate new sources of income or take significant risks to grow our investments, but this isn’t always the right approach. We now have expenses that we wouldn’t have even imagined 20 or 30 years ago. New things will continue to emerge in the future, bringing with them new expenses. So, I believe that whilst simply maintaining one’s financial standing and lifestyle is an achievement in itself these days, improving upon them – and indeed achieving financial freedom – are extraordinary achievements. Life is unexpected and stability and peace are key things we took for granted.

I am going to distance myself a little from the question that was asked in the OP and I would like to share a reflection on the title of the thread, because they are not exactly the same thing.

Regardless of how much money one earns per month, and what one can do with it -savings capacity and purchasing power have already been mentioned, I have the impression that in the future, due to increased global competition and new tools available thanks to robotics and AI, people will be effectively forced to work harder to maintain the same standard of living, unless a basic living income is established that is sufficient to match the purchasing power we currently have.

As I do not see this as feasible if things don't change much, I fear that in the future we will have to make a much greater effort to earn that money, which today can be earned with repetitive and relatively simple tasks, which do not satisfy on an existential level but ensure a present without misery and a decent future.

Well that's the thing first, there is no certainty that immediately your salary increases or your income increases everything in the market will increase. Stuff like that only happens when a currency of a country runs under inflation from time to time. That said the logical way of seeing it is that the more money you make, the more expenses you have. Why Because your standards have increased what you formerly buy in little quantities naturally increases to bulk just so that it can last more longer. Still I believe how you measure your financial progress has to do with how you plan things, and while money is often a major in everyones plan it's easy to say when your income increases, you can consider it a financial progress. Because imagine that your income didn't increase, but the price of commodities do then what  would you do So, you see it's all about knowing what you have achieved and pushing forward. That's all......

How quickly will prices rise compared to earnings? When income increases, what makes it not enough is lifestyle changes.
For example, when a person is still earning $500/month, he only buys simple food in general, occupies a rental house that costs an average, general transportation etc. When his income increases to $1000/month his lifestyle version also goes up like moving to an expensive rental rental house, buying expensive food, buying a car etc. So actually it is not the amount of income that affects the cost of living but the standard of consumption and lifestyle that he changes.

Basically, you're right...But you should know that earning constantly makes you to be financially stable, especially when you earned above your previous financial earning...And it happens that it serves and remain after weekly and monthly expenses...Basically you will be more comfortable than before....

Quote
In reality, Someone can move from earning $500 to $1,000 a month and still feel like nothing really changed.
It happens when the person doesn’t have a budget and it also doesn't have a target...No amount of money you will earn that will be satisfying when you don't have plan...Some people misunderstood everything, Once their earning increases, they also increase their expenses..And it's wrong...

Quote
the reason in most cases is that Rent also increases, food costs more, transportation gets more expensive, and suddenly that extra $500 doesn't feel like much anymore.
This, are now logic..because cost of foods and transportation can't increases because you earn higher than before...Those things you mentioned get increased due to inflation..

Earning more money or extra money can either mean maintaining the same lifestyle or getting better/getting richer. However, there are external and internal determining factors which gives or supports the definition of getting extra money like the example you gave of someone getting $500 but now gets extra $500 to make it $1000 monthly.

The external factors are the policies and economic management of your nation and then the global economy entirely, this will determine the value of this extra income in every financial services. National and global inflation has direct effects on someones paycheck. On situations like this, your extra income will mean little or nothing to say that you are getting better financially or getting richer. You will remain almost in the same financial circle. Howbeit, all that is not actually something personal.

The internal factors that makes earning more money meaningless are personal financial management, immediately some people starts earning more their drive to live expensive lifestyle becomes high when ordinarily these expensive lifestyle they now think they're living is just a cover-up of the previous earning, just like before they're just getting by not really financially better. And when this is coupled the nation or global inflation, that makes it worst.
A good example are many people in government paycheck whose financial life is just similar with every promotions.

Increased income is supposed to help measure financial progress but all this factors majorly the internal or personal factors make it meaningless sometimes.

You know we are different when it comes to lifestyle and the way we earn money, there are people who work hard to keep up their lifestyle and there are people who are earning to increase their wealth, did you know that the more you are earning the more you earning the more you your expenses will increase? No matter how much your income is you can never be satisfied, another reason why a person can not richer is because those who we think they are richer are still looking for another way of earning more than what they are earning, so for me, you can never satisfy no matter what you are earning.

Having an increase in income doesn’t always guarantee that you are financially stable. Why? It’s because of the reality of what’s happening in our economy lately. A salary increase doesn’t always make a significant difference because other expenses continue to increase due to higher inflation rates. That’s why salary or other sources of income should increase accordingly so we can keep up with the expenses we need to sustain.
Also, if you really want to build a good amount of savings and investments, you should live within your means. We don’t have to upgrade our lifestyle every time we receive an increase in salary, earn from a side hustle, or make more money from a business. We shouldn’t feel the need to spend more just because we are earning more.
